Hail and Damaging Winds in Georgia, June 5, 1998

Floyd county 911 reported several trees and power lines were blown down.

Polk county 911 reported several trees were blown down.

The Haralson county EMA director and the public reported severe thunderstorm wind damage across Haralson county. There were 7 homes and 2 businesses damaged. Numerous trees were blown down. One tree fell on a house and another on a vehicle. There were 10 roads blocked by fallen trees.

An NWS survey team verified straight-line wind damage in the Douglasville area. As many as 100 homes were damaged, mostly from numerous falling trees. Shingles were torn from roofs and a few chimneys were damaged. A brick sign at a grocery store was toppled. Most of the damage occurred in a path from the Arbor Station subdivision to Chapel Hill Road just south of I-20. The path was about 200 yards wide and 1/2 mile long. All the trees were laying down in an easterly direction. Winds were estimated at 70 to 80 mph. There were reports of a funnel cloud in the area, but apparently it stayed just above the ground.

Trees and power lines were blown down near the community of New Georgia.

The Carroll county EMA and the public reported thunderstorm winds damaged 12 buildings, 6 of them houses. Damage ranged from minor to moderate. Trees and power lines were also blown down.

An off-duty NWS employee and a public report indicated limbs and several trees were blown down.

Coweta county 911 reported trees down.

The public reported 3 trees and power lines were blown down.

Spalding county 911 reported numerous trees and power lines were blown down county-wide.

The Pike county sheriff's office reported trees down and some damage to houses, mostly to roofs.

Harris county 911 reported 2 houses were destroyed, and many trees and power lines were blown down. A report from the public estimated the winds up to 60 mph.

Troup county 911 reported trees down north of West Point. Power was knocked out in some areas.

Polk county 911 reported numerous trees were knocked down.

Thunderstorm winds knocked many trees down and damaged 3 houses.

Floyd county 911 reported numerous trees were blown down in Rome and across Floyd county. The wind knocked trees across power lines, onto vehicles, and into homes across southern Floyd county. About 15 vehicles and 25 homes were damaged by winds that probably reached 60-70 mph. Upwards of 6,000 homes lost power.

Several public reports indicated dime to as large as golf ball size hail fell in Cordele. The hail covered the yard at one house.

Several reports were received from the puiblic of dime to nickel size hail.

Thunderstorm winds knocked trees down on houses between Thomaston and Crest. Six chicken houses and farm buildings were destroyed or damaged and several house roofs were damaged in the Yatesville area. The city of Yatesville lost power.

Numerous trees and power lines were knocked down in Byron and all along the Peach-Houston county line. Most of the county lost power. Dime to quarter size hail was also reported.

A newspaper reported that thunderstorm winds knocked down old barns, damaged some mobile homes and blew over a tractor-trailer rig on I-75.

Public and spotter reports indicated a large oak tree, pine trees, and some power lines were knocked down.

Many trees were knocked down, some of them large. A citizen using hand-held equipment measured winds of 70 mph.

The Cherokee county EMA reported numerous trees and power lines were blown down.

A spotter reported a few trees were downed next to the Dalton High School. He estimated winds at 60 mph.

More than 500 trees were felled by thunderstorm winds, some onto houses. Crews spent the entire night clearing the debris. Power outages affected about 40,000 homes and businesses.

A newspaper reported thunderstorm winds took part of the roof off of a bank and tore a hangar door from an aircraft shop at Georgia Technical Institute.

A few trees were knocked down by thunderstorm winds in the parking lot of a shopping center near Buford High School. A tree was blown onto a house near Suwanee.

A cooperative observer reported several trees were blown down around the county.

15 to 20 trees were blown down in and around Hawkinsville.

Thunderstorm winds knocked several trees down in the Flat Creek Road area southwest of Gainesville and in the Barrett Road area of east Hall county. Three homes were damaged by falling trees. Trees were also tangled in power lines.

An off-duty NWS meteorologist on a hiking trip spotted damage in the Cohutta Wilderness in northwest Fannin county. This was apparently the result of a downburst from a storm that passed through the area the evening of June 5th. All the trees on the side of a mountain were flattened in a 50 yard wide path. Another smaller path of about 20 yards wide may have had a brief F0 tornado touchdown.
