Damaging Winds in Maryland, November 2, 1999

A cold front swept across north central and northeast Maryland during the early evening hours of the 2nd. Thunderstorms with brief heavy downpours and damaging wind formed ahead and along the front. A severe thunderstorm downed trees and power lines in Frederick County. 1200 county customers lost power, and three intersections in downtown Frederick were without traffic lights during rush hour. The storm dropped 0.75 inches of rain in Frederick. Hancock in Washington County reported 1.42 inches of rain. In Anne Arundel County, 24,000 customers lost power and around 1/2 inch of rain fell. County officials received 42 reports of downed electrical wires and 16 reports of roads blocked by trees. In Montgomery County, an observer in Silver Spring reported a wind gust of 47 MPH. Harford County reported over 11,000 power outages. Trees were felled onto Macton Road in Street, Stockton Road in Joppa, Robin Hood Road and South Freedom Road in Havre de Grace, and Bramble Lane in Churchville. Three cars were hit by a tree that fell onto Paradise Road near Interstate 95, and one person was injured. Winds were so strong a wind advisory was issued for the Millard Tydings Bridge.
