1948, January 25, 1:47 [local time]. there was a destructive earthquake on Panay Island. It was especially strong at Iloilo and Jaro. Twenty people died. Cracks more than 100 m long appeared in the ground. Large landslides came down from the hillsides, low-lying plantations subsided and the principal water mains burst. The banks where fish were caught were washed out by the sea. Two people drowned in tsunami waves at Iloilo.

Panay: Panay - most severe earthquake ever to strike the Philippines. It rocked the island of Panay with an intensity VII. For 47 days its repeated shocks left 55 churches in ruins. Of the remaining churches in the diocese, 17 totally collapsed, 20 were cracked and shaken beyond repair and practically all churches and rectories were damaged.
Iloili City - was the most damaged area in this Panay quake, as some of its historic structures were destroyed. The five-story belfry of Jaro Cathedral toppled. A 100-yard fissure in the earth sprayed black sand and water high into the air.
Antique - 15 churches destroyed or damaged; in some towns in Antique, about 50% of the houses were damaged. The Coronet tower of Arevalo was also ruined.

1948, January 25. This earthquake occurred at 1:46 AM on January 25, 1948. It is considered as the most destructive earthquake to hit Panay island. Intense ground shaking was experienced in almost all of Panay Island. Among the Spanish-era churches which were damaged were Miagao and Duenas Churches. The towns of Jaro and Iloilo were also very much damaged (SEASEE, 1985). Fissures opened, landslides and widespread subsidence occurred. Banks where fishes were often caught were washed out to the sea.
