Hail and Damaging Winds in Georgia, June 15 to 16, 1998

Squall line winds toppled trees onto houses and cars from West Point through La Grange to Hogansville. A police car and equipment valued at $35,000 was destroyed. 10,000 Troup countians lost power.

A HAM operator reported trees down near highway 100.

A HAM operator reported a measured wind gust of 67 mph and the public reported downed trees.

The Carroll county EMA reported 30 structures sustained minor to moderate damage from falling treesas a squall line moved through west Georgia. Five mobile homes were damaged and 1 was destroyed when a tree split it in half as it fell.

Meriwether county 911 and a spotter reported trees down in the Lone Oak community which caused damage to houses and cars.

Pike county sheriff's office reported several trees down and power outages across the county.

Public and spotter reports indicated trees were knocked down in several locations in and around Newnan. Some were blocking driveways and roads. Power and cable TV lines were downed also. One fell on an occupied car. Some shingles were blown off of a roof in Senoia.

A squall line continued from Carroll, Heard, and Troup counties eastward through Coweta into Fayette county. It passed the Weather Service Forecast Office at Falcon Field in Peachtree City between 1230 and 1236 AM EDT. 2 planes were flipped over. The ASOS wind sensor was broken by the wind. It last measured 41 knots, but winds were estimated at 60 knots. A sign from a nearby building was blown into the parking lot. Trees were blown down in Peachtree city and in Fayetteville, damaging a house and an apartment.

The public reported the roof and eaves were damaged on a house in Euharlee. Part of a tree fell on a house in Cartersville.

The Douglas county newspaper reported severe thunderstorm winds knocked tress down countywide.Although lots of damage to homes and vehicles occurred, none of it was heavy according to the sheriff.

Lamar county 911 reported trees blown down county-wide. The roof was blown off a house on Chapel Mill Road in the northeast part of the county.

The squall line continued into Fulton county where a spotter at the communications center in East Point reported trees were downed and blocking at least 15 intersections. At least 10 dwellings were damaged by falling trees. Golf ball size hail was reported. Three-fourths of the city of East Point lost power. In downtown Atlanta, CNN Weather reported windows on the 7th floor were blown out of the CNN building and weather instruments and a satellite dish on the roof were damaged. A spotter estimated winds gusting to 55 knots. Almost 200,000 Georgia Power customers lost power in the Atlanta metro area..

The public reported golf ball size hail.

An off-duty NWS employee reported 2 trees were blown down.

Cherokee county 911 reported trees and power lines down.

The squall line moved through Spalding county downing numerous trees and large limbs in Griffin. A large oak tree fell on 1 home destroying it. Other houses and vehicles were damaged by falling trees and limbs. Power outages resulted to 80 percent of Griffin Electric's 14,000 customers as power poles snapped and lines fell.

The public reported aluminum siding was torn off a house in Hampton and several trees and tree limbs were knocked down in McDonough and Stockbridge.

Spotters measured a wind gust to 55 knots and reported power lines and a tree down. The public reported 5 inch diameter limbs were blown down.
