.SYNOPSIS...
A fast moving low pressure system will bring a general light wet
snow to Western New York today, meanwhile there will also be
lingering lake enhanced snow east of the lakes into this evening.
Another powerful storm will then impact the region this weekend
with more widespread damaging winds Friday night and Saturday,
followed by significant lake snows Saturday night through at
least early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Regional radar shows widespread precipitation, in the form of snow
across western and north central NY. Actually, radar looks more
impressive than what is actually occurring at the ground due to the
marginal surface temperatures across much of the region. Light snow
will continue through the afternoon with visibility mainly falling
to 1-2 miles in snow, however with some lake enhancement and for
locations at higher elevations visibility could drop to a half mile
to a mile. Accumulation will likely be elevation dependent with less
than an inch across the lower elevations and 1-3 inches across the
higher terrain.

A weak elongated area of low pressure is centered over the eastern
Great Lakes region this afternoon. Warm air advection has been
taking place on the front side of the low with 850mb temperatures
rising to -6C across the region. Winds will slowly back to the west
as the low moves east across the Lake Ontario region late today into
tonight. Large scale forcing will be maximized across the region
this afternoon and diminish as the parent shortwave trough crosses
the region tonight. A cold, westerly flow will intensify lake
enhancement downwind of the Lakes and in time for the evening
commute across the region. Luckily surface temperatures are expected
to remain in the mid 30s into this evening which will limit
accumulations by larger cities, however reductions to visibility are
likely at times. As the low pulls away and the flow becomes better
aligned and oriented along the long fetches of the Lakes, lake
effect snow will become confined to areas south of Buffalo and east
of Lake Ontario through this evening. There will be a period this
evening where synoptic moisture and cold air advection under
westerly flow intensifies lake effect snow across the higher terrain
east of both Lakes. An additional 2 to 4 inches are possible east of
Lake Erie and 3 to 6 inches east of Lake Ontario this evening. A
Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for southern Erie,
Wyoming, Chautauqua, and Cattaraugus counties until 10 PM tonight. A
Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect for Jefferson, Lewis, and
Oswego counties until 4 AM tonight. Low temperatures will fall to
the upper 20s across western NY to the low to mid 20s east of Lake
Ontario tonight.

A surface ridge will move into the region late tonight into Friday
morning. Besides some widely scattered snow showers southeast of
Lake Ontario, the region will be calm and dry into Friday afternoon.
A southeast wind picks up Friday afternoon in response to falling
pressure across the Mid-western States. A mix of rain and snow
showers will move into the western Southern Tier Friday afternoon.
High temperatures will rise to the upper 30s to low 40s, mid 30s
across the Tug Hill.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
...The Next Powerful Storm to Impact the Region This Weekend with
STRONG Winds and SIGNIFICANT Lake Snows...

We will start the period off quiet Friday morning, with mainly dry
weather expected through the daylight hours. Highs will be in the
upper 30s lower elevations (low 40s along the Lake Erie shore) with
low to mid 30s elsewhere. Southeasterly winds will start to ramp up
across western NY Friday afternoon as models continue to advertise
anomalously strong (sub 980mb) area of low pressure passing by to
our west and northwest Friday night and Saturday. This will be a
similar scenario to the storm that just impacted our area on
Tuesday, with strong southeasterly winds on the front side of the
system impacting similar areas that were just battered by the
previous storm. Wind profiles, strength of low pressure system, and
track are all quite similar and therefore bring similar impacts.
Localized downslope areas between the terrain and Lake Erie shore
and the north/northwest facing slopes of the Tug Hill will again see
the highest impacts, but expect it to be very windy in general with
a tight pressure gradient in place owed to the -4/-5SD low.
Precipitation will may start off in the frozen form (especially
across the higher terrain), and transition to rain from southwest to
northeast through the first half of Friday night. Expect at least
minor accumulations on the front end (onset), especially across the
higher terrain and areas east of Lake Ontario, before the transition
to plain rain overnight. If colder air can remain locked in across
the North Country, precipitation may only briefly mix with or change
to rain across Tug Hill/western Dacks, which would bring more
significant front end snowfall amounts. Otherwise, will have a non-
diurnal temperature trend with temps remaining nearly steady or
slowly rising through the 30s before strong occluded front plows
across the area from west to east second half of Friday night
through the first half of Saturday. Coldest airmass of the season
starts to pour in across the region by the start of Saturday morning
with rain already transitioning back to snow across the western
Southern Tier.

