WV imagery shows the next upper trough developing down the coast
of British Columbia, resulting in increasingly southwest flow
aloft over West Texas and Southeast New Mexico. By 00Z Wednesday,
the trough will begin closing off over Washington. The NAM
develops a mountain wave over the Guadalupes today, and high winds
should develop shortly after sunrise as 700mb height gradients
tighten up to 60m/200nm and leeside troughing begins taking place
on the Front Range. As westerlies/mixing increase, advisory winds
look likely in the lee of the mountains, and we've accentuated the
warning with an advisory Eddy County plains/eastern Culberson.
Downslope warming will yield afternoon highs averaging 8-10F above
normal. BLDU is a given, as well as critical fire weather. See
fire weather discussion below for more details.

Tonight, the upper trough is forecast to continue strengthening, and
dig down to OR/CA/NV.  Although winds will decouple somewhat w/loss
of diurnal heating, the mountain wave will continue maintaining high
winds in the Guadalupes.  Mixing and cloud cover will keep overnight
lows a comfortable 7-9F above normal on average.

Wednesday, the upper trough is forecast to dig to the junction of
CA/NV/AZ.  Thicknesses will begin to decrease w/the approach of the
trough, but afternoon highs should be similar to today's, if not a
degree cooler in some places.  700mb height grads tighten up to
60m/150nm, and forecast soundings show mixing to 700mb or better.
By mid-morning, high winds should begin to materialize in the
Davis Mountains, and we've added them to the going high wind
warning. Widespread advisories will likely be needed across the
western half of the CWA. The net result of all this will be more
BLDU and critical fire weather.

.LONG TERM...
(Wednesday night through Monday)

*** Another Major Wind Storm Expected Thursday***

The extended portion of this forecast will begin with yet another
wind storm (what else is new). Early Thursday morning, a deep 500
hpa cutoff low will swing across the 4-Corner region. Southwesterly
mid-level flow is expected to ramp up throughout the day as the
trough approaches our forecast area. There is excellent model
consensus on the positing of this trough as it ejects into the
Southern Plains Thursday afternoon and evening. A robust 850-700
hpa jet will overspread the region between 18Z-00Z Thursday along
with a fast moving Pacific Front assocd with a sfc low over the TX
Panhandle. The arrival of this front will again delineate the
windy/extremely windy conditions. As the cold front races ewd, a
fetch of 35-40 kt sustained winds will follow in its wake. This
time we should see an earlier arrival of the strong winds in the
Permian Basin and the extent of high winds will be spread as far
south as the Presidio Valley and Big Bend region. Due to high
confidence in this wind event (>75%) we went ahead and issued a
High Wind Watch to include all of southeast New Mexico and most of
West Texas Thursday afternoon and evening. Severe gusts up to
65-70 mph will be possible in the plains with wind gusts up to
95-100 mph in the Guadalupe Mountains. Widespread blowing dust is
also expected with travel being greatly impacted area-wide.
Unfortunately with the earlier arrival of the Pacific Front and
dry air intrusion in the mid- levels, the better precipitation
chances will remain north and east of the region. However, due to
strong upper level dynamics and lift assocd with the trough, there
could be a few high-based showers in the mountains and across
norther portions of the region. High temperatures Thursday
afternoon will range widely from west to east from the mid 50s
across southeast New Mexico and far West TX to upper 70s to lower
80s across the eastern Permian Basin and Lower Trans Pecos.

The upper level trough will quickly depart eastward on Friday. After
a cold start to the morning with lows near or below freezing across
portions of the area, temperatures will rebound back to near normal
in the mid 60s. A swift moving shortwave trough over the Central
Plains will drop a weak cold front through the area on Saturday,
cooling temperatures back to near or slightly below normal. Zonal
flow aloft will continue from Sunday into the beginning of next week
with temperatures returning to above normal. Precipitation chances
look bleak through the middle of next week, but long range models
are hinting at the arrival of a stronger cold front sometime late
next week which may bring a glimmer of hope.

hours, and will remain at 15-20kts with gusts to 25-30kts though
the afternoon at most terminals. Gusts subside after sunset, with
winds staying fairly light out of the west tonight.

.FIRE WEATHER...

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for northern and western portions
of the region this afternoon where critical to extreme fire
weather conditions are expected to materialize. The warning has
been expanded slightly to include a larger portion of the Permian
Basin where 20 ft wind will increase to around 20-30 mph this
afternoon. Another night of poor recovery is expected with humidity
only increasing to around 35 percent area-wide. Westerly winds
will continue to ramp up on Wednesday afternoon, especially over
the higher terrain and Trans Pecos where extreme fire weather
conditions are expected. A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for
most of the area Wednesday afternoon and evening when RFTIs of 6
critical to 8 extreme are anticipated. Very strong winds will
impact the region on Thursday with the passage of a Pacific cold
front. This will be a similar setup to the one we experienced on
Sunday. Although relative humidity will recover quickly behind the
Pacific Front, we are very concerned about new ignitions caused
by downed power lines due to strong winds on Thursday afternoon.
A Fire Weather Watch will likely be needed in subsequent shifts.
We will finally see a break in critical fire weather Friday
conditions through this weekend as cooler temperatures and lighter
winds arrive, although it will remain very dry area-wide.
