August 14, 1846 Earthquake: Orciano, Luciana, Italy

On August 14, 1856, 12h35m a very strong earthquake (43.4 N, 10.6E, magnitude 6.1) in the district of Tuscany, Italy occurred. The zone of the strongest effect extended from the shore of the Ligurian Sea, in the area between the estuaries of the rivers Arno and Cecina, up to the foothills of the Apennines approximately to the line of Lorenzana, Orciano (Pisano), Riparbella, Montescudaio, Bibbona. The villages on hills suffered more than the ones in depressions. Orciano was destroyed completely, Lorenzana, S. Regolo, Casciana, Crespina, Lari, Pieve di Sta Luce, Montescudaio, Guardistallo, Volterra were partially destroyed. 56 people were killed. Rosignano and Gabbro located hereabout but on rocky ground did not suffer; for instance, the effects of the earthquake in Gabbro were restricted to entrance doors swinging. The flow of water springs was changed in Vicarello. (reference #2130)
