.SYNOPSIS...
A complex frontal system will impact the region this weekend,
with a strong cold front moving through Sunday night. Cold high
pressure will build over the area early next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/...
As of 1030 PM Sat...Some clearing across the area late this
evening as breezy SW flow keeps unseasonably warm and muggy
conditions in place. Lack of forcing keeps dry conditions in
place overnight, with no significant chances made to the
forecast with the latest update.

Previous Discussion...Warm temperatures continue to start the
new year as the 80 degree mark was breached this afternoon at
New Bern and New River, both at least tying record values at
this point. Winds have begun to increase in advance of a frontal
system that continues to approach the region from the west and
will be the main weather maker on Sunday. Breezy SW winds
persist through the night, with gusty winds at times along the
OBX. Low temperatures overnight in the mid 60s.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...
As of 400 PM Sat...By Sunday morning attention will shift to the
northwest where precipitation chances will increase with an
approaching frontal system that will slowly drop through the
area and eventually stall out. Timing of the front is slightly
slower with much of the main precipitation holding off until
Sunday afternoon especially for southern and eastern portions of
the forecast area. While the system will have plenty of shear to
work with, instability may be harder to come by but still
maintain a slight chance for thunder Sunday afternoon. QPF
values for this part of the system should remain between a
quarter and a half of an inch on Sunday with the bulk of the
heavy precipitation holding off until Sunday night and Monday.
High temperatures will once again be warm with highs in the mid
70s with lower 70s along the coast and OBX.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 320 AM Sat...Temperatures will continue to be well above
normal through the weekend. A strong cold will approach the area
Sunday and move through Sunday night with significantly colder
temperatures expected early next week.

Sunday Night through Monday...Cold front stalls overhead as
the upper level trough will begin to lift and become more
neutrally to negatively tilted Sunday night, providing strong
baroclinic forcing. As a result, a prominent low pressure system
will begin to rapidly form along the stalled boundary, riding
the Southeast coastline overnight Sunday into Monday morning.
Increased dynamic lift in combination with an already moist
prefrontal airmass will surge PWAT values towards climatological
maximums, around 1.5" or more. QPF continues to trend higher,
with widespread 1.5-2.5" now expected with locally heavier
amounts. Heaviest rainfall will occur near and along the
developing warm front associated with this strengthening low,
though global models are showing differences in the progression
of this low. Euro/NAM/CMC models favoring a coastal low that
stays just offshore, keeping eastern NC in the north side of the
low and covered in an area of moderate stratiform precip. GFS,
however, shows a solution that tracks the low slightly inland,
bringing the warm front north of the Crystal Coast and pinning
heaviest rainfall further inland.

While heavy rain is expected regardless of exact low track, the
GFS solution will raise concerns for a second period of severe
weather potential early Monday morning with the Crystal Coast in
the warm sector. Hi res soundings from FV3 CAM along the
southern coast during this time suggest strong shear, favorable
veering hodographs, and sufficient instability to warrant
concerns for a short window of severe storms. As a result, low
track bears watching as the next round of model runs come in.

Low pressure will begin to depart after daybreak Monday, with
most of the region now likely on the cold side of this low.
Stratiform precip shield expected to begin tapering off late
morning and into the early afternoon as winds surge from the
north and CAA ramps up. Overall cold day expected for Monday
with highs in the mid 40s. A very isolated chance for mix precip
cannot be ruled out for the extreme northern tier counties, but
any notable impacts remain unlikely at this time.

Monday night through Friday...High pressure builds into the
area Monday night into Tuesday with a significantly colder
airmass building into the area with temps finally falling below
normal. Lows Monday night will drop into the mid 20s for most
with mid to upper 30s along the coast. Tuesday warms a few
degrees as the high becomes centered over the area and CAA wanes
but will still be a few degrees below normal with highs in the
upper 40s to low 50s. The high moves off the Mid-Atlantic coast
as a coastal trough pushes toward the coast, which could bring
a few showers across eastern portions of the FA. Temps continue
to moderate with highs around the upper 50s to mid 60s. Another
trough drips across the Midwest on Thu, advancing a cold front
closer to the East Coast that will arrive Thu night into Friday
for another chance for a few showers.

.AVIATION /04Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
SHORT TERM /through Sunday/... \
As of 7 PM Sat...Breezy SW flow ahead of an approaching cold
front will prevail VFR conditions overnight. Better low level
moisture convergence arrives after dawn Sunday, with MVFR
ceilings expected to prevail through much of the day as
scattered showers develop in the morning, with coverage
increasing during the day. IFR conditions could begin to emerge
later in the day as a wave of low pressure develops along the
front and widespread showers, with a couple of thunderstorms
possible, emerge.

LONG TERM /Sunday Night through Thursday/...
As of 4 PM Sat...The potential for heavy rain and stronger
storms will continue Sunday night and into Monday morning, with
higher confidence IFR to LIFR ceilings as the low passes
nearby/overhead. High pressure builds into the area Monday
afternoon with gusty NW winds. High pressure settles overhead
Tuesday for a quiet day before moving offshore Wednesday.

.MARINE...
SHORT TERM /through tonight/...
As of 10 PM Sat...The gradient continues to tighten ahead of an
approaching cold front, eroding the last of the sea fog and
bringing Gale Force winds to the coastal waters. Diamond Shoals
buoy has reported frequent gale force gusts over the past 1-2
hours, conditions which are likely being observed across the
waters beyond 10-15 nm offshore from Cape Hatteras to Cape
Lookout, with gradually increasing wind speeds expected to
continue through Sunday afternoon. WAA/cooler water combo will
limit winds somewhat inshore, but gusts to 25-30 kt still
expected with SCAs in effect for all inshore waters as well as
the coastal waters north of Oregon Inlet. Seas around 3-7 ft
late this evening are beginning to trend higher, with seas
reaching 7-10 ft off the southern OBX Sunday.

LONG TERM /Sunday Night through Thursday/...
As of 4 PM Sat...Front will cross the waters Sun night,
bringing in a brief lull before strong Nrly winds surge behind
the front Monday morning, bringing solid Gales to all coastal
waters and main tidewaters. Some storm- force gusts may be
possible for coastal waters adjacent to the Gulf Stream.
Treacherous seas are expected Monday, building to 10-12 ft
across the central and northern waters with 7-9 ft across the
southern waters. High pressure moves overhead Tuesday, allowing
howling winds to rapidly calm to 10 kts and dangerous seas to
drop to 3-5 ft with marine conditions continuing to improve into
Wednesday.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 7 AM Sat...Minor water level rises possible for soundside
Outer Banks north of Cape Hatteras Sunday with strong SW winds.
Strong north to northwest winds will develop behind a cold
front Sunday night and Monday, which could lead to a better
chance for minor to locally moderate coastal flooding (1-3 ft
agl) along soundside Outer Banks and downeast Carteret county.
Rough surf expected, with minor ocean overwash possible, from
Duck to Cape Hatteras.
