High Wind, Aleutian Islands

An extremely intense 956 mb storm developed just south of the Komandorskiye Islands of Russia early Monday. The storm stalled briefly, then turned east and began to weaken. By late Tuesday morning, the system had weakened to a 974 mb center and was located just east of Amchitka in the central Aleutians. Winds along the south and southwest side of the storm were estimated at between 90 and 100 mph across the extreme western Aleutians. Sporadic reports available from the Shemya AWOS recorded gusts of close to 60 mph on the southeast side of the low late Monday afternoon. No reports were available from the site again until late Tuesday morning.
