What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this gale watch went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this gale watch went out at Jan 17, 9:44 PM EST, 5 hours 47 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jan 17, 9:44 PM EST, 5 hours 47 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
944 PM EST Wed Jan 17 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
Broad high pressure over the Eastern United States will slide
offshore through Thursday. Low pressure will affect the area
late Thursday night through Friday. High pressure builds back in
for the weekend and start of the new week. Low pressure may
affect the area by the middle of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
945 PM update...No significant changes to the near term this
evening... forecast on track.

316 PM discussion... An arctic airmass firmly entrenched across
the region will remain through tonight, then some warming
occurs during Thursday.

An eastern Canadian upper-level trough that extends down across
the Great Lakes and eastern U.S. this afternoon is forecast to
retreat northward some through tonight into Thursday. As this
occurs, the center of surface high pressure slides by to our
south through this evening before shifting offshore overnight
and Thursday morning.

As the west-northwest lower level flow continues into this
evening, cold air advection is maintained. As the flow becomes
more from the west during the course of tonight, the cold air
advection weakens and low-level warm air advection starts to
develop. This warm air advection then increases during Thursday
as the flow backs more from the southwest. Despite the warming
aloft during the course of tonight, another very cold night is
expected especially given a clear sky for at least the first
half of the night (with some high level clouds overnight). The
low-level cold will likely be enhanced some across the snow
covered areas. A notable breeze this afternoon will diminish
tonight as the vertical mixing shrinks and wanes. As a result,
went a few degrees colder for low temperatures tonight across
much of the area. The diminishing wind tonight will result in
less harsh wind chill values.

As we go through Thursday, surface high pressure shifts more
and more offshore of the lower Mid-Atlantic region. This will
result in the lower level flow being more out of the southwest,
and will maintain low-level warm air advection. After a very
cold start and despite the addition of some increase in clouds,
afternoon temperatures are forecast to climb to freezing or
above for much of the area, especially across the coastal plain.
A string of stronger shortwave energy within the west to
southwest mid level flow will assist in increasing high to mid
level clouds across the region, especially for the central and
northern parts of the area. Some weak ascent with the shortwave
energy and warm air advection could result in some light snow by
mid-afternoon across the far northwestern zones. Given how dry
the low-level air mass is forecast to be, only included slight
chance PoPs (20 percent) for the far northwestern zones. Winds
are forecast to be lighter Thursday, and this combined with some
higher temperatures will lead to less harsh conditions.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A closed low over the upper Great Lakes will have a trough that
extends down into the Midwest. Strong shortwave energy will
dive into the base of the trough and will pass through the Mid-
Atlantic late Thursday night through Friday. Surface low
pressure will develop over the Ohio Valley and that low will
works its way through the region on Friday.

Light snow will develop Thursday night, and then snow continues
throughout the day Friday as low pressure passes through the
region. In terms of precipitation type, temperatures will be
cold enough to supper all snow for the majority of the area. The
exceptions will be right along the New Jersey coast, extreme
southeast New Jersey, and southern Delaware. Generally along and
east of the Garden State Parkway from Ocean county south, and
down into the southern half of Delmarva. For these coastal
areas, an easterly flow will allow for the relatively warmer
ocean waters to keep surface temperatures warm enough for a mix
of rain and snow or even plain rain. This will keep snow
accumulations down.

For the rest of the area, temperatures will remain below
freezing. Unlike the the event on Tuesday, temperatures look to
remain below freezing, generally from -3C to as low as -10C.
Without that surge of warmer air aloft, the dominant
precipitation type will be snow.

Liquid to snow ratios will generally be on the order of 12:1 to
15:1 for most of the area, and as high as 20:1 in the southern
Poconos and as low as 10:1 along the coasts.

Overall, 1/4 to 1/2 liquid QPF expected, with the highest
across New Jersey. This gives way to a widespread 2 to 4 inches
of snow across southeast Pennsylvania, including Philadelphia,
most of New Jersey, and northern Delaware. For Delmarva,
generally 1 to 2 inches of snow will fall. Accumulations right
along the coast should be limited to less than an inch due to
the rain.

Will go ahead and issue Winter Weather Advisories for all but
southern Delmarva, the coastal strip of New Jersey, and extreme
southeast New Jersey.

Behind the departing low, a strong cold front will cross the
region Friday night, and another Arctic airmass will build east.
Low temperatures will drop from the 20s to around 30 Friday
evening to the teens by Saturday morning. This is likely to
result in a freeze of standing water on untreated roads.

A tight pressure gradient will form between departing low
pressure southeast of the Canadian Maritimes and high pressure
building into the Central Plains and Midwest. Combined with
strong cold air advection, northwest winds will increase to 10
to 15 mph with gusts up to 20 mph Friday night, then even
further to to 15 to 25 mph with 30 to 35 mph gusts on Saturday.
Highs on Saturday will generally be in the teens in the southern
Poconos to otherwise in the 20s.

Wind chill values will be in the single digits to as low as 10
below Friday night and Saturday.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
High pressure builds into the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley
Saturday night and Sunday, then eventually slides off the Mid-
Atlantic coast Monday through Tuesday. Conditions will be dry
and cold with well below normal temperatures through Sunday.
Lows will be in the single digits and low teens Saturday night
and Sunday night, and highs will be in the upper 20s to low 30s
on Sunday, warming up slightly to the low to mid 30s on Monday.
Wind chills will be in the single digits to as low as 10 below
Saturday night and Sunday night.

Temperatures then warm back closer to normal levels Tuesday and
Wednesday. Another weak system may bring light precipitation to
the area starting Tuesday night.

&&

Small Craft Advisory conditions through tonight, mainly for the
