Flood in Wisconsin, June 17 to 18, 1996

Repeated rounds of heavy rains over a 3-day period resulted in considerable farm field and lowland flooding across Jefferson county. Starting with the 16th, and ending in the morning hours on the 18th, 2 to 6 inches of rain fell on top of saturated ground. The heaviest rains fell over the northwest part of the county. Many small streams and creeks exceeded flood stage, flooding nearby lowlands. Many basements, businesses, and golf courses also reported some kind of flooding. River-bank mudslides and roadside curbing washouts were noted in Ft. Atkinson, while in Waterloo an amusement park's railroad embankment was washed out. Over 60,000 acres of farm land were seriously flooded or eroded; and water remained in some of the flat, mucky soil areas through the end of June. Some farmers in the northwest part of the county said it was the worst flooding they've ever seen.
