.SYNOPSIS...
The hot and humid conditions will persist today ahead of a cold
front, then this front will stall to the east and south Tuesday into
Wednesday. Another surface front looks to arrive late Thursday or
Friday, then high pressure builds in to start the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 915 AM, a surface analysis placed a cold front from western
New York to northwestern Pennsylvania then down across Ohio. The
visible satellite imagery shows this front well with a line of
cumulus there. A pre-frontal trough was positioned from southeastern
New York back towards central Pennsylvania then down into Virginia.
The ongoing showers and thunderstorms are along the pre-frontal
trough. The 12z Sterling/Dulles RAOB showed a rather warm air mass
still in place however there is come capping near 500 mb. The
precipitable water value has increased to 1.73 inches. There
continues to be differences in the details among the convection-
allowing models (CAMs) on how today into tonight will go regarding
convection. The main point is that the ongoing line of showers and
thunderstorms weaken with an east to northeast extent, then new
development occurs either to our west or across eastern Pennsylvania
down into northern Virginia. This activity will shift eastward
within an increasingly unstable atmosphere and deeper moisture. The
severe thunderstorm risk remains, with some new convection
potentially discrete initially then congealing into either some
clusters and/or line segments. The main convective organization may
occur just south and east of Philadelphia later this afternoon where
the greatest instability should be in place.

For this update, adjusted the PoPs which included a significant
increase for a time this morning across the far northwestern areas.
Plenty of mostly high level clouds moving through the region, which
will limit the heating some. It is very humid with dew points in the
low 70s across nearly the entire region now. Made some tweaks to the
hourly temperature, dew point, wind and sky cover grids to account
for the latest observations and trends.

Otherwise, the combination of the heat and humidity will point to a
continuation of the the heat headlines today. Highs will range from
the low 90s for metro Philadelphia and SE to the mid/upper 80s for
the N and W most areas.

The CAPE values will be on the order of around 2000 J/kg this
afternoon and there will be moderate amounts of shear. It could end
up being more of an event for SE areas later today. We remain in a
SLIGHT risk for severe thunderstorms later today from the SPC and
damaging straight-line winds are the primary threat. Downpours and
localized flooding possible too given the high moisture content air.

For tonight, the showers and tstms that develop will push S and E
and be mostly over Delmarva and srn/coastal NJ this evening. They
will continue to move offshore during the early overnight period.
Severe weather will be possible, but diminish in chances as the
night wears on. Cooler and drier will arrive for the NW areas where
lows will be in the upper 50s/low 60s. These cooler/drier air will
probably not make it for the S/E areas, so humid conditions with
lows in the low/mid 70s for Delmarva/srn NJ and metro Philly. There
could be some fog in any areas that get rain today, it will remain
patchy however.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Tuesday is finally the day the area will get more significant relief
from the heat. The front looks to stall out over Virginia while
gradually weakening with time. But this will at least put the area
on its cooler side. Also, north of the front it looks like it will
be a fairly cloudy day, especially for the southern half of the CWA,
with the best chances for some sunshine or at least filtered
sunshine through high clouds being over NE PA into NW NJ.
Temperatures will be much cooler compared to recent days with highs
mostly in the low to mid 80s and dew points generally in the low to
mid 60s...so not too high. The exception will be closer to the front
over the southern half of our Delmarva zones where it will still be
quite muggy with dew points near 70. This area could also see some
scattered showers and storms but otherwise expect a mainly dry day.

The forecast gets a bit trickier for Tuesday night as some of the
latest guidance brings a disturbance through that helps lift the
front back north and also bring a swath of showers and thunderstorms
through. Latest NAM is particularly bullish on this scenario. Given
the low forecast confidence POPs are just kept at the chance range
for Tuesday night for most of the area. However iff the NAM solution
comes for fruition will even have to watch for the potential for
some severe weather as there may be a fairly strong wind field of
around 40+ knots in the 925-850mb layer. Limiting factor though will
be that convection should mostly be elevated. Heavy rainfall may
also be a threat as PWATs could increase to around 2 inches. Again,
a lot of uncertainty though regarding this part of the forecast.

