March 2000 was an unseasonably warm and wet month across Delaware. The statewide monthly average temperature of 47.5 degrees was the 12th warmest March on record since 1895. At the New Castle County Airport, the March monthly average temperature of 47.2 degrees tied for the 8th warmest on record since 1900. Precipitation was above normal throughout the state, especially in New Castle County. The county weighted monthly precipitation totals ranged from 6.5 inches in Sussex County, to 6.7 inches in Kent County to 8.0 inches in New Castle County. All of the Delaware county weighted monthly precipitation averages were at least 150 percent of normal. At the New Castle County Airport, the monthly precipitation total of 9.14 inches was the wettest March on record. The old monthly record of 7.50 inches was set in 1993.
