UTAH AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SALT LAKE CITY UT
1000 AM MDT FRI JUL 13 2001

SYNOPSIS...A MOIST AND UNSTABLE AIR MASS WILL BE OVER UTAH TODAY AND
CONTINUE INTO SATURDAY.

DISCUSSION...HAVE UPDATED THE ENTIRE ZONE PACKAGE TO ADD CONVECTION
TO THE ZONES THAT DIDNT HAVE IT FOR TODAY...TO BEEF UP THOSE AREA
THAT HAD SOME MENTION. ALSO ADDED THE CHANCE OF HEAVY RAIN TO THE
SOUTHEAST ZONES. GOES PRECIPITABLE WATER DATA SHOWS ABUNDANT
MOISTURE OVER THE FORECAST AREA THIS MORNING WITH AN INCREASING
TREND. THE ETA INSISTS THIS INCREASING TREND WILL CONTINUE THROUGH
SATURDAY WITH THE MOISTURE EVEN SPREADING BACK INTO EASTERN NV.
THIS ISNT TOO HARD TO BELIEVE WITH THE BIG WAVE OVER BAJA MOVING
NORTH BUT IT WILL BE A BATTLE BETWEEN THE TROPICAL PLUME AND THE
INCREASING SOUTHWEST FLOW OVER THE WESTERN GREAT BASIN AS A TROF
CONTINUES TO DEVELOP NEAR THE COAST.

BELIEVE THERE IS EVIDENCE OF MULTIPLE WEAK SHORTWAVES THAT SHOULD
IMPACT OUR AREA TODAY. PROBABLY TWO OF THESE WORKING NORTH THROUGH
THE WESTERN PART OF THE STATE. ONE IS BETWEEN MLF AND U24 WHERE
THERE IS ALREADY RAPID DEVELOPMENT OF LOW LEVEL CLOUDS. THE OTHER
IS LESS OBVIOUS AND ONLY HINTED AT IN VISIBLE IMAGERY. IT LOOKS
LIKE AN EXTENSION FROM THE WAVE THAT IS IN NORTHWEST NV THAT EXTENDS
TO THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF UT AT 1530Z. FOR THE EASTERN AREAS THERE
IS A WAVE IN EAST CENTRAL AZ THAT PRODUCED STRONG CONVECTION SOUTH
OF TUS LAST EVENING. IT IS PROBABLY WHAT IS ALREADY PRODUCING
LIGHTNING SOUTH OF PGA THIS MORNING. IS DOESNT LOOK LIKE ITS GOING
TO HAVE MUCH TROUBLE PRODUCING CONVECTION IN SPITE OF THE EXTENSIVE
CLOUD SHIELD (OVER THE EXTREME SOUTH.

SO MUCH FOR THE DRYING TREND IN THE SHORT TERM.