Temperatures will fall across WNY through the day Saturday, with
declining temperatures from midday onward across the eastern Lake
Ontario region with all areas down near freezing or below by the end
of the day. Strong CAA in the wake of the FROPA will cause rain to
transition back to snow from west to east and from high terrain to
low by mid/late afternoon with some accumulations possible. One
difference with this system will be the more traditional strong
southwesterly/westerly wind field aloft in the post-frontal polar
airmass due to strong CAA helping to mix strong winds aloft down to
the surface. Widespread synoptic precipitation will pull off to the
northeast Saturday afternoon with lake effect snows starting to
organize downwind of the lakes as very cold air pours across the
relatively warmer lake waters.

Plenty of lingering synoptic moisture and a saturated DGZ in play
should allow lake effect snows to get cranking Saturday night and
Sunday, mainly across areas east of Lakes Erie and Ontario, south of
Buffalo and Watertown. Still too early for specifics such as exact
band placement and accumulations, but localized significant snow
amounts do look likely through the second half of the weekend across
these areas. It will also remain windy, which will also mean the
potential for areas of blowing snow. It will be much colder with
lows in mid teens to low 20s Saturday night and highs Sunday low to
mid 20s, upper teens higher terrain.

Given the strong winds starting on Friday Night and lasting well
into Saturday night. A High Wind Watch is in effect starting 7PM
Friday night across WNY and 10PM for the areas east of Wayne county
and end at 4AM Sunday morning.

Model guidance diverges some for the end of the weekend, however
overall consensus advertises winds backing more southwesterly later
Sunday and Sunday night. This would take any lake effect activity
and send it northeast of the lakes, possibly impacting the Buffalo
and Watertown areas. Will need to monitor trends. Lows Sunday night
mainly in the teens.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The start of the new work week will feature a stretch of much colder
weather with below normal temperatures settling in across the
eastern Great Lakes and northeast CONUS. This will likely lead to a
continuation for the potential for lake effect snow early in the
period. Pattern suggests that the lake effect may try to nudge
northward as the flow becomes southwesterly for a time which would
send the lake effect northeast possibly impacting the Buffalo and
Watertown areas early next week.

Confidence in how the lake effect snow evolves thereafter lowers as
the pattern will become more complicated with the development and
eventual influence of a northward progressing coastal low which
would disrupt the lake effect pattern in place.

.AVIATION /19Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A general light snow will continue across the region today. Due to
marginal temperatures visibility has been 1-3SM, however lake
enhancement will produce further reductions in visibility into this
evening especially south of KBUF and KART. Widespread MVFR/IFR
conditions will likely continue through tonight with IFR improving
tonight across most locations with the exception of the higher
terrain.

Snow will taper off across the region tonight but there will be
lingering lake snows southeast of the Lakes. Lingering moisture will
result in widespread MVFR conditions through Friday morning with
some improvement late Friday morning into Friday afternoon.

Outlook...

Friday night...MVFR/IFR Friday night with snow/rain developing.
Strong winds Friday night.
Saturday...Strong winds. MVFR/IFR with rain changing to snow from
west to east.
Sunday...Windy. Heavy lake effect snow with IFR and lower east
of the lakes, MVFR/VFR outside of lake effect.

IFR and lower. MVFR/VFR outside of lake effect.
Tuesday...Widespread snow will likely result MVFR/IFR.

Low pressure will continue to exit into the Canadian Maritimes with
winds continuing to diminish across the waters as this low moves
further away today. Winds will drop off on Lake Ontario later today,
but a weak clipper low will cause southwesterly winds to increase on
Lake Erie through this evening.

Another very deep storm system will arrive into the eastern
Great Lakes Friday and into this weekend. This storm has the
potential to produce strong gales on the lake, and even a period
of storm force winds cannot be ruled out. Issued a gale watch
for the lakes today. The watch includes southeasterly downslope
winds on Lake Erie so it starts earlier (Friday night). Higher

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Strong gales on Saturday have the potential to produce a lake
seiche which could result in lakeshore flooding along Lake Erie.
LEOFS seems very low (only reaching 6 feet) given the forecast
wind speeds. Instead would expect levels to rise to 8-9 feet
based on the strong southwesterly winds on Saturday. Because of
this, issued a Lakeshore Flood Watch for Erie and Chautauqua
counties. Was not confident enough to include Niagara County
which would require levels greater than 9 feet to cause
lakeshore flooding.

Patchy light freezing drizzle is possible this morning. This could
lead to a light glaze of ice on untreated surfaces. Any freezing
drizzle will change over to snow between 9 AM and 11 AM.

Precautionary/Preparedness Actions...

Freezing drizzle may quickly coat roadways with a thin layer of
ice that may be undetectable. Use extra caution, especially on