Any showers/storms that affect the area Tuesday night look to move
out early Wednesday with the majority of the day looking to feature
dry conditions. It will start to turn a bit warmer and more humid
once again as the flow turns SW with highs mostly in the middle to
upper 80s and dew points creeping back into the upper 60s to low 70s
range. Some additional showers and storms could move in from the
west late day Wednesday into Wednesday night as a weakening
occlusion moves through.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
An upper level trough will gradually move eastward through eastern
Canada and the northeast states Thursday through Friday as a frontal
boundary at the surface slowly moves through as well. This pattern
will keep conditions somewhat unsettled for the end of the week with
both Thursday and Friday featuring chances for scattered showers and
thunderstorms. The best chances will be during the afternoon and
early evening hours each day. Thursday in particular looks to be
fairly hot and humid with highs generally around 90 and dew points
in the upper 60s to low 70s. Both temperatures and dew points start
to come down by a few degrees for Friday with the passage of the
cold front.

Heading into next weekend, the upper level flow becomes more zonal
as the upper level trough departs to the east. At the surface, high
pressure builds in for Saturday as the front settles to our south.
This looks to bring mainly dry and seasonable conditions for
Saturday with moderate levels of humidity under a mix of sun and
clouds. Conditions look to remain fairly seasonable for Sunday but
with some increase in dew points as the front tries to lift back
north. This will also bring a chance for some scattered showers and
storms returning by late day but mainly over the southern half of
the forecast area (SE PA, southern NJ, Delmarva).

.AVIATION /14Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Rest of today...VFR with high clouds lowering some through the
afternoon. Some showers and thunderstorms will move through from
west to east across the area, especially after 18z. Prior to this,
some showers and thunder are possible near ABE and RDG. Brief
restrictions and gusty winds are expected with the showers and
especially stronger storms this afternoon. Southwesterly winds 10-15
knots with gusts to 25 knots. Low confidence on the timing details.

Tonight...Showers and thunderstorms from about the PHL area south
and east will continue to shift eastward during the evening. Brief
restrictions and gusty winds will occur. There could be a period of
MVFR ceilings overnight mainly at MIV and ACY. Southwest winds
diminishing to around 5 knots and becoming west to north-
northwest. Low confidence regarding sustained MVFR ceilings.

Outlook...

Tuesday...Mainly VFR. Slight chance of a few showers or storms
around KILG, KMIV and KACY. Northwest wind 10 knots or less,
becoming southwest. Moderate confidence.

Tuesday night...Chance of showers and thunderstorms with associated
restrictions. Winds variable but generally around 5 knots or less.
Low confidence.

Wednesday...Mainly VFR. A chance of late day showers and
thunderstorms. Southwest wind 5 to 10 knots. Moderate confidence.

Thursday through Friday... Predominantly VFR conditions. A chance of
showers and thunderstorms both days. Southwesterly to westerly winds
Thursday 5-10 kt with gusts to 15 kt. Westerly winds Friday 5-10 kt
with gusts to 15 kt. Moderate confidence.

.MARINE...
SCA flags will continue today. The lower Delaware Bay will be added
to the SCA area with SW winds gusting to around 25 kts at times.
Fair this morning then sct-numerous showers tstms later this
afternoon and early evening. Gusts over 35 kts possible with tstms,
so some Marine warnings are probable later today.

Outlook...

Tuesday through Wednesday...No marine headlines are anticipated.

Thursday through Friday... Sub SCA conditions likely. A chance of
showers and thunderstorms both days. Southwest winds around 10 kt
with gusts to 15 kt. Seas 2-3 feet.

Rip Currents...

Today, south to southwest winds 15-20 mph with gusts up to 25
mph. This will cause an increase in the wave heights breaking in
the surf zone. However, waves will largely be wind driven with
little in the way of a long period swell. Thus, there is a
MODERATE risk for rip currents for the New Jersey and Delaware
beaches.

For Tuesday, winds and waves decrease slightly but a MODERATE risk
for rip currents remains for the New Jersey and Delaware beaches.

At 1208 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm
over Mendham, moving east at 35 mph.

HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 40 mph.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around
         unsecured objects.

Morristown, Dover, Madison, Florham Park, East Hanover, Lincoln Park,
Chatham, Boonton, Wharton, Rockaway, Morris Plains, Mendham, Mountain
