.SYNOPSIS...
A low pressure system will track into the eastern Great Lakes
area later Tuesday into Wednesday, however a new low will
develop near the Mid-Atlantic coast and strengthen Wednesday.
The new low will continue to strengthen as it moves away Thursday
and Friday. High pressure should then start to build into our
area later Saturday and Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
As of 115 AM, some breaks in the cloud cover continue with
higher cloud bases, however much more cloudiness is streaming
in from the west. The onshore flow is weak and that is keeping
the marine layer less in charge thus far. Some fog has developed
as a result of less clouds in some areas, however this should
improve as more cloudiness arrives and cloud bases start to
lower again by daybreak. Ongoing strong low-level warm air
advection into the upper Ohio Valley is driving an area of
instability and that is supporting (along with isentropic lift)
an area of rain with some embedded thunderstorms from central
Pennsylvania westward to Ohio. It is this area that will
continue to spread east resulting in the next round of rain
developing in our area during the pre-dawn hours. The lightning
has trended downward so far as the convective elements are
starting to outrun the instability.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Summary...No major changes to the forecast with the Monday afternoon
update. Overall trend though is a bit slower with our complex
midweek storm system that will continue to affect our area as it
slowly lumbers out of the central CONUS across the east coast.
Rounds of rain and overall cool/chilly conditions continue.
The combination of sustained warm air advection aloft fed by a
veering lower level flow and increased isentropic lift up and over a
surface warm front will produce a rain shield Tuesday across the
area. This will occur as a deepening primary low associated with a
large, digging upper trough organizes and will be centered over the
upper Ohio Valley by late day. There will likely be a heavier period
of rain within the 11am - 5 PM time frame with perhaps another lull
beyond this time into the early evening. The synoptic setup that is
forecast continues to show a wedge of cool marine influenced air
across much of our region as a chilly east to northeast breeze
occurs off the coast. The model forecast soundings continue to show
some increasing elevated instability spreading northward some later
Tuesday afternoon and night. The magnitude of the instability looks
sufficient for some lightning production, however most it not all of
the convective elements would remain elevated. The thunderstorm
coverage and intensity will depend on the placement of the warm
front, especially regarding if some could become surface-based. As
of now given the marine influence, the air mass at the surface looks
to remain more stable especially given overrunning rain which tends
to enhance the cool wedge during this time of the year. The severe
thunderstorm threat is non-zero for about the southern half of the
area (especially Delmarva into southern New Jersey), however it
should be stressed that this will depend on the northward
advancement or not of the warm sector. If some stronger storms even
if elevated where to develop, some hail cannot be ruled out
especially if there is sufficient instability above the freezing
layer.
With the somewhat slower timing, the secondary low now looks to not
developing until Wednesday as it forms near Virginia and then tracks
north and eastward near the coast. Still some uncertainty on the
exact track but the overall trend is for it to track a bit farther
north/west than what it looked like a day or two ago. As this low
develops and tracks northward it will bring more rain, heavy at
times, into the area through the day Wednesday with an ongoing
threat for some storms as well, especially near and south of the
urban corridor. It should also be noted with this slower and N/W
trend, the Storm Prediction Center now has a marginal risk for
severe weather extending through Wednesday as well over roughly the
southern half of the area. That said, confidence is still low
regarding whether we'll see any severe weather as it will depend on
the low's track but if there is any severe weather the biggest
threat looks like it will continue to be hail. A track of the low
farther north/west will bring in more warm air and instability vs. a
track farther south/east so trends will need to be monitored. At the
same time, this secondary low will also help to draw cooler air
southward towards our northern and wester zones as the different air
masses are drawn together with the deepening storm. However the
timing on this looks to be delayed compared to prior forecasts so it
should stay all rain through the day Wednesday even in the southern
Poconos. Temperatures will vary quite a bit across the area
Wednesday with parts of Delmarva likely getting near or into the
warm sector with low to mid 60s for highs while areas near and north
of the urban corridor stay mainly in the 40s and even some upper 30s
in the southern Poconos. Winds will also pick up Wednesday out of
the E/NE to E/SE eventually reaching upwards of 15 to 25 gusting up
to 30-35 mph by late day...strongest near the coast.
For Wednesday night, deepening secondary low will continue tracking
northward near the coast reaching Long Island into southern New
England by 12z Thursday. This should keep rain going for at
least a time into Wednesday evening before it starts to wind
down from south to north overnight. It will also be at this time
that enough colder air should work into portions of the
southern Poconos and NW NJ to result in a change to snow before
precip ends. Some sleet/freezing rain could also occur in this
transition. Snow/ice accumulation looks to be limited (less than
an inch) and confined mainly to the higher terrain areas across
the Poconos Plateau based on the latest trends.
Heading into Thursday, the surface low will continue to track across
southern New England while in the upper levels the system's deep
upper low swings through the mid Atlantic. This should bring
additional rounds of showers back through the area on the system's
back side, especially by afternoon, though Thursday's precip won't
be as heavy. Also, there will continue to be the potential for some
snow/wintry mix across the southern Poconos where it will be cooler.
In terms of total rain amounts and associated hydro impacts, we're
looking at a general 1 to 3+ inches expected across the area for the
period running from tonight through Thursday with the heaviest
likely being over NE PA into our northern NJ zones. This is in
addition to the rain from earlier today. The good news is that the
rain earlier today brought its higher amounts more towards our
southern zones and also that it will be a fairly long duration
event. That said, it is still looking like our more sensitive
forecast points across the Rancocas, Raritan, and Passaic river
basins will eventually get into minor flood stage with
additional points getting into action stage. This would occur
Wednesday into Thursday.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
The long term period late this week and this weekend look to be
fairly quiet overall. An omega black pattern will be breaking down
with a stacked low pressure system centered across southern New
England gradually weakening and shifting offshore. Weak high
pressure will gradually settle in from the northwest. A few
lingering showers are possible Thursday night and Friday,
however the bulk of the early to midweek rain will be long gone
by then. Temperatures will be below normal to start, but there
will be a gradual warming trend into the weekend rebounding to
near normal by Sunday. A northwest breeze can be expected,
though no impacts are anticipated.

