...Afternoon Area Forecast Discussion...

.KEY MESSAGES...

 - Isolated damaging winds will be a threat with any storms that
   develop through this evening. Frequent lightning and locally
   heavy rainfall will also be threats.

 - Elevated temperatures, humidity and daily chances for showers
   and thunderstorms continue over the next week for North and
   Central Georgia.

.SHORT TERM...
(This afternoon through Monday)

A very warm and humid airmass remains in place across North and
Central Georgia through the short term with heat and the chance for
thunderstorms as the primary weather concerns.

Looking aloft, troughing to our west extends up the MS Valley Region
and has allowed for increasing SW flow and a steady stream of
moisture return back into our area. Several disturbances within the
SW flow have acted and will continue to act to enhance storm
development and coverage through the short term across the western
two-thirds of the forecast area. Elsewhere, storms will generally be
more diurnally driven. Overall, coverage of scattered showers and
thunderstorms will be greater compared to yesterday namely due to
our synoptic environment. However, the smaller scale features such
as outflow from a fairly impressive cluster of storms in south-
central TN will ultimately dictate where things ramp up through
early evening. Per this mornings FFC sounding, we do have a bit more
DCAPE (just under 1000J/kg) to work with, winds from the sfc upward
are slightly more organized, and PWs sit at 1.77 inches which is
well above the daily mean per SPC climatology. Thus, the primary
threat for storms today will be the potential for isolated damaging
winds. The two areas to watch for the remainder of today include: 1)
North GA, where outflow from a strong cluster of storms in TN pushes
southeastward. This may enhance convection that's already ongoing.
2) A corridor from Columbus to Macon to Sandersville southward where
storms have started to become a bit more organized amidst a highly
unstable environment. An isolated downburst threat will be something
to watch out for with these storms through early evening. Localized
flooding will be a secondary risk for any storms given slower storm
motion.

Convection is likely to linger after the sun goes down but
forecaster confidence remains low on exactly where and for how long.
It will largely depend on how convection evolves through the
remainder of the afternoon. For now maintain lower chances (15-20%)
through 11PM. Patchy fog is likely to develop early Monday morning
particularly in locations that saw any heavy rainfall in the
afternoon.

Aside from thunderstorms, heat will continue to remain a threat
through Monday. A Heat Advisory remains in effect for most of east-
central Georgia through 8 PM this evening. Temperatures have risen
into the mid to upper 90s with heat indices hovering right around
104-106F. At this time, opted to hold off on another Heat Advisory
for Monday given higher coverage of storms and cloud cover (similar
to today). Regardless it will be hot and quite uncomfortable.

.LONG TERM...
(Tuesday morning through next Saturday)

Summer-like heat and diurnally driven thunderstorm chances will
prevail through the rest of this week.

Broad troughing continues over the Mid-Atlantic region through the
long term period. The upper level ridge remains adjacent to our CWA,
but mostly to our south this week. Recent 00Z and 06Z model data
shows a weak, closed upper level low that sets up just south of the
Ohio River Valley and remains anchored there for the first several
days of the extended period. This H250 low should eventually be
pulled back into the jetstream and the upper level pattern should
stay zonal through the rest of the forecast period.

Maximum heat index values will still be near or just above advisory
criteria for us this week. The locations most favored to meet or
exceed 105 degrees are still across southeast Georgia. PoPs towards
the mid-week have trended downward due to the new positions of the
upper level low. Though the better forcing for thunderstorms has
shifted north, isolated thunderstorms are still possible across the
area each day as long as convective temperatures are being met.
Damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and frequent lightning persist as
the main hazards from this pulse-type convection.

Primarily VFR thru the period. SCT tsra is ongoing with slightly
better coverage around CSG to MCN. Chances are likely to persist
at most airfields until at least 00z, though isolated chances
could linger in the vicinity as late as 04z. Confidence in later
timing/chances are low. W to SW winds 5-10kts with vrb gusts with
any tsra. SCT Cu 3-6kts and SCT to BKN clouds above 10kft with any
decaying tsra.

index values forecast to reach as high as 106 degrees this
afternoon.

An isolated damaging wind threat exists with any storms that
develop through this evening.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday...

Hot conditions persist, with heat index values forecast to be in
the upper 90s to low 100s over the next five to seven days.

Daily rain and thunderstorm chances are possible each afternoon
through at least the middle of the week.
