On February 23, 1882 at 20:30 [local time] at San Antonio (center of Chile), a faint rumbling was heard and oscillations began which grew into a catastrophic earthquake. The rumbling grew deafening and lasted several minutes. The inhabitants rushed into the streets. The sea calmed down

as soon as the rumbling ceased. (reference #415)
