A diagnosis of observations and radar data support widespread heavy
rainfall amounts occurred yesterday and overnight from roughly the
KS Turnpike corridor on east/southeast. Localized amounts exceeded 3-
5+ inches. Excessive runoff from this heavy rainfall has caused some
river flooding as well as areal flooding of low-lying areas.
Consequently, various areal flood warnings and river flooding
warnings remain in effect across southeast Kansas.

Additional scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are
expected today, as a potent upper trough moves over the region. Weak
to modest elevated instability along with the strong forcing should
support continued pockets of heavy rainfall. While we are not
expecting the magnitude of rainfall that occurred yesterday and
overnight, additional amounts upwards of one inch or so will only
aggravate ongoing saturated soils and ongoing flooding.
Consequently, expanded the flood watch to include Chase and Butler
counties, and extended in time until 7pm this evening.

Additionally, despite the unlikelihood of any sunshine, thinking
degree of forcing/mid-level cooling with combination of expected
elevated instability and effective shear could support a handful of
strong thunderstorms, generally east of I-135. Dime size hail and 50
mph winds will be the primary threats. All rain/storms should exit
the region to the east this evening and overnight.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

A period of relatively quiet weather is expected across central,
south-central, and southeast Kansas starting Friday, and persisting
through mid-late next week. Per deterministic and ensemble
consensus, the overall large-scale pattern will feature a digging
and persistent anomalous longwave western CONUS trough, and a broad
anomalous central and eastern CONUS ridge.

Increasing atmospheric thickness combined with persistent southerly
flow will support unseasonably warm temperatures starting Saturday,
but especially by Sunday, and extending into mid-late next week.
Highs in the 80s-90s are likely by Sunday, with widespread 90s
likely Monday-Tuesday. Overnight lows will be in the 60s-70s. Normal
highs/lows this time of year are in the 70s/50s.

Despite the hot/moist/unstable conditions, warm temperatures aloft
and overall lack of large-scale forcing for ascent should keep
thunderstorm chances on the low side for most. A few exceptions
include: 1) Storm chances north of I-70 Saturday night, with better
chances across Nebraska...2) Slight chances Tuesday evening
areawide, and again Wednesday afternoon-evening areawide. Storm
chances could increase by late week and next weekend, as the deep
western CONUS trough attempts to eject eastward, although there is
quite a bit of model disagreement surrounding this, so confidence
is low. Severe weather chances look to be highest Saturday night
north of I-70, but especially across Nebraska.

Poor aviation conditions with cigs in IFR/LIFR category will
affect the region for today. In addition, numerous showers and
some embedded thunderstorms will linger over the area through the
afternoon or evening hours. Low cigs look to gradually rise into
the MVFR category tonight.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of Central Kansas,
South Central Kansas and Southeast Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Off-and-on showers and thunderstorms are expected again today
across the region, with locally heavy rainfall expected. This could
aggravate already saturated soils and ongoing flooding concerns,
especially from roughly the Kansas Turnpike on eastward where a
flood watch remains in effect until 7 PM.

Additionally, a few strong storms capable of dime size hail and 50
mph winds are possible from midday through early evening, mainly
along and east of I-135.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

Thunderstorms are possible late Saturday night into early Sunday
morning for areas north of I-70. Some of these storms could reach
severe levels across far northern Kansas and especially Nebraska.

A few thunderstorms are possible by Tuesday and Wednesday. If
storms are able to form, strong to severe storms are possible.
