October 25, 1622 Earthquake: Pingliang, Longde, Ningxia, China

October 25, 1622, N of Guyuan, Ningxia Autonomous Region, 36.5 N, 106.3 E, magnitude 7, intensity IX-X.

A severe earthquake occurred at the following

places:

Pingliang, and Longde (the old city was

located near the present-dayJiangtaibao); Zhenrong

(southwest of Tongxin), Pinglu (old Yuwangcheng)

and Menggu; Magang and Shuangfeng (north of

Guyuan).

About 26 km of the city walls, and 11,800 rooms collapsed. The death toll was about 12,000. About

16,000 domestic animals were killed.

Zhenyuan: The earth quaked, and the mountains

cracked. Official and civilian buildings collapsed,

killing many people.

Lintao: There were buildings destroyed and people

killed or injured.

Chongxin: Most of the buildings collapsed.

Linyou: Buildings were rased and mountains slid.

The earth calmed down 5 days later.

Zhengning and Jingning: The earth shook severely.

The earthquake also happened in Fengxiang and Dali,

Shaanxi Province.

Note:

1. Along an about 100 km long tract of land

enclosed by Great Wall (now collapsed) on the

northern border of Guyuan Prefecture there

were many frontier defence forts and stations.

2. The Lintao recorded date is November 3rd,

Maybe it was another earthquake.
