Cold air crossing the relatively warm waters of Lakes Erie and Ontario resulted in lake effect snows to the east of the lakes. Off Lake Erie, the snowbands did extend too far inland due to the lighter winds however the snow was very intense fueled by the 51 degree lake.

What happened

Cold air crossing the relatively warm waters of Lakes Erie and Ontario resulted in lake effect snows to the east of the lakes. Off Lake Erie, the snowbands did extend too far inland due to the lighter winds however the snow was very intense fueled by the 51 degree lake. The band set up across southern Erie and western Wyoming counties around midday of the 18th then drifted north. Snowfall totals ranged from four to eight inches in North Buffalo and the northern suburbs to ten to fourteen inches from central Buffalo and the eastern suburbs. The Buffalo Airport recorded 14"; at Lancaster 11" was measured and in Alden and Amherst 10". A similar scenario developed off Lake Ontario with snowbands setting up over southern Jefferson and Lewis counties late on the 18th drifting north for much of the night. Fort Drum measured 13" with four to seven inches in Watertown.
