Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 404 AM EDT Mon Jul 10 2023 .SYNOPSIS... Low pressure will drift off the New Jersey coast toward Long Island tonight. The system is forecast to lift slowly through New England on Monday and Tuesday. High pressure is expected to follow from the west and southwest for the mid week period. Another frontal boundary may approach from the northwest late in the week and over the weekend. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... River flooding continues through the overnight as heavy rain put down 3 to 5 inches of rain fell over eastern PA into northern NJ. Most river gages have crested and additional flooding from yesterday's precip is not expected. Even so, as the previous discussion mentioned, be extra cautious traveling tonight even though the rain has ended, and do not drive through flooded roadways. With sufficient low level moisture still sitting in place, low clouds and patchy fog has persisted through much of the night albeit not quite as pessimistic as the GLAMP was initially suggesting. Winds remain generally less than 10 kts and favoring a northwesterly direction. Low pressure is anticipated to move across central NY this afternoon and evening which will bring another round of positive vorticity advection and that may be enough to trigger a round of at least isolated showers and thunderstorms late this afternoon, mainly north and west of Philadelphia. Behind the low pressure system, stronger northwest flow develops and this will drive in drier air late. The drier air and faster storm relative flow should mean that any thunderstorms will be fairly quick, thus minimizing the threat of localized heavy rain or additonal flooding. Highs this afternoon should warm into the mid 80s which is close to near normal. && .SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... A strong mid level low is forecast to meander over lower Hudson Bay in Canada and vicinity on Tuesday and Wednesday. We will likely remain on the edge of its influence. A continued westerly flow on Tuesday should continue to reduce humidity levels somewhat. The trend is forecast to persist into Wednesday. Both days are expected to be precipitation-free as the surface low moves farther away from us and as high pressure builds across our region. Tuesday's maximum temperatures should be in the middle and upper 80s with dew point readings dropping into the 60s. The air mass will likely modify a bit for Wednesday, with afternoon temperatures rising into the upper 80s and lower 90s at that time. && .LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/... The mid level low is expected to remain over northern Ontario, northeastern Manitoba and adjacent Hudson Bay from Wednesday night through Friday and it may begin to drop southward over the weekend. We should remain on the periphery of its influence through the period. Surface high pressure is anticipated to move out to sea late in the week. Warm southerly return flow is forecast towards the end of the week which will bring a return of higher humidity values on the back side of the high. Several waves of positive vorticity advection swing through which should provide enough lift to trigger some diurnally driven afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms each day from Thursday through Sunday. Temperatures will likely remain seasonable through the period. && .AVIATION /07Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Rest of Tonight...Generally low MVFR cigs across the terminals through the rest of this morning with some brief periods of IFR/LIFR fog possible at all terminals. By day break, chances for IFR should be reduced. Variable wind less than 10 kt tending more NW. Medium confidence. Today...MVFR ceilings may linger for a few hours into the morning quickly becoming mainly VFR conditions. Afternoon isolated showers and thunderstorms could briefly lower conditions to MVFR or IFR. Northwest wind 5 to 10 knots. Medium confidence. Outlook... Tuesday...Mainly VFR. Northwest to west wind around 10 knots. Medium to high confidence. Wednesday...Mainly VFR. There is a LOW risk for the development of dangerous rip currents for the New Jersey and Delaware beaches through Monday. Waves in the surf zone will remain around 2 feet as the tide is going out however as the tide is coming in later this morning, we could see some waves in the 3-4 foot range. Westerly winds 5 to 10 mph, except where any weak local sea breeze develops. A medium period southeasterly swell is expected to continue through this time. For Tuesday there is a LOW risk of rip currents as well. Conditions will remain very similar to Monday, with a minimal SE swell, and winds tending W to SW around 5 to 10 mph. && .HYDROLOGY... 3 to 5 inches of rainfall fell across much of our region to the northwest of I-95 today, with locally higher amounts, while only around an inch (locally higher) fell to the southeast toward the Delmarva and coastal NJ. Locally 2 to 3 inches fell across portions of northern/central Delaware as well. That has resulted in significant rises on area creeks and streams. While the threat of flash-flooding is ending as rainfall has ended and water drains from area roadways in lower-lying areas, some areal flood warnings will remain in effect overnight. River flooding will be very localized as many area rivers were running very low prior to this event, but some minor flooding is now forecast along portions of the Schuylkill River, Brandywine Creek in southeast PA, and parts of the Raritan and Ramapo Rivers in northern NJ. && .CLIMATE... Widespread heavy rainfall fell across our forecast area yesterday with a new recording being set at Reading. 5.35" of rain fell breaking the old record of 3.74" from 1952. 5.35" represents the 7th highest one day today at Reading since the the period of record beginning in 1858. && .PHI WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
