Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
503 AM EST Thu Jan 18 2024
.SYNOPSIS...
Broad high pressure over the Eastern United States will slide
offshore through Thursday. Low pressure will affect the area
late Thursday night through Friday. High pressure builds back in
for the weekend and start of the new week. Low pressure may
affect the area by the middle of next week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
High pressure off the East Coast this morning will weaken and move
further offshore. Abundant mid/high level clouds to the west will
stream east today as a warm advection pattern takes hold. So, unlike
Wed., clouds will prevail much of today. A couple light snow showers
are possible across the higher elevations of the Poconos and north
NJ. We'll maintain the slight chc pops for those areas. It will end
up milder today, compared to Wed. as some W/SW flow at low levels
will develop. Highs should reach the upper 30s/low 40s for Delmarva
and south NJ while low/mid 30s are expected for metro Philadelphia
and other NW of I-95 areas. Winds will be from the West or Southwest
at 5 to 10 mph much of the day.
Tonight, low pressure slowly deepens across TN/KY then travels
towards VA by dawn Friday. A large shield of clouds and precip
arrives just ahead of the low. Precip will begin across the wrn/srn
areas first then move to other areas later Friday. High chance pops
for the period ending 12Z Friday, a small increase from the previous
fcst. Temperatures will be cold enough for snow all (land) areas.
Low temperatures will be milder that Wed night with readings falling
into the upper teens/low 20s for the NW areas and mid/upper 20s most
other areas. Light winds are expected tonight. The winter weather
advisory issued earlier Wed. will go into effect at 4 AM Friday.
&&
.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Friday will be a snowy day for much of our region, as surface
low pressure tracking across the Ohio Valley transfers to a
strengthening low developing off the mid-Atlantic coast.
Generally very little has changed with this forecast package,
with just some refinements to the details. We are still
expecting an 'Advisory-level' snow event for most of our
coverage area, though some areas will see less than that, and
some localized locations could flirt with warning criteria snow.
An initial coastal low will develop off the Carolina coast
Thursday night and track east-northeastward from off Cape
Hatteras Friday morning, initiated by a weak lead shortwave
trough. However, much a much stronger shortwave and vorticity
maximum will head quickly eastward from the Ohio Valley toward
the mid-Atlantic coast on Friday, while partially phasing with
the cold upper-low dropping across the Great Lakes. The overall
positive-tilt of the larger-scale trough will limit
amplification, keeping the resulting coastal low from tracking
northward along the coast. Still, as the phasing takes place
along with some degree of amplification, mid and upper-level
divergence and rather strong vorticity advection will result in
ample lift across the northern mid-Atlantic for much of the
daytime hours on Friday. The left-exit region of a rather strong
jet-streak passing to our south will enhance that lift. Despite
the initial surface low tracking quickly offshore, pressure
falls will occur back toward our region, with a combined low
developing somewhere south of Cape Cod, while an inverted trough
hangs back to the NJ coast through late Friday.
While the transfer takes place Friday morning, some warm air
advection with east to even southeast winds across the Delmarva
and far southeast NJ will allow for some marine air influence.
Otherwise, the overall synoptic evolution will support keeping
cold air locked in across the remainder of our area, especially
from midday hours onward, as surface winds back to more
northeast and northerly even in southeastern portions of our
area.
While there continues to be some model spread in forecast
snowfall amounts and the location of the axis of some higher
amounts, overall there continues to be remarkably minimal
spread. Various ensemble guidance and deterministic models
remain tightly clustered in the 2 to 6-inch range for the most
part, giving us high confidence in the Winter Weather Advisory.
The exception does look to be from near Dover to Atlantic City
southward, with weaker forcing and more marine air influence
from the middle NJ shore southward. Snow-cover inland and
farther north should help support lower-level cold air as well,
and limit rain mixing in as well. Model forecast soundings
continue to support perhaps 6 hours or so of solid forcing
lining up with the dendritic growth region, with colder air
advecting in from the northwest only increasing snow-liquid
ratios and the 'fluff factor'. With all this in mind, have
amounts of 4 to 5 inches in the forecast across much of inland
NJ north of Cumberland and Cape May counties, as well as
southeast PA. Where the inverted trough sets up and snow lingers
into the evening, would not rule out some 6-inch amounts,
particularly toward inland central NJ, though do not have
enough confidence yet to put out any Winter Storm Warnings
anywhere. Snow will come to taper off Friday evening, but did
shift the advisory later, both at the start and end, by 3 hours.
The next shift may need to extend the Advisory to the northern
eastern MD shore as confidence increases in at least a couple
inches there.
Otherwise, with much colder, arctic air flowing in on a
northwesterly breeze Friday night, expect travel to remain tough
with icy conditions on untreated roads, and even some treated
areas as temperatures fall well into the teens. Wind chills
Friday night and much of Saturday will be in the single digits,
with highs on Saturday only in the mid-20s for most our area. As
strong surface high pressure shifts eastward from the Plains to
the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys by Saturday night, surface
pressure rises along the East Coast will support gusty winds
(over 30 mph gusts) right into Saturday evening. With the fresh
snow and some clearing Saturday night, it will be an even colder
night, with wind chills possibly below 0 for much of our region.
&&
.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
High pressure builds into the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley
through Sunday, then eventually slides off the Mid- Atlantic
coast Monday through Tuesday. Conditions will be dry and cold
with well below normal temperatures through Sunday. Lows will be
in the single digits and low teens Saturday night and Sunday
night, and highs will be in the upper 20s to low 30s on Sunday,
warming up slightly to the low to mid 30s on Monday. Wind chills
will be in the single digits to as low as 10 below Saturday
night and Sunday night.
Temperatures then warm back closer to normal levels Tuesday and
Wednesday. Another weak system may bring light precipitation to
the area starting Tuesday night.
