.SYNOPSIS...
A nearly stationary front will be over our region today. A wave
of low pressure will lift along this front Sunday and Sunday
night, bring a period of widespread heavy showers and
thunderstorms. High pressure will gradually build into the
region behind that system through much of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A thermodynamic boundary remains stalled north of I-95.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms have developed early this
afternoon, and this activity should persist into the early
evening. Compared to yesterday, the only change is modest dry
air advection (primarily in the mid levels). There will still be
more than sufficient moisture for convective initiation (though
the heavy rain threat may be slightly lower for today). SPC RAP
mesoanalysis indicates SBCAPE is high, pushing 3000 J/kg across
the urban corridor. MLCAPE is more modest in the 1500-2000 J/kg
range though. The mid-level dry air is leading to some high
DCAPE values around 800-1200 J/kg. Given the lack of forcing,
dry mid- level air, and very low shear, I expect CI to struggle
initially through early afternoon. However, we should eventually
see a bit greater coverage of convection, likely centered
around the urban corridor. Some more isolated cells are possible
across the coastal plain and northwest of I-95 too. The main
threat with this activity will be gusty winds and locally heavy
downpours. The severe microburst potential is low, but can't
completely rule out a severe wind gust or two through early
evening.

Highs will be mainly in the mid to upper 80s today, however
dewpoints in the low 70s will produce heat indicies in the mid
to upper 90s. We should remain just shy of Heat Advisory
criteria though.

Overnight, we should see a lull in the showers and storms after
sunset once the diurnally driven instability decreases and the
sea breeze dissipates. There is a chance that showers and storms
with the approaching short wave trough move into the region
before day break on Sunday, but latest guidance shows a slightly
slower progression of this trough overnight.

Fog is possible again tonight, but this will be dependent on
how quickly mid and high clouds from the approaching short wave
trough move in.

&&

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Low pressure with a potent shortwave, becoming negatively
tilted as it moves through, will cross the region Sunday into
Sunday night. Strong southerly fetch will advect plenty of
moisture northward into the region, and strong forcing aloft
will likely be very efficient at precipitating it out. Upslope
flow will aid this, resulting in potential for a widespread
heavy rain and flooding event. Model forecast soundings do
indicate that storm motion may be just fast enough to make
flooding unlikely from a single cell. However, training of
multiple cells over a similar area would be much more likely to
cause issues. Overall, the highest risk for flooding is across
northwestern areas where upslope is enhanced on the terrain
making training storms more likely in this area. Latest
guidance corroborates this with a bit of a shift to the west in
the axis of greatest precipitation amounts. The entire area does
remain though in a SLIGHT risk for excessive rainfall from the
Weather Prediction Center. In addition, enough instability and
shear will be present for some severe weather, especially
further south across the Delmarva and southern NJ. The primary
threat would be straight-line damaging winds. The tornado threat
is low but cannot be completely ruled out. The Storm Prediction
Center has kept a SLIGHT risk for severe weather for portions of
the Eastern Shore of Maryland and southern Delaware with the
rest of the region remaining in a MARGINAL risk. Bottom line is
that Sunday looks like a particularly nasty day for much of the
area. With the westerly shift in guidance and resulting uncertainty,
a flood watch has been held off for now but one will probably
still be needed for at least a portion of the region Sunday into
Sunday night.

System pushes through by early Monday, but upper trough likely
helps support some lingering showers (20-40% chance). The most
likely areas to see showers will be north of Delmarva, where the
upper-level forcing will be higher. Otherwise, notably cooler
on Monday with dew points dropping and clouds possibly breaking
for some afternoon sun. Highs in the low-mid 80s with dew points
eventually falling into the 60s as incoming dry air in the mid-
levels gets mixed down to the surface.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Upper trough over Canada will begin lifting back northward on
Tuesday and Wednesday. High pressure will build overhead at the
surface, providing dry conditions and warming temperatures.
Highs will be in the upper 80s Tuesday and near 90 on
Wednesday. However, dew points will be lower on Tuesday and
Wednesday, generally into the low to mid 60s, which should make
conditions more comfortable than recent days. Lows will be
mostly in the 60s Tuesday night, then the upper 60s to low 70s
on Wednesday night.

Next frontal system then approaches for Thursday and Friday,
with a return of the threat for showers and thunderstorms. Highs
will drop back into the 80s but dew points will rise back to
near or above 70.

.AVIATION /18Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Today...Prevailing VFR. Scattered cumulus around 2-3 kft may
result in brief MVFR ceiling restrictions through 18Z.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible, primarily
through 22Z. The highest risk for this will be for the I-95 TAF
sites (KPHL, KPNE, KILG, and KTTN) when the sea breeze arrives.
Coverage of the showers and storms is expected to be limited
though, so confidence in any one TAF site being directly
affected is relatively low. Winds will start light and variable.
A sea breeze is expected to develop, bringing a shift to
southeasterly winds as it progresses inland. Expecting the sea
breeze to develop and move through KACY and KMIV near 18Z,
through the I-95 TAF sites between 21 and 03Z. KRDG and KABE are
likely to have mostly northwesterly winds through the day.

Tonight...Mostly VFR conditions expected early with increasing
mid and high level clouds through the night. Guidance has
remained very consistent in developing MVFR to IFR conditions in
stratus and fog as the marine layer pushes inland overnight and
near daybreak Sunday. The latest TAF issuance includes a
conservative approach to some of this guidance. Winds are
expected to be light and variable, but generally favor and
easterly or southeasterly direction.

Outlook...

Sunday...Intervals of MVFR/IFR likely as shower and
thunderstorms are expected, especially in the afternoon. IFR
conditions will largely be the result of reduced visibility due
to heavy rain though lower ceilings may also occur. Gusty winds
are possible as well with thunderstorms. Prevailing winds
generally out of the southeast around 5 to 10 kts. Low
confidence.

Monday...Improving to VFR overall, though some MVFR cigs could
linger especially in the morning. Showers possible as well,
particularly from PHL north, but restrictions due to showers
are much less likely on Monday. Northwest winds around 5 to 10
kts, decreasing to less than 5 knots overnight. Low confidence.

Tuesday and Wednesday...VFR under high pressure. Winds around 5
to 10 kts during the day becoming around 5 knots or less at
night. Moderate confidence.

.MARINE...
Winds and seas are expected to remain below Small Craft Advisory
criteria through tonight. Isolated showers and thunderstorms
are possible this afternoon.

Outlook...

Sub-SCA conditions expected Sunday through Wednesday with winds
south-southeasterly around 10 kts Sunday, becoming westerly
around 10 kts on Monday. Winds become south-southwesterly for
Tuesday and Wednesday remaining around 10 kts. Seas generally
around 2 to 3 feet.

Rip currents...

Through Sunday, there is a LOW risk for the development of
dangerous rip currents for the New Jersey and Delaware beaches.
Despite onshore southeasterly winds both days (with speeds
around 10 mph), wave heights are expected to be low enough to
result in a low risk. The medium period (8 to 10 second)
southeasterly swell is expected to continue through this time.

at 10 mph.
