July 31, 1954 Earthquake: Nei Mongol, China

July 31, 1954, 09:00:00 local time, North of Tengger Desert, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, 38.8 N, 104.2 E, magnitude 7.

(Situation in the meizoseismic region not clear.)

Minqin: 490 rooms collapsed in the whole county. 70% of the adobe houses without columns collapsed in villages in the southeastern part of the county. Ground fissures occurred at more than 100 places 2.5 km east of the county, with the largest 5 cm wide and 10 m long accompanied by ejection of black water.

Wuwei: Fissures occurred everywhere in the flood land with ejection of black water and sand. Two sections of the city wall collapsed. Cracks were seen everywhere on house walls. In total there were more than 10 rooms and 30 enclosing walls collapsed.

Gulang: Some houses in the city collapsed. Cracks occurred in some houses walls. Many houses in the mountain region collapsed.

Yongchang: Some of the dwelling houses collapsed.

Shandan: 23 walls and some old houses collapsed around Dahuangshan.

Yongdeng: 19 houses collapsed, and some mud walls split with a width of 1 cm. Some houses were tilted.

Zhangyie: A number of walls of adobe houses cracked. Some temples and old pagodas had fallen bricks, or locally tilted.

Jingtai: Cracks oocurred in adobe walls with a maximum width of 1.6 cm.

Zhongning: Some house walls cracked. Weak pigsties collapsed.

Yinchuan: Some old civilian houses collapsed.

Haiyuan: A weak walls fell down.

Xining: Some buildings had tiny cracks. Some clocks stopped.

Alxa Left Banner: Several adobe rooms in Tulantaibage collapsed.

Felt area included: Lanzhou, Linze, Gaotai, Tiuquan, Yumen and Minle in Gansu Province; Jinji, Ningshuo, Xiji and Guyuan in Ningxia Autonomous Region; Baotou, Hangjin IIouqi, Dengkou and Haibowan in Inner Mongolia Au tOIlcmous

Region; Haiyan and Huangyuan in Qinghai Province; and Linfen in Shanxi Province.
