Warm front is making its way northward into Wisconsin and Michigan
late this evening. Widespread area of precip continues to develop
north of this warm front driven by strong 700-500 mb f-gen and
isentropic ascent...and fueled by deep gulf moisture streaming
northward up and over the warm front. Only surface ob reporting
precip at this time is MBL where precip is light and all liquid
with a surface temp of 36 degrees attm. Latest near term models
still show much of our CWA will be the target of the swath of
heaviest precip as the warm front continues to slowly lift
northward toward our area overnight. While thunder is not likely
overnight...cannot rule out some heavier convective elements
within this developing precip shield. Certainly better chances of
convection will develop Friday afternoon and evening. New snow
amounts of 2 to 4 inches still look likely across Eastern Upper
Michigan overnight into Friday...with an inch or two across most
of Northern Lower Michigan...mainly north of M-72. Snow will
briefly mix with some sleet and/or freezing rain before switching
to all plain rain from SW to NE across Northern Lower Michigan
overnight as WAA takes place with warm FROPA. Precip type across
Eastern Upper Michigan will remain all snow overnight...and then
progressively mix with sleet/freezing rain and eventually rain on
Friday as the warm air arrives in that region.

.NEAR TERM...
Issued at 232 PM EDT Thu Mar 30 2023

High Impact Weather Potential: Mixed precipitation developing
tonight, including the possibility of a light glaze of ice.  Slick
roads possible.  Isolated thunder also possible over parts of
northern lower.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: Surface low over the central Plains with
a warm front extending east/northeast toward the Great Lakes.  The
frontal boundary will become more defined this evening with a
strengthening low level jet. As this happens, moisture will surge
northward through the state, with PWAT's rising from 0.25" to 1.00".
The deepest moisture remains south of our area more firmly within
the warm sector, which is also where things will remain more
convectively unstable as well.  Top down saturation throughout this
evening with precipitation developing from southwest to northeast
later this evening and overnight.  Given the initial lower dewpoint
air, expect dynamic cooling of the atmospheric column to start most
of the precipitation as snow/mix.  Forecast soundings show a
relatively brief window of favorable snow parameters over much of
northern lower with saturation through the DGZ and surface
temperatures at or below freezing.  The precipitation may come in
relatively heavy for a brief window tonight, leading to some quick
slushy snow accumulations (1-2").  A substantial warm nose between
850-700mb will develop later tonight across northern lower,
transitioning snow to freezing rain/sleet and then just rain.  These
transitions will occur relatively quickly, keeping wintry
precipitation amounts generally on the lighter side. Despite this,
slick and/or slushy road conditions are likely in some areas for a
time overnight before surface temperatures climb above freezing.
Isolated thunder will also be possible over southwest parts of
northern lower later tonight with relatively steep mid level lapse
rates within the strengthening theta-e gradient.

Over eastern upper, precipitation will largely stay in a snow/mix
scenario.  Some possibility of enhanced mid level f-gen support
north of the warm front, possibly resulting in several inches of wet
snow. Even in this area, warmer air aloft will likely work into the
area before morning, transitioning the snow to sleet/freezing rain
(at least over parts of eastern upper). Snow amounts of 2-4"
possible across parts of eastern upper late tonight. Given the
marginal snow amounts and the ongoing winter storm watch for
tomorrow night, will not issue a headline for tonight's wintry
weather.  Roads will likely be slick later tonight across this area
and later shifts will have to monitor for the need for a
headline.

Low temperatures will likely be the first half of tonight with web
bulbing with precipitation onset.  Most areas will drop close to or
just below the freezing mark, with temperatures slowly rising later
tonight as the warm front pushes northward.

.SHORT TERM...(Friday through Sunday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Moderate to heavy rain will produce
ponding of water in low lying areas and on roadways, along with
local rivers and streams possibly reaching minor flooding stage.
Also a chance of some freezing rain Thursday night over eastern
upper and inland areas of northern lower Michigan. Heavy snow
possible Friday night into Saturday across eastern upper with
possible blizzard conditions.

