.SYNOPSIS...
Mix precipitation overnight will change to all rain for most
locations by Sunday morning except east of Lake Ontario. A
strong cold front will cross the region Sunday afternoon with
precipitation changing back to snow by late in the day.
Sunday night, accumulating lake effect snows expected east of
the lakes through Monday night, with the highest impacts
focused primarily downwind of Lake Ontario.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
A mix of -RA and -FZRA across Western NY overnight which changes to
all rain as we head into the early morning hours. There possibly
could still be some isolated pockets of -FZRA across the western S.
Tier before sunrise but that too will change over. Initially a bit
of a different story will unfold further east and northeast (Oswego,
Jefferson, and Lewis county) concerning p-type. BUFKIT sounding
profiles show that a deeper colder air mass will be in place as
precipitation arrives overnight before enough warmer air sneaks in
aloft to chance p-type over. Could see a few inches of snow across
the western Dacks before the mix occurs with some sleet or even a
little --FZRA or plain rain on Sunday. Winter weather Advisories
will continue to remain in effect across the area except for parts
of the Niagara Frontier and Monroe county.
Otherwise, lows will bottom out in the teens east of Lake Ontario
and the 20s elsewhere during the first half of tonight. Temperatures
will then rise to above freezing across the lower terrain for Monroe
County and points west, while temperatures rise into the 20s and low
30s across the interior Southern Tier, Finger Lakes, as well as for
Wayne County and points east.
Strong cold front crosses the region Sunday afternoon, with any mix
or rain changing back over to snow. First across the higher terrain,
then across the lower elevations by late in the day, with some
addtional minor snowfall accums possible across the higher terrain
by late Sunday afternoon. Highs on Sunday will occur by midday with
upper 30s to low 40s south of Lake Ontario, with mid to upper 30s
across the North Country, then falling back through the 30s during
the second half of the day, likely below freezing by sunset across
the higher terrain.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
...HEAVY LAKE EFFECT SNOW EAST OF LAKE ONTARIO...
Our main concern for the short term period swings back to the
potential for heavy lake effect snow, especially east of Lake
Ontario. A deep longwave trough will carve out in eastern North
America Sunday night through Tuesday, with several embedded
shortwaves moving across Ontario and Quebec. A cold front will
depart east of the area Sunday night, allowing the coldest airmass
of the winter season so far to pour into the Great Lakes. The setup
is much more favorable off Lake Ontario, with deeper moisture, more
synoptic scale support, and a better opportunity for upstream lake
connections. Off Lake Erie, lower inversion heights, less synoptic
scale moisture, and less chance of upstream lake connections will
result in a less favorable setup for heavy snow.
Sunday evening there may still be fairly widespread snow showers
across much of the area, supported by DPVA ahead of the approaching
trough, burgeoning lake instability, and boundary layer instability
from cold advection aloft and still mild near surface temperatures
resulting in steep lapse rates. The widespread snow showers will
taper off later Sunday night, giving way to a more pure lake
response.
Off Lake Ontario...
Expect a band of lake effect snow to organize later Sunday evening
on WNW flow across southern Oswego County. This band will intensify
across Oswego County overnight, then move north to the southern Tug
Hill region by early Monday morning. The past few runs of the
Canadian GEM and 3km NAM suggest an intense band will then focus
across northern Oswego and southern Lewis counties for much of the
day Monday. Ideal lake induced instability and favorable cloud
microphysics will support 3"+/hr snowfall rates in the heart of this
band. There may be some thunder/lightning late Sunday night and
Monday as well.
A sharp arctic front will then cross Lake Ontario early Monday
evening, likely capturing the east-west oriented lake effect band
over the lake and pushing it onshore along the entire south shore,
moving south to about the NY Thruway Monday evening before breaking
apart into multiple bands. This will likely produce a quick burst of
heavy snow for areas between the south shore of Lake Ontario and NY
Thruway.
