.KEY MESSAGES...

  - Diurnally enhanced storm chances will continue through the end
    of the week.

  - temperatures also begin climbing back into the mid 90s by the
    end of the week.

.SHORT TERM...
(This afternoon through Monday)
Issued at 204 PM EDT Sun Aug 2 2026

Frontal boundary has stalled across East/Southeast GA creating a
great catalyst for shower and thunderstorms development this
afternoon. Main area of storms extending from the Athens to Macon
to Columbus areas and south. Have seen a few severe storms already
and expecting a few more before things begin to diminish after
sunset. With the frontal boundary stalled we will stay in very
moist West to Southwest flow through the short term. This will
keep diurnally driven convection chances elevated. We should see
another round of storms Mon very similar to what were seeing
today. There will be some increased backside moisture across
North GA Tues as the main low will be centered over the GA/SC/TN
triple point borders. This will allow moisture to wrap around the
backside of the low into NW GA bringing slightly elevated precip
chances in. The cloud cover and precip will keep temps mainly in
the 80s to near 90 across the area through the short term.

Daily Storm Chances and a Gradual Warming Trend:

North and Central Georgia will remain in moist southwest flow
through mid-week as a cutoff mid-level low sits over the TN Valley.
From late week into the weekend, model guidance is in pretty good
agreement on the pattern slightly shifting as the low gets kicked
out by a ridge building in from over the Atlantic. Overall, this
pattern will support fairly typical summer weather, with scattered
to numerous afternoon showers and storms each day of the upcoming
week. High temperatures will initially be in the 80s to low 90s mid-
week due to increased cloud cover and proximity of the mid-level
low, but will gradually warm up to the low to mid 90s by the weekend
as the ridge builds in.

Issued at 146 PM EDT Sun Aug 2 2026
Main area of SHRA/TSRA across the CSG/MCN/AHN areas. There are a
few showers around the ATL area but they are moving out. Still
not ruling out storms this afternoon for ATL it s just looking a
bit more less likely. Keeping a PROB30 in the ATL area TAFs for
the next few hours. These storms should diminish across the area
by 02z-04z with another round of storms expected again Mon
afternoon. Winds are mainly out of the SW in the 5-10kt range.
Seeing some wind gust in and around TSRA in the 25-35kt range.
Winds will turn more westerly Monday with speeds similar to today.
Ceilings are mainly VFR outside of convective activity but
expecting MVFR ceilings to move in a few hours before sunrise Mon.
These lowered ceilings will lift back to VFR by 14-15z Mon.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for north and central Georgia.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight...

Showers and thunderstorms are likely south and east of the I85
corridor today. A few storms may become strong to severe,
especially in east central Georgia. Gusty to damaging winds,
frequent lightning, and locally heavy rainfall are the main
hazards. The risk for brief spin up tornados is low, but not zero.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday...

Additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected
through at least mid-week. Locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds
will be possible each afternoon.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Spotter activation will not be needed through tonight.

...A strong thunderstorm will impact portions of northwestern Oconee,
southeastern Barrow, southwestern Clarke, northeastern Walton and
south central Jackson Counties through 530 PM EDT...

At 507 PM EDT, a strong thunderstorm was over Gratis, or 7 miles
northeast of Monroe, moving northeast at 20 mph.

HAZARD...40 to 50 mph wind, frequent cloud to ground lightning and
         heavy rain.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Expect minor damage to tree limbs and blowing around of
         light, unsecured objects. Heavy rain may cause temporary
         street flooding especially in poor drainage areas.

Winder, Monroe, Watkinsville, Statham, Bogart, North High Shoals,
Bethlehem, Good Hope, Athens-Clarke County, Bear Creek Reservoir,

People outdoors should seek shelter immediately. If you can hear
thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Motorists
should slow down and be prepared for possible loss of control due to
hydroplaning.
