Today and Tonight: Saturday brings the start of an extended period
of windy and dry conditions for south central and southeastern
Colorado. Southwesterly flow will be in place over the region
throughout the day. This flow will advect drier air over south
central and southeastern Colorado. Along with that, gusty winds to
around 50 mph are expected during the day as diurnal mixing becomes
established. With drier and warmer air in place, dropping humidity
values to around 12-14%, and the gusty winds, widespread critical
fire weather conditions are anticipated during the day. The areas of
greatest concern are west of the I-25 corridor, where less rain
has been observed over the past handful of days. Beyond that,
as alluded to, with drier air, dry conditions are expected
throughout the day for south central and southeastern Colorado.
Otherwise, mostly clear skies and above seasonal temperatures
are expected. For highs, the plains will warm into the mid 90s
to low 100s, the valleys into the 80s, and the mountains into
the 50s and 70s. For lows, persistent downsloping winds will
keep the area well above seasonal lows, with the plains in the
60s, the valleys the upper 40s to 50s, and the mountains in the
30s and 40s.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...

Sunday - Friday: For the remainder of the forecast period, a rather
persistent pattern will be in place, bringing numerous days of fire
weather concerns. The southwesterly flow will remain in place across
the region, bringing more dry and windy conditions to south central
and southeastern Colorado. With the persistent dry and windy
pattern, critical fire weather conditions are expected every day
during this forecast period. The strongest winds are expected Sunday
and Monday however, when the gradient between troughing to the NW
and ridging to the east is tightest. These two days will have the
greatest concern for fire weather in terms of severity and coverage
across south central and southeastern. Beyond all of that, while an
isolated shower or thunderstorm can't be ruled out next week across
the region, dry conditions are anticipated to prevail. If a
thunderstorm were to develop, it may also bring a dry lightning
threat as well. Otherwise, more mostly clear skies and above
seasonal temperatures are expected for the area.

KALS...mostly VFR conditions through the next 24 hours at the
terminal. Strong, southwesterly winds with gusts 40 to 45 kts
this afternoon and evening may lead to areas of BLDU and reduced
VIS. Winds will weaken overnight. Another round of strong winds
is forecast for Sunday, with winds increasing by late morning.

KCOS and KPUB...VFR conditions at both terminals through the
next 24 hours. Strong south to southwest winds will prevail into
this afternoon and evening, with gusts 40 to 45 kts at KCOS, and
35 to 40 kts at KPUB. Winds will dissipate this evening and
through the overnight hours. Winds will increase at KCOS by late
Sunday morning.

.FIRE WEATHER...

High fire danger will spread across southern Colorado beginning
Saturday, and continuing through mid week. A Red Flag Warning is
in effect for tomorrow for the Mountains and San Luis Valley
due to low humidity values and gusty southwest winds. A Fire
Weather Watch is in effect for Sunday for much of the same area.
Dangerous fire weather conditions will also exist on the
Plains, however, recent spotty heavy rainfall may temper briefly
dry fuel conditions. Given the hot temperatures, low humidity
values and gusty winds, we will have to monitor conditions on
the Plains, especially during this prolonged dry, windy period.
All areas on the Plains should be treated with caution with any
outdoor burning activities, as not all areas saw rainfall, and
high fire danger still exists.
