High Wind, Eastern Aleutians

Gusty northwest winds were observed across the extreme eastern Aleutians Tuesday afternoon through early Wednesday, along the back side of a moderate 976 mb low 180 miles south southeast of Chignik. Warning level winds, however, were very localized.Peak winds recorded reached 58 mph at one of the Dutch Harbor airport wind gauges between noon and 1 pm Tuesday. These winds are only reported by the observer as augmentation to the AWOS...and then only during the daylight hours the airport is open. Gusty north and northwest winds continued through the night. Although no official wind gusts reached 60+ mph levels, winds around the airport probably reached or exceeded this level after the observer left.
