Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 1039 PM EDT Sun Jul 9 2023 .SYNOPSIS... Low pressure will drift off the New Jersey coast toward Long Island tonight. The system is forecast to lift slowly through New England on Monday and Tuesday. High pressure is expected to follow from the west and southwest for the mid week period. Another frontal boundary may approach from the northwest late in the week and over the weekend. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/... After a very eventful day, particularly in the heavy rain department, the active weather is winding down rather quickly late this evening as low pressure tracks northeastward off the NJ coast toward Long Island. Deep moisture and upslope flow in a rather unstable environment resulted in very heavy, convective rains focusing on eastern PA into northern NJ much of this afternoon, where 3 to 5 inches of rain fell over a broad area, with locally higher amounts. Rain has essentially ended over our area, a little earlier than expected even toward Morris and Monmouth Counties, and we have thus cancelled the Flood Watch. With the surface low continuing to wrap some moisture back in from the northeast, and a secondary upper- trough approaching from the northwest overnight, some isolated to widely scattered showers may linger overnight, particularly over the northern reaches of our forecast area, north of Trenton, but overall the threat of additional heavy rainfall is over. That said, water continues to runoff into streams, creeks and rivers, and low- lying areas, so that areal flood warnings and river flood warnings are in effect overnight. Be extra cautious traveling tonight even though the rain has ended, and do not drive through flooded roadways. Lingering low clouds and perhaps some patchy fog are likely tonight. Tonight's lows should favor the mid to upper 60s, with a variable wind less than 10 MPH. Another mid level trough is anticipated to pass eastward over our region on Monday and Monday night. It may trigger a round of at least isolated showers and thunderstorms for Monday, mainly in the afternoon and evening, mainly north and west of Philadelphia, but would not rule out some activity popping up to the south as well. Dewpoints will begin to head down through the 60s as drier air gradually filters in, and precipitable water values will drop, while the forward motion of any thunderstorms will be fairly quick...so the threat of the threat of any localized heavy rain or additonal flooding is very low. We are expecting a mix of clouds and sun for most areas, with a northwest wind around 10 MPH on Monday with highs generally ranging from the upper 70s to the middle 80s. && .SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... A strong mid level low is forecast to meander over lower Hudson Bay in Canada and vicinity on Tuesday and Wednesday. We will likely remain on the edge of its influence. A continued westerly flow on Tuesday should continue to reduce humidity levels somewhat. The trend is forecast to persist into Wednesday. Both days are expected to be precipitation-free as the surface low moves farther away from us and as high pressure builds across our region. Tuesday's maximum temperatures should be in the middle and upper 80s with dew point readings dropping into the 60s. The air mass will likely modify a bit for Wednesday, with afternoon temperatures rising into the upper 80s and lower 90s at that time. && .LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/... The mid level low is expected to remain over northern Ontario, northeastern Manitoba and adjacent Hudson Bay from Wednesday night through Friday and it may begin to drop southward over the weekend. We should remain on the periphery of its influence through the period. Surface high pressure is forecast to move out to sea late in the week. Humidity should be on the increase again late in the week in the southerly flow on the back side of the high. Some short wave energy traveling in the mid level flow along with increasing instability could begin to trigger some mainly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms each day from Thursday through Sunday. Temperatures will likely remain seasonable through the period. && .AVIATION /03Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Tonight...Showers ending except perhaps a few lingering mainly north of our TAF sites in ABE and TTN. Low CIGs mainly in the low MVFR to IFR range. Variable wind less than 10 kt tending more NW. Medium confidence. Monday...IFR or at least MVFR ceilings may linger for a few hours into the morning, otherwise mainly VFR conditions. Afternoon isolated showers and thunderstorms could briefly lower conditions to MVFR or IFR. Northwest wind 5 to 10 knots. Medium confidence. Outlook... Tuesday...Mainly VFR. Some early morning ceiling and visibility restrictions are possible. Northwest to west wind around 10 knots. Medium to high confidence. Wednesday...Mainly VFR. Some early morning ceiling and visibility restrictions are possible. Southwest to south wind around 10 knots. Medium to high confidence. Thursday...Mainly VFR. Tuesday through Friday...No marine headlines are anticipated. Rip currents... There is a LOW risk for the development of dangerous rip currents for the New Jersey and Delaware beaches through Monday. Waves in the surf zone will remain around 2 feet tonight into Monday. Westerly winds 5 to 10 mph, except where any weak local sea breeze develops. A medium period southeasterly swell is expected to continue through this time. For Tuesday there is a LOW risk of rip currents as well. Conditions will remain very similar to Monday, with a minimal SE swell, and winds tending W to SW around 5 to 10 mph. && .HYDROLOGY... 3 to 5 inches of rainfall fell across much of our region to the northwest of I-95 today, with locally higher amounts, while only around an inch (locally higher) fell to the southeast toward the Delmarva and coastal NJ. Locally 2 to 3 inches fell across portions of northern/central Delaware as well. That has resulted in significant rises on area creeks and streams. While the threat of flash-flooding is ending as rainfall has ended and water drains from area roadways in lower-lying areas, some areal flood warnings will remain in effect overnight. River flooding will be very localized as many area rivers were running very low prior to this event, but some minor flooding is now forecast along portions of the Schuylkill River, Brandywine Creek in southeast PA, and parts of the Raritan and Ramapo Rivers in northern NJ. && .CLIMATE...