Rest of tonight...VFR ceilings lower to MVFR then to near IFR
closer to daybreak. Visibilities will lower once the next round
of rain arrives in the pre-dawn hours. Localized fog should
improve as the cloud breaks fill in and lower. Light and
variable to calm winds, becoming northeasterly around 5 knots.
Low confidence.
Tuesday...MVFR ceilings lower to IFR early and will continue
through the day and into the night along with periods of rain.
Northeast to east winds 5-10 knots, increasing to 10-15 knots
with gusts up to 20 knots. Low confidence.
Outlook...
Wednesday...IFR conditions with periods of rain through
the evening, then clearing overnight. East to northeast winds

conditions likely on the backside of the system Thursday.
Thursday night through Saturday...Advisory conditions likely to
persist into Friday with seas near 5 feet and gusts near 20-25
kts. No marine headlines anticipated over the weekend. Fair

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A Coastal Flood Advisory has been issued for Middlesex, Monmouth,
Ocean, and southeastern Burlington counties as tidal flooding is
expected for these locations early Wednesday morning. Tidal flooding
remains possible for the remaining coastal locations of New Jersey
and Delaware and for most locations along the Delaware Bay Tuesday
and Wednesday.
Onshore flow is expected to occur through much of Wednesday,
with this lasting the longest and being the strongest across the
northern New Jersey coastal areas. This will pile the water
toward the coast with surge values increasing some, and this
becomes maximized for the northern New Jersey coast. We are
between the full/new moon cycles and therefore the astronomical
contribution is lower and this looks to limit the widespread
moderate flooding potential. However, along the the back bays of
New Jersey (i.e. Barnegat Bay) could see some localized
moderate flooding especially when combined with freshwater
runoff. Confidence remains relatively low regarding moderate
level flooding. Therefore, due to the combination of all these
factors, there is high confidence in widespread minor flooding
occuring.
As the onshore flow continues into daytime Wednesday, another
round of widespread minor flooding appears to be likely within
the advisory area. However, given that we are still over 36
hours out, confidence is a bit lower and held off on issuing the
advisory for that cycle as a result. Additionally, confidence
is also a bit lower for locations outside of the advisory where
mainly spotty minor flooding is currently expected. Further
examination will be needed to determine if an expansion and/or
extension of the advisory will be necessary.
No tidal flooding is anticipated for the tidal Delaware River
and for the Maryland Eastern Shore.
