Tornadoes and Hail in Illinois, June 1, 1999

Numerous reports of trees, power poles, and power lines down as a bowecho moved through the south half of Tazewell County. Several outbuildings were either damaged or destroyed. Several irrigation rigs were blown over.

In Peoria, a large tree was blown over onto a house causing minor damage. Also, several power lines were blown down as well.

Thunderstorm winds snapped off 12 power poles at ground level two miles east of Divernon.

A tornado formed in Montgomery County (WFO St. Louis CWA) and crossed into Christian County 4.4 miles southwest of Morrisonville. Just inside the Christian County line the tornado took the roof off of a shed and smashed it into the southwest corner of a house at the second level bedroom. A camper was tipped over on its side and a visible tornado track could be seen in the cornfield surrounding the house. A mile and a half northeast, a 16 foot wide garage door was completely removed and the west wall of the attached garage was removed as well. A carport on a nearby house was destroyed. Further up the road numerous power poles were blown down, a house was blown 3 inches to the west on its foundation, and another home sustained moderate damage from a fallen tree on one end and the attached garage frame was pushed 6 inches inward on the other end. Two inch diameter tree branches were pierced at least a foot into the ground in this area. About a mile further northeast, the tornado caused around $500,000 in damage to a farmstead. A garage was destroyed and wrapped around some farm equipment. More debris and missiles were projected several inches into the ground and a house was shifted a foot north from its foundation. Several outbuildings, grain bins, and two semis were destroyed. The tornado wrapped a grain bin around a combine and a huge grain wagon. The tornado remained on the ground for another mile and a half knocking over numerous trees and power poles before lifting and dissipating 4 miles north of Palmer. No injuries were reported and damage so far has been estimated around $750,000.

As a line of storms moved northeast across Christian County it blew down numerous trees, tree branches, and power lines.

Several large trees were blown down in Latham and Chestnut. In Latham, a shed had its doors blown off and a tree fell onto a house causing minor damage. Numerous power lines were blown down as well.

As a severe thunderstorm moved through Woodford County, it damaged a roof on a shed and caused minor damage to another one in the area 1.5 miles west of Roanoke.

As a line of severe storms moved through, numerous trees and power lines were blown down. In Kenney, siding was torn off of a church. In Clinton, one tree fell onto a home causing minor damage. No injuries were reported.

As a line of severe storms moved through Macon County, four sheds, several garages and a barn were destroyed. Also, numerous trees and power lines were blown down in Niantic, Elwin, and Mt. Zion areas. In Niantic, a live power line fell onto a person causing minor injuries.

As a line of severe storms moved northeast across eastern McLean County, numerous trees and power lines were blown down. Also, two sheds were destroyed near Anchor. Damage to the sheds was estimated around $35,000.

A tornado touched down on the east side of Lake Pana in Shelby County. Four homes and one mobile home were destroyed. A woman in the mobile home was injured and hospitalised for a time. A mile northeast near Route 16, several more homes were damaged or destroyed and two people in one of the destroyed homes were injured. Debris was scattered in the nearby fields. For the next four miles, several homes sustained moderate damage, numerous outbuildings and grain bins were either damaged or destroyed, and one woman sustained minor cuts and bruises. As the tornado moved to the northeast into the Westervelt area, numerous trees were blown down, buildings sustained minor damage, and 9 large grain bins were destroyed. The tornado remained on the ground for another 4.5 miles, knocking down trees and power lines before lifting and dissipating 2 miles southwest of Findlay. Damage was estimated around $2 million.

A tornado briefly touched down near the intersection of IL Route 128 and US 40. It uprooted a few trees and knocked down some power lines. No injuries were reported.

Numerous trees, tree limbs, and power lines were blown down in Monticello and Pierson Station. Some trees fell onto US Route 36 near Pierson Station.

In Sullivan, numerous trees, tree limbs and power lines were blown down. One tree fell onto a house causing minor damage. Five miles northeast of Lovington, several barns, outbuildings, and a garage were destroyed. Two homes sustained minor damage. Damage in this area was estimated around $75,000. Eight miles northeast of Lovington, several trees were blown down across US Route 36.

Thunderstorm winds blew down several trees and power lines in the Shumway area and damaged a couple of sheds.

Numerous trees, tree limbs, and power lines were blown down in Stewardson. One business on the east side of town was destroyed. Another business sustained minor damage. As the storms moved northeast towards Windsor, eight power poles were snapped off along Route 16 east of Windsor.

A thunderstorm gust to 75 mph was reported near the Champaign/Piatt county line west of Mahomet. In Champaign, numerous trees, tree limbs, and power lines were blown down.

A tornado briefly touched down in a field 3.5 miles southwest of Mahomet. No injuries or damage were reported.

Several trees, tree limbs and power lines were blown down in Atwood, Arthur and Garrett.

As a severe storm moved across Cumberland County, a 70 mph wind gust was recorded 3 miles north northeast of Neoga. In Greenup, a small tree was uprooted and several large tree limbs were blown down.

Several trees were blown down in the Iola area.

Several trees, tree limbs, and power lines were blown down. Two miles west of Mattoon, a metal building sustained minor damage.

A line of severe storms moved through Jasper County. Five power poles were blown down on IL Route 33 near Wheeler. In Newton, a new drive-in movie screen was destroyed. A storage building on the fairgrounds was destroyed. Also, 5 miles south of Newton, a machine shed was damaged, a mobile home sustained minor damage, and the township voting precinct trailer was destroyed. No injuries were reported.

A tornado touched down 5 miles west of Rose Hill. It caused moderate damage to a mobile home, uprooted several trees, and knocked down power lines. No injuries were reported.

As storms moved across Edgar County, numerous tree limbs were blown down. One tree was blown down 5 miles south of Paris on Route 1 and another one was blown down on US Route 150 just east of Paris. No injuries were reported.

As storms moved across Vermilion County, a tree split in half and fell onto a house in Westville causing minor damage. Also, a shed was destroyed and a camper was flipped over onto its roof. In Danville, a tree fell onto a car causing minor damage. Numerous tree limbs were blown down. No injuries were reported.

A tornado touched down 4 miles southeast of Westfield. It destroyed 3 machine sheds, a barn, and several trees. The nearby house did not sustain any damage. As it travelled to the northeast, another farm was hit. Two sheds, a brooder house, and half a barn were destroyed. The house sustained major damage with a large hole in the roof and almost every window was shattered. Debris was found up to two miles away. The house was shifted on its foundation which caused the concrete porch to split in half. A 2x4 flew through the house and was embedded into a wall. The tornado then lifted and dissipated 3 miles west of Clarksville. No injuries were reported and damage was estimated around $350,000.

As severe storms moved through Clark County, numerous trees were blown down. One of the trees fell onto a house in rural Martinsville causing moderate damage. In Marshall, eight homes sustained minor damage and several power lines were blown down. Also, 3 miles southeast of Marshall, a machine shed was destroyed and a residence sustained minor damage. No injuries were reported.

Numerous trees, tree limbs, and power lines were blown down throughout the county. One house in Robinson sustained minor damage to its porch due to a fallen tree. No injuries were reported.

A line of severe thunderstorms moved through Richland County. Numerous trees, tree limbs, and power lines were blown down in Noble, Olney, and 4 miles north northeast of Claremont. In Noble, a shed was destroyed and a tree fell onto a house causing minor damage.

Numerous trees were blown down near Sumner, Bridgeport, Lawrenceville, and St. Francisville. In Russellville, several mobile homes sustained minor damage. No injuries were reported.
