High Wind, Aleutian Islands

A vigorous low deepened to a 984 mb center and moved northeast to Amchitka Island early Wednesday. By late Wednesday night, the low was located between Umnak Island and Unalaska with little change in intensity. The low began to weaken and reform southeastward Thursday. Gusty northwest winds on the back side of the low reached close to 60 mph across the central Aleutians. Adak recorded adjusted wind gusts of 58 mph late Wednesday afternoon and early Wednesday night. Satellite imagery suggested stronger winds around Nikolski late Wednesday and early Thursday.Brisk southeast winds also preceded the front associated with this low. Early Wednesday the front extended from the low in a southward arc through Seguam Island. By late Wednesday evening, the front had elongated to a position about 60 miles south of the Pribilofs to Cape Sarichef and southeastward. Southeast wind gusts as high as 50 mph were recorded at the Dutch Harbor airport Wednesday afternoon. Brisk southeast winds also spread into the Cold Bay area where adjusted ASOS gusts reached 50 mph mid afternoon Wednesday.
