...Late Evening Update...

.KEY MESSAGES...

  - Scattered showers and thunderstorms through Sunday are
    expected.

  - A few storms may become strong to severe in northwest Georgia
    tonight with gusty winds, frequent lightning, and locally
    heavy rainfall. A brief spin up tornado also remains possible.

  - Diurnally enhanced storm chances will continue through the end
    of next week as temperatures also begin climbing back into the
    mid 90s.

.UPDATE...
Issued at 905 PM EDT Sat Aug 1 2026

Thunderstorms are ongoing in several of our northwestern counties
tonight. These storms are forming ahead of a slow moving cold
front that will eventually make it to our area on Sunday. The
primary risk with any storms that develop is damaging wind gusts
to 60MPH. However, a small corridor of ~20-25kts effective shear
and ~100 SRH has supported a few broadly rotating storms in
northwest Georgia. This trend will continue to be closely
monitored over the next few hours but its expected that storms
will gradually weaken. Showers and a few thunderstorms may linger
into early Sunday morning as a cold front slowly pushes eastward.
Patchy fog and low clouds are likely to develop Sunday morning
particularly in areas that received rainfall.

.SHORT TERM...
(This afternoon through Sunday)
Issued at 243 PM EDT Sat Aug 1 2026

The initial push of showers and thunderstorms has been limited
this morning with an environment overall unfavorable for vertical
development north of the Macon area. Near Macon and central
Georgia, the environment is more favorable for storm development
which supports the storms currently ongoing. Should see this trend
continue with scattered storms over central Georgia through the
evening with the main threats being gusty winds, frequent
lightning and locally heavy rainfall.

For north Georgia, the next push of thunderstorms will come from
the slow moving cold front currently over NE MS/NW AL. This is
expected to push eastward through the next couple of hours with
storms developing along the line. There has been some clearing
over this NW GA area which may help the environment be conducive
to storm development if the line of storms is able to hold
together into this evening. The main timing will be ~6-7pm and
through the overnight. Main threats will be gusty to locally
damaging wind gusts, locally heavy rainfall, and frequent
lightning. As the line pushes past NW GA should see a weakening
trend as we lose the day time heating factor.

For Sunday, should see the front continue to slowly move into
Georgia before stalling in east central Georgia which is the area
that will become the focus for storm chances through the evening
hours on Sunday. Gusty winds will be the main threat as well as
frequent lightning.

.LONG TERM...
(Monday morning through next Friday)
Issued at 243 PM EDT Sat Aug 1 2026

The extended periods begin Monday with The main frontal boundary
from the short term still stalled across E and SE GA. Continued
Southwesterly flow will also keep gulf moisture streaming across
the area so diurnally driven shower and thunderstorm chances are
expected to continue across the area. With this frontal boundary
staying nearly stationary a few waves move north along it with one
becoming a weak closed low over NE GA Tue afternoon. This low gets
absorbed fairly quickly into the boundary and moves rapidly up the
eastern seaboard Wed. This front stalls along the GA coast through
Wed before being pushed back to the west as the Bermuda ridge begins
to strengthen turning the overall SWLY flow to SERLY by Thu/Fri.
Currently the models show the Bermuda ridge axis forming across the
Carolinas and North GA which would put us in southeasterly flow
around the bottom of the ridge.

Initial "cooler" high temperatures Monday and Tuesday will bring
more widespread 80s to low 90s. Temperatures will be on a gradual
warming trend, with highs in the 90s by the end of the week.

SCT tsra ahead of a cold front may impact the northern terminals
between 02-08z tonight but its unclear how long/if tsra holds
together. Otherwise, it may be just shra during that time. Cigs
lower to IFR at or just after 06z persisting thru 15z before
rising to MVFR and low-VFR. S to SW wind 5-10kts thru the period.

A line of showers and thunderstorms are expected to push into
northwest Georgia this evening with a few storms becoming strong
to severe. The primary risk is damaging winds but a brief spin-up
tornado and locally heavy rainfall are also possible.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday...

Additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected
Sunday through at least mid-week. A few storms could become
strong to severe on Sunday, with gusty to damaging winds.

Heavy rain from multiple rounds of thunderstorms will bring the
potential for isolated flash flooding across much of north and
central Georgia.

Spotter activation will not be needed through tonight.
