.SYNOPSIS...
The hot conditions will persist into Monday ahead of a
cold front that will bring showers and thunderstorms to the area
Monday afternoon and evening. The front will stall to the south and
maintain daily precipitation chances through mid week. Another
surface front extending from an occluding low across south central
Canada looks to arrive late Thursday or Friday continuing the
precipitation chances with near normal temperatures through the
weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
Very hot conditions continue however several areas have heat indices
much closer to the air temperatures due to much lower dew points
this afternoon. The heat continues one more day, and the Excessive
Heat Warning and Heat Advisory has been extended through Monday for
much of the area.

An upper-level trough across much of eastern Canada will gradually
shift eastward through Monday. The southern portion of this trough
is forecast to amplify across the Great Lakes tonight as a strong
shortwave pivots eastward. This trough will then continue eastward
and into the Northeast during Monday, and this will start to lower
the heights across our region especially in the afternoon. Surface
low pressure tied to this trough will track across eastern Canada,
however a trailing cold front will arrive into our area Monday
afternoon.

For the rest of this evening, a very hot air mass remains in
place however plenty of dry air below 700 mb along with
substantial boundary layer heating and a dry ground has resulted
in the dew points lowering for many spots. This has especially
been the case from about the I-95 corridor on north and
westward. Deeper moisture remains across southeastern New Jersey
to southern Delaware with higher dew points and also
precipitable water values near 2 inches. The lowering of the dew
points for many places has reduced the heat indices, however
many places have air temperatures well into the 90s. A sea
breeze is present as well and so far this seems to be moving
inland a little slower than yesterday, but dew points have
increased into the lower 70s with its passage. Given warmer
temperatures at 925 mb, cumulus development has struggled this
afternoon. An couple of isolated showers developed along the
Delaware beaches earlier with the sea breeze, however those
quickly dissipated as they moved over the Atlantic. We then look
to our northwest.

A lead shortwave sliding across the eastern Great Lakes earlier
this afternoon is helped to sustain some strong to severe
convection across central/western New York and north-central
Pennsylvania. This activity is now translating east-
northeastward and some of it is likely to glance our far
northwestern zones this evening. If storms are strong enough,
locally gusty winds will be possible given a favorable downburst
setup. Otherwise, it will be warm and increasingly humid
tonight as dew points recover everywhere as additional low-level
moisture increases from the south. The highly urbanized areas
such as Center City Philadelphia will likely not drop below 80
degrees tonight. Some trailing shortwave energy may also result
in a few showers or thunderstorms once again glancing our far
northwestern zones during the wee hours of Monday morning.

As we go through Monday, the gradual arrival of the aformentioned
upper-level trough and associated height falls will knock down the
heat some. In addition, more cloud cover is expected. While a few
showers or thunder cannot be ruled out early mainly across the
northwestern areas, we await for the approach of a cold front. Much
of the guidance is holding the convective development off until the
afternoon, with not much organization occurring until the I-95
corridor and places south and east. Guidance does differ on the
coverage of convection Monday. Southwesterly low to mid level flow
will be increasing through the day due to the approaching upper-
level trough, and model forecast soundings show decent veering in
the lower levels. This would support some discrete convection at
least initially, however storms should organize into clusters or
line segments with time given strengthening shear. The upscale
growth and organization will increase the severe weather threat.
There is expected to be ample instability with MLCAPE around 2000
J/kg as dew points will be around 70F. The challenge is the timing
details and coverage as it will probably not take much to get some
initial convection (more isolated to perhaps scattered) going. Some
thunderstorms will be capable of producing locally strong to
damaging wind gusts, especially with any storms that congeal into
clusters or line segments. A lot of the convection-allowing models
(CAMs) show better convective potential from about the I-95 corridor
and points south and east. The PoPs were adjusted some accordingly.
Given an abundance of moisture in the atmosphere, downpours will
occur which could result in brief localized flooding.

The amount of cloud cover and start time of the convection will have
an impact on temperatures. It will be another toasty day for much of
the area, however not as hot as the last several days. The dew
points though are anticipated to be much higher for most of the area
compared to the last few days. As a result, it will feel worse.
Given the cumulative affects of this multi-day excessive heat, we
opted to extend the Excessive Heat Warning through the day Monday
due to heat indices around 100 degrees. The Heat Advisory was also
extended through Monday for all areas, except the Lehigh Valley,
Berks County and far northwestern New Jersey. Any convection will
provide relief from this long stretch of excessive heat.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The showers and thunderstorms associated with a prefrontal trough
are expected to continue into Monday evening along and to the
southeast of the Interstate 95 Corridor in our region. The
thunderstorms will continue to have the potential to produce strong
wind gusts and locally heavy rain. The band of convection will
likely work its way slowly to the southeast during the course of the
night. The actual frontal boundary is forecast to follow. It should
drop through much of our area late on Monday night before reaching
eastern Maryland, Delaware and southern New Jersey early on Tuesday
morning.

