.SYNOPSIS...
A strong cold front and low pressure area will impact the
region tonight and Monday. Cold high pressure will build over
the area early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 1020 AM Sun...

Latest radar analysis shows precipitation associated with
advancing weak frontal system approaching the HWY 17 corridor at
this time. So far, precipitation has been very light as
advancing system has run into a lot of dry air throughout the
column as evidenced by this mornings comparatively dry sounding
this morning relative to the WAL and GSO soundings. A few
heavier bands where some more instability has made it through
led to 0.30 inches observed at PGV but this appears to be above
average rainfall production for the system so far. Also seeing
in visible satellite data some breaks in the clouds behind this
line, which could lead to higher than expected temperatures
across the CWA. We'll have to see if that trend continues or
advancement of greater moisture from the southwest reinforces
the stratus deck this afternoon. Could end up with a fairly
large gradient in high temperatures between coastal sites and
those further inland. No thunder has been observed to this point
in the advancing precipitation but pockets of instability could
change that over the next couple of hours so left isolated
thunder in the forecast for now. Winds remain out of the
southwest and gusty but some evidence that the higher gusts have
trailed off behind the advancing front. Coastal areas will
continue to gust 20-30 kts at least for the next few hours.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM MONDAY/...
As of 7 AM Sun...Strong cold front pushes into the area and
stalls tonight as the negatively tilted upper level trough lifts
into the Carolinas, providing strong baroclinic forcing. This
will result in low pressure strengthening along the front and
over the Carolinas, and pushing offshore Monday. Still some
uncertainty in the exact track of the low, though guidance seems
to be trending towards a slight northward jog. This is
concerning because it would potentially keep more of the
southern forecast area in the warm sector, enhancing the svr wx
threat. Based on current track consensus, instability and SRH
values peak along the southern coastal sections (mainly south of
Hwy 70) after 08z. There is a threat of damaging wind gusts and
tornadoes, with strong shear in place and favorable veering
hodographs. Increased dynamic lift in combination with an
already moist prefrontal airmass will surge PWAT values towards
climatological maximums, around 1.5". Locally heavy rain is
another concern overnight, especially across the northern half
of the forecast area, on the north side of the low. 1-3 inches
possible overnight into Mon, which could lead to localized flash
flooding. Strong northerly winds will develop rapidly from
north to south Monday morning.

As of 4 AM Sun...Strong low pressure system continues to impact
the region Monday morning before moving offshore in the
afternoon. Another cold front approaches the region by the end
of the work week.

Monday...Strong low pressure will be positioned over the FA by
daybreak with aforementioned heavy rain and severe potential
continuing through the morning hours. Locations north of the low
track and associated warm front will continue receiving the
heaviest rainfall while points south of the front in the warm
sector may continue seeing the potential for severe weather
throughout the morning. Come mid to late morning, the low will
begin to move offshore, bringing along a sweeping cold front
through the region that will shut off our severe weather risks
behind it, though stratiform rain will persist across the CWA
through the early afternoon hours before precip begins to end
late aftn/evening. Gusty Nrly flow behind the front will usher
in strong CAA and pull the OBX into a Wind Advisory.

A non- diurnal temp curve can be expected today with high temps
occuring in the morning before crashing with the onset of
strong CAA behind the front. Crystal Coast areas tucked into the
warm sector in the morning can expect an AM high in the low 60s
while the northern half of the FA will only be in the mid 40s
to low 50s. By the afternoon, inland locations will drop into
the upper 30s to low 40s and continue to crater into the
nighttime hours with lows expected to be in the mid to upper 20s
inland with mid to upper 30s along the coast.

Sightings of some mixed precip cannot be ruled out for the
extreme northern tier counties as temps drop during the
afternoon, but any notable impacts remain unlikely at this time.

Tuesday through Saturday...High pressure builds into the area
Tuesday with a significantly colder airmass building into the
area with temps finally falling below normal. Highs on Tuesday
have dropped a few degrees with mid 40s to around 50 inland and
mid to upper 50s along the coast. The high moves off the Mid-
Atlantic coast as a coastal trough begins to push ashore, which
could bring a few showers across eastern portions of the FA
Wednesday. Temps continue to moderate with highs around the
upper 50s to mid 60s. Another trough drips across the Midwest on
Thu, advancing a cold front closer to the East Coast that will
arrive Thu night into Friday for another chance for a few
showers. High pressure builds back in for Saturday.

.AVIATION /18Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
SHORT TERM /through Monday AM/...
As of 100 PM...VFR conditions across the area this afternoon as
ceilings have lifted and precipitation has become patchy at
best. Winds have also relaxed to southwesterly at 5-10 kts with
the occasional gust to 15 kts. As evening approaches
precipitation coverage will start to increase from the southwest
and rain will become more prevalent overnight as a low pressure
system approaches the area. This will bring visibilities down
to MVFR and ceilings will follow with some IFR cigs possible
during the overnight hours. As we approach daybreak on Monday
Morning, chances for thunder will increase as will gusty winds.
KISO, KOAJ, and KEWN will be the most likely to experience
thunder with possible severe gusts. Pockets of low level wind
shear will also be a possibility mainly with convection.

LONG TERM /Monday through Thursday/...
As of 430 AM Sun...The potential for heavy rain and stronger
storms will continue Monday morning, with higher confidence IFR
to LIFR ceilings as the low passes nearby/overhead. High
pressure builds into the area Monday afternoon/evening with
gusty Nrly winds. High pressure settles overhead Tuesday for a
quiet day before moving offshore Wednesday to be replaced by
another high on Thursday.

SHORT TERM /through tonight/...
As of 7 AM Sun...Latest obs show strong SW winds 20-30 kt,
gusting 30-40 kt across the outer central and southern waters,
with seas 4-8 ft. Strong winds 20-30 kt will continue this
morning, diminishing to 15-25 kt late. Seas will peak at 7-10 ft
today. Gradient will relax a bit this afternoon and evening and
expect a *slight* lull this evening with winds diminishing to
10-15 kt, before ramping up again early Mon morning. Cold front
will push into the waters tonight and early Monday with strong
low pressure moving along it. Expect conditions to deteriorate
rapidly Monday morning. Currently have Gale Warnings and SCAs up
for strong SW flow, and upgraded to Gale Warnings for all
waters for the northerly surge developing behind the front
Monday morning.

LONG TERM /Monday through Thursday/...
As of 440 AM Sun...Nrly winds surge behind the front Monday,
bringing solid Gales to all coastal waters and main tidewaters.
Some storm- force gusts may be possible for the northern and
central waters. Treacherous seas are expected Monday, building
to 10-14 ft across the central and northern waters with 7-9 ft
across the southern waters. High pressure moves overhead
Tuesday, allowing howling winds to rapidly calm to 10 kts and
dangerous seas to drop to 3-5 ft with marine conditions
continuing to improve into Wednesday. Weak coastal disturbance
will bring some rain chances across the waters Wed and inc Srly
flow to 10-15 kts before high pressure returns Thursday.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 4 AM Sun...Very minor water level rises in low lying
areas possible for soundside Outer Banks north of Cape Hatteras
today with strong SW winds. Strong northerly winds will develop
behind a cold front Monday, which will likely lead to a better
chance for minor to locally moderate coastal flooding (1-3 ft
agl) along soundside Outer Banks and downeast Carteret county.
Rough surf expected, with minor ocean overwash possible, from
Duck to Cape Hatteras. Will issue Coastal Flood Advisories for
the Outer Banks and eastern Carteret Monday morning into Tue
morning. High Surf Advisory north of Cape Hatteras Mon into Mon
night.
