March 12, 1966 Earthquake: Taiwan

On March 13, 1966, at 16:31:21 UTC, there was a strong magnitude 7.5 earthquake with source between Taiwan and the Ryukyu Islands (24.2 N, 122.6 E, depth 48 km). Four people died and 11 were injured on Taiwan Island. On Yonaguni Island, the force of tremors was 7 degrees (V - JMA); two people died and minor damage was done. On Ishigaki Island, the earthquake was felt with a force of 6 degrees (IV - JMA). A very weak tsunami was registered on the Ryukyu Islands and the western coast of Kyushu Island.

March 12, 1966, 16:31:21.8 UTC, 24.1 N, 122.6 E, depth 63 km, magnitude 7.5-7.75. The earthquake was centered on Taiwan, but property damage reached as far as Okinawa. Numerous houses were damaged on both islands, 7 persons were killed and 10 were injured.

a particularly strong one on 23 March. Epicentre in the strait of Formosa, felt at Hong-Kong.
