Low pressure moving northeast and intensifying off the New England coast caused strong winds to develop over the state. The strong northwest winds brought arctic air into the area Christmas day. The combination of the strong winds and the cold temperatures on the 25th and 26th caused wind chill temperatures to drop to 35 to 45 degrees below zero in the mountains and 25 to 35 degrees below zero over the remainder of western and mid-coast Maine.