There remains some uncertainty regarding how far south the front
will progress on Tuesday. The general consensus has the boundary
stalling across Virginia for Tuesday and Tuesday night before
returning back toward the north on Wednesday. Some drier air is
expected to slide across eastern Pennsylvania, and northern and
central New Jersey at that time.

We will keep the mention of a chance of showers and thunderstorms in
eastern Maryland, Delaware and southern New Jersey for Tuesday into
Tuesday night due to their proximity to the front. Impulses
traveling in the westerly mid level flow may help to touch off some
scattered convection at that time.

The chance of showers and thunderstorms is anticipated to spread to
the north on Wednesday along with the front. However, a bit of a cap
may develop and that could limit the coverage.

Temperatures from Monday night through Wednesday will be typical for
late July.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A closed upper low across south-central Canada will
return the western ridging and eastern troughing setup during the
long term period. Thus, we will have at least a chance of
precipitation in the forecast each day throughout the long term
period. No appreciable height falls associated with the trough or
decreases in thickness values are indicated across long term
guidance, so no major temperature swings or prolonged excessive heat
are expected.

The best chance for precipitation will be Thursday into Friday as a
surface front associated with an occluding low in Canada pushes
through. There is uncertainty across guidance on the amount of
moisture that will be available and how much precipitation is
possible. Ensembles indicate the potential for slightly above normal
PWAT values, though nothing too extreme at this time. Upper level
support could maintain the chance for scattered showers through the
weekend until the occluded low gets absorbed back into the flow.
More details will be ironed out later this week. Highs Thursday and
Friday will be around or slightly above normal.

Otherwise, northwest flow looks to take hold at the end of the
period and return temperatures back toward climatological normals.
Ensembles have generally good agreement on mid-level cooler air
filtering in with 850 mb temperatures dropping to slightly below
normal values. The weekend looks to stay dry at this point with
surface high pressure building behind the front.

.AVIATION /22Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Rest of this afternoon...VFR with high clouds and also some cumulus.
Southwesterly winds 8-12 knots with some local gusts up to 20 knots
at times. A sea/bay breeze at ACY/ILG will result in a south or
southeast wind. Moderate confidence.

Tonight...A few showers or thunderstorms early mainly north and west
of ABE/RDG, otherwise VFR. Southwest winds diminishing to less than
10 knots. Moderate confidence.

Monday...VFR overall, however a brief period of sub-VFR conditions
in the afternoon (mainly after 18z) as showers and thunderstorms
develop from west to east. Locally strong winds may accompany some
storms. Southwesterly winds 10-15 knots with some local gusts to
around 20 knots. Low confidence regarding the timing details.

Monday night...Showers and thunderstorms reducing conditions to
MVFR/IFR in the evening. The thunderstorms may bring strong wind
gusts and heavy rain. Conditions improving to VFR from northwest to
southeast. However, some lingering low clouds and visibility
restrictions are possible, especially in areas that receive heavy
rainfall. Southwest wind 10 knots or less, becoming northwest.
Medium confidence.

Outlook...

Tuesday...Mainly VFR. A chance of showers and thunderstorms around
KILG, KMIV and KACY. Northwest wind 10 knots or less, becoming
southwest. Medium confidence.

Tuesday night...Mainly VFR with some local MVFR restrictions
possible after 06Z. Variable wind 6 knots or less. Medium confidence.

Wednesday...Mainly VFR. A chance of afternoon showers and
thunderstorms. Southwest wind 5 to 10 knots. Medium confidence.

Thursday through Friday... Predominantly VFR conditions. A chance of
showers and thunderstorms both days. Southwesterly winds Thursday 5-
10 kt with gusts to 15 kt. Westerly winds Friday 5-10 kt with gusts
to 15 kt.

.MARINE...
Small Craft Advisory continues through Monday for the Atlantic
coastal waters. Southerly winds will increase through tonight with
gusts to about 25 knots. This will allow the seas to build into the
4 to 6 foot range. It should remain below Small Craft Advisory
criteria on Delaware Bay. Showers and thunderstorms arrive late
Monday afternoon with potentially locally strong winds.

Monday night...A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect for our
ocean waters for wave heights around 5 feet. Southwest wind 15 to 20
knots, becoming west to northwest around 10 knots.

Outlook...

Tuesday through Wednesday...No marine headlines are anticipated.

Thursday through Friday... Sub SCA conditions likely. A chance of
showers and thunderstorms both days. Southwest winds 5-10 kt with
gusts to 15 kt. Seas 2-3 feet.

Rip Currents...

Through tonight, southerly winds 15-20 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.
This will also increase the wave heights breaking in the surf zone.
This will result in a MODERATE risk for the development of dangerous
rip currents for the New Jersey beaches with the exception of
Monmouth County where the risk remains LOW. For the Delaware
beaches, the rip current risk remains LOW.

For Monday, elevated waves and winds will result in a MODERATE to
HIGH risk for rip currents for the New Jersey beaches. For the
Delaware beaches the risk for rip currents will be MODERATE.