An area of low pressure treks through the Straits area late Friday
night. Any lingering snow will begin to mix and changeover to rain
after sunrise Friday morning. There will be the possibility of some
freezing rain remaining into Friday morning with forecast soundings
showing a warm nose above the sub-freezing surface of eastern upper
and northeast lower. Most locations should see around a half inch to
three quarters of an inch of QPF by Friday evening as Gulf moisture
surges northward. Forecast soundings have PWATs nearing 1.00" late
Friday night. There is also a couple hundred Joules of elevated CAPE
progged, especially south of the M-72 corridor, which could produce
some heavier showers (maybe even a rumble of thunder?) Friday
evening through Friday night, hence localized higher amounts will be
possible under any convection that does happen to develop. Storm
total QPF is forecast between 1.00" to nearly 2.50" by Saturday
evening. The highest amounts will be along the Lake Michigan
shoreline of northwest lower Michigan and all of the eastern upper
peninsula. The heaviest snow will be across eastern upper where 6-12
inches of snow will fall late Friday night through Saturday
afternoon...with locally higher amounts possible. With winds
forecast to gust 35-45mph, wouldn't doubt it if blizzard conditions
were realized for at least a few hours, if not longer, during this
timeframe. Evaporative cooling may drag the snow line a bit farther
south, especially if any convective elements develop and have now
increased the SLR over the tip of the mitt to begin accounting for
this. High pressure centered over the Mid-Mississippi River Valley
will build into northern Michigan behind this departing storm
system...bringing much drier air and precipitation-free weather for
Saturday night into the beginning of Sunday. This will be short-
lived as WAA precipitation begins Sunday afternoon/evening ahead of
an approaching clipper system as a mix of rain and snow or all snow
across the eastern upper peninsula.

Winds back further into Friday morning to become southeasterly ahead
of the approaching warm front. Winds behind this system will be
northwesterly with wind gusts up to 45-55mph...especially along the
Great Lakes shorelines. There will be a lull in the intensity of
winds across portions of northern lower as the low traverses
directly overhead late Friday night into Saturday morning before
picking up in intensity once again. Winds once again become
southerly Sunday ahead of the clipper system mentioned above.

Daytime temperatures Friday hits the low 40s across eastern upper
Michigan and northern lower sees the upper 40s to mid 50s with the
warmest temperatures near the Saginaw Bay area. Saturday will be
cooler again with highs only in the low 30s to low 40s (eastern
upper and the tip of the mitt the colder areas), while Sunday sees
mostly 40s across the forecast area with near 50 across the
southernmost part of the forecast area.

High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal at this time.

Weather pattern favors nuisance showers through at least the first
half of the next work week. This precipitation should be mostly in
the form of rain, although with the colder temperatures during the
overnight hours there may be a mix or complete changeover to snow at
times. This is still a bit far out and will be changed/updated when
needed. With the southerly flow it appears that there may be
temperatures in the mid 40s to mid 50s to begin the next work week
as well, with Wednesday possibly near 50 for eastern upper and 60s
across northern lower Michigan.

A warm front and associated deep gulf moisture will continue to surge
northward into Wisconsin and Michigan overnight into Friday.
Widespread precip will continue to develop from SW to NE across
all of Eastern Upper and Northern Lower Michigan over the next 24
hours. Precip type will be the primary concern...ranging from
mostly snow across Eastern Upper Michigan to a wintry mix
initially switching to all rain from south to north across
Northern Lower Michigan. Conditions will quickly deteriorate to
MVFR and eventually IFR as this precip develops and continues to
impact our area thru Friday night. Surface winds will become SE at
around 10 kts overnight...shifting to the east at 10 to 20 kts on
Friday...and then to the NE at 15 to 25 kts with higher gusts
Friday night.
