Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 338 PM EDT Mon Jul 10 2023 .SYNOPSIS... Low pressure will lift northward across New England tonight. High pressure located in the middle and lower Mississippi River Valley, and in the Ohio River Valley this afternoon will build to the east. The center of the high is forecast to pass off the Middle Atlantic and Southeast coasts on Wednesday. A frontal boundary is expected to approach slowly from the northwest late in the week. The front may arrive in our region on Saturday night or Sunday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/... High pressure across the Ohio Valley expands to the east tonight and Tuesday as the flow aloft becomes more zonal. This will bring drier air to the area tonight and it will remain for Tuesday. Skies will become mostly clear overnight and it'll remain sunny for Tuesday. Look for lows tonight range from the upper 50s/low 60s for the N/W areas including the Lehigh Valley and north NJ while Delmarva and metro Philadelphia have lows in the mid/upper 60s. For Tuesday, highs will climb above normal with mostly mid/upper 80s expected. Humidity levels will be in the comfortable range however. && .SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/... A mid level low is forecast to meander over lower Hudson Bay and northeastern Manitoba from Tuesday night through Thursday. We will remain on the outer edge of its influence. Surface high pressure is forecast to be located along the central and southern Appalachians on Tuesday night. The air mass will continue to modify as it builds eastward. The center of the high is forecast to pass off the Middle Atlantic and Southeast coasts on Wednesday. Humidity levels should remain relatively low on Wednesday, with dew point readings mainly in the 60s. As the return southerly flow on the back side of the high becomes increasingly established on Thursday, dew point readings should climb back into the lower 70s. Most of southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and eastern Maryland are expected to reach the lower 90s on both Wednesday afternoon and Thursday afternoon. Heat index values are anticipated to be close to the actual air temperatures on Wednesday. However, the increasing humidity will likely result in maximum heat index values in the middle and upper 90s on Thursday. Nighttime temperatures are forecast to be seasonable. They will likely range from the lower 60s to around 70 degrees on Tuesday night, and from the lower 60s to the middle 70s on Wednesday night. The relatively dry core of the air mass is expected to preclude the development of any precipitation for our region from Tuesday night into Wednesday night. The increasing humidity and a mid level short wave trough approaching from the west may bring scattered showers and thunderstorms for Thursday afternoon. A developing southwesterly low level jet around 30 knots may provide enough shear to result in some organized convection at that time. Also, precipitable water values are forecast to rise to around 2 inches, possibly resulting in localized downpours. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/... The slow moving mid level low is expected to slide from northeastern Manitoba on Friday to central Ontario on Monday. Short wave energy traveling in the mid level flow and the increased humidity levels should enhance our potential for scattered mainly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms, each day from Friday through Monday. It appears as though a weak frontal boundary may arrive on either Saturday night or Sunday with a secondary front possible around Monday. Temperatures will likely remain seasonable through the period with highs mostly in the upper 80s and lower 90s, and lows mainly in the upper 60s and lower 70s. && .AVIATION /20Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... A couple gusts to 20 kts are possible across the Northern NJ waters. Fair weather predicted tonight and Tuesday. Outlook... Wednesday through Saturday...No marine headlines are anticipated. Rip currents... There is a LOW risk for the development of dangerous rip currents for the New Jersey and Delaware beaches into this evening. Waves in the surf zone will remain around 2 feet. Westerly winds 5 to 10 mph, except where any weak local sea breeze develops. A medium period southeasterly swell is expected to continue through this time. For Tuesday there is a LOW risk of rip currents as well.
