Winter Storm in Maine, October 9 to 10, 2000

Low pressure lifting northward offshore of the New England Coast during the 9th began moving northwestward as it approached the maritime provinces. The low lifted through New Brunswick...endingup north of Maine by the evening of the 10th.Moisture from the storm combined with an unseasonably cold early season airmass to produce a heavy wet snow across northern and northwest Maine. The greatest storm snowfall totals generally occurred across higher terrain areas. Storm snowfall totals across northwest Maine generally ranged from 7 to 12 inches...with the greater totals across the higher mountains of Baxter State Park.Lesser snow totals of 4 to 6 inches were reported across the higher terrain of northeast Maine...with less snow at lower elevations. Snowfall across interior Downeast areas generally ranged from 2 to 6 inches...with the greater totals limited to isolated higher elevation areas. This storm marked thesecond earliest measurable snowfall ever for the Bangor area.Since the storm occurred so early in the season...many trees still had most of their leaves. The combined weight of heavy snow and leaves brought down many trees and branches. Wet snow sticking to powerlines and falling trees and branches contributed to power outages across the region.Around 80 hunters and campers were briefly trapped within Baxter State Park by the snow until roadswere cleared.
