Tornadoes and Hail in Oklahoma, November 9 to 10, 1998

A tree was blown into the intersection of South Second and Birch Streets, blocking traffic.

An off-duty NWS employee reported a 65 mph gust near 81st Street South and Yale in Tulsa at 1024 PM. An amateur radio operator reported a 70 mph gust near 61st Street South and Memorial Drive in Tulsa at 1030 PM.

Several large tree limbs were blown down.

Numerous trees were blown down across the county road between Lenna and Raiford. Numerous trees were blown down in other places countywide.

Several trees were blown down, and an awning was blown off of a business. A newspaper clipping showed a picture of a large oak tree that barely missed falling onto a home on Crestview Drive east of Claremore.

Numerous tree limbs were blown down in Pryor.

Two barns were destroyed. Turbines and shingles were ripped from a roof, and ten trees were uprooted. A travel trailer was overturned, and a sheet of plywood was ripped from some decking and blown away. Four power poles were snapped near Savanna, knocking out power to Savanna area customers of the Kiamichi Electric Cooperative.

Damage was reported in the High Hill area near McAlester. Specifically, several barns were damaged, roofs were damaged, a piece of tin was driven 4 inches into a tree, and a backyard trampoline was completely blown away and could not be found.

A 42-year old woman was killed around 1218 AM CDT when several large tree branches fell through the windshield of a pickup truck in which she was a passenger, stabbing the woman through the neck. This unfortunate incident occurred at the corner of 23rd and Arline Streets. Several minutes earlier at 1213 AM CDT, emergency managers reported wind gusts to 60 mph in Muskogee.

Trees were blown down.

The Morgan's Corner area, east of the city of Wagoner, suffered damage from thunderstorm winds. A boat storage facility had 150 feet of its metal roof torn off, and other remaining metal panels were loosened by the wind. One pontoon boat was flipped over, and a storage building was destroyed. The roof from one of the boat storage buildings landed on top of Morgan's convenience store, damaging the roof and snapping two electric poles. A sheriff's deputy just south of Wagoner reported a 65 mph gust at 1115 PM.

A large tree was blown down by 60 mph winds. Power poles were also blown down west of Bernice.

Numerous tree limbs were blown down.

Two power poles were blown over in western Latimer County, knocking out power to Kiamichi Electric Cooperative customers in Gowen, Higgins, and the outskirts of Wilburton.

A hangar at the Wilburton Aiport had its sheet metal roof blown away. The winds moved the trailer of the airport groundskeeper off of its foundation. Winds also destroyed two ultra-light airplanes that were tied down, and two single-engine aircraft were also seriously damaged. A concession trailer was blown over. Just east of the airport near 3R and Ranch Road, another mobile home was moved from its foundation.

Trees and power lines were blown over.

Numerous trees were blown down. Other scattered trees were blown down countywide.

A barn was nearly destroyed and two mobile homes were damaged just south of Wilburton. Power poles were blown down in the vicinity of US Hwy 270 and Arkla Road. Downed limbs and trees had to be removed from streets in Wilburton. The Wilburton Pizza Hut caught fire 30 minutes following the storm, though it is unknown if the fire is related to the storm.

Part of a storage shed was blown down, and a tractor had its muffler torn off. Several pine trees and a hickory tree were blown down.

An F0 tornado destroyed a barn, blew shingles off roofs, and downed numerous trees/power poles near Boggy.

A large sign was blown down; large tree limbs were blown down; telephone lines were blown down.

A wood-frame building was destroyed on S. Cherry Street. Tree limbs were also scattered through east Spiro.

The roof was blown off of a home near the power plant. In town, fences were blown over and marquee signs were pushed into the streets. At least 15 power poles were blown down throughout the Kiamichi Electric Cooperative's service area.

Trees and limbs were blown down in Poteau and throughout LeFlore County.

A tornado touched down about halfway between Pocola and Arkoma, moving to the northeast across the Arkansas state line. This tornado continued through the Fort Smith area, producing F1 damage and a 5-mile path length before finally lifting at the Fort Smith Regional Airport. Only one mile of the tornado's path was in Oklahoma. The tornado was 200 yards wide at its widest point in Arkansas.