Later Monday night through Tuesday northwest flow will support a
spay of weaker multiple bands south/southeast of Lake Ontario across
much of Western and Central NY. Most of this will be on the light
side, although a Georgian Bay connection may bring enhanced snow to
areas west of Rochester and east of Buffalo for awhile Monday night.
Another more dominant band, supported by modulations in the low
level flow near Irondequoit Bay (convergence driven by concave
shoreline) may support a more concentrated band of snow from the
eastern Rochester suburbs into western Wayne County. Finally,
mesoscale model guidance suggests an enhanced band of convergence
near Mexico Bay in central Oswego County. The multiple bands will
persist through Tuesday morning before slowly diminishing in the
afternoon and evening as high pressure crosses Lake Ontario.
As far as accumulations go, the bullseye of heaviest snow in
northern Oswego County and the southern Tug Hill may see totals of
around 2 feet, with 8-14" common across the rest of Oswego and
southern Lewis counties. This area has been upgraded to a Lake
Effect Snow Warning. Farther north, it will be a close call whether
the band makes it into Jefferson County or not, so left the Watch in
place there given uncertainty. Northeast Wayne and northern Cayuga
counties may see 4-8" total, with most of that falling Sunday night,
and again Monday night in a few different bursts. This area may
eventually need an advisory. Farther west, expect roughly 3-6 inches
from western Wayne county westward across Rochester to
Orleans/Niagara counties, although there may be localized 6+ inch
amounts in areas outlined above that may see enhanced bands. This
area may also need an advisory for Monday night through Tuesday.
Off Lake Erie...
The less favorable synoptic scale support and moisture, shorter
fetch, and less chance for upstream connections will limit the
potential for truly heavy lake effect snow, but amounts will still
add up over several days. Expect a few bands of light to briefly
moderate snow Sunday night through Monday morning with minor
accumulations mainly across the higher terrain of the western
Southern Tier and Boston Hills.
A better window for heavier snow may come late Monday afternoon
through Tuesday morning as flow veers to the northwest. This may
bring a Lake Huron connection more into play and support a period of
heavier snowfall rates. Latest mesoscale model guidance suggests
this Lake Huron band may traverse the western Southern Tier rather
quickly, allowing it to end up in NW PA by early Tuesday morning. If
this band keeps moving, watch/warning criteria snow is less likely
off Lake Erie. Given the uncertainty, for now have totals of 6-10
inches spread out over 2 days for the higher terrain of Chautauqua
and Cattaraugus counties. These amounts over a 2 day timeframe would
fall into advisory range, so will hold off on any headlines for now
given the uncertainty in higher amounts.
Finally, the coldest airmass of the season will support frigid wind
chills Monday night into Tuesday. The coldest air will cross the
North Country with less lake modification, and this area may see
wind chills of colder than -25F at times. Elsewhere, wind chills may
run -10F to -15F.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A ridge of high pressure along the east coast will provide dry but
very cold weather Tuesday night. Good radiational cooling should
allow temperatures to drop WELL below zero across the Eastern Lake
Ontario region with single digits elsewhere. Wednesday should remain
dry, but a southwest flow will provide warmer weather.
A weak cold front will move through Wednesday night with model
consensus dropping 850mb temperatures down to around -10c. This is
marginally cold enough for a lake response, with the best chance for
any lake effect snow east of Lake Ontario where it will be slightly
cooler aloft. At best this should be a minor lake effect event, with
the weak front and associated surface trough only bringing a small
chance of rain or snow showers to the rest of the area with its
passage Wednesday night and Thursday.
A weak ridge is then forecast to move across the region Thursday
night, with most 00Z model guidance keeping a frontal boundary to
the north. This would maintain dry weather through Friday

.AVIATION /07Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
CIGS lowering into the MVFR range with some freezing rain possible
across the western Southern Tier at KJHW and the Finger Lakes
region. Terminals further east and northeast there will be a chance
for some snow or sleet overnight. Winds will also increase and
become gusty.
Sunday, much of the area will see CIGS drop to IFR, with some areas
seeing MVFR at times from the Niagara Frontier over to KROC. There
will also be some pockets of freezing rain and also sleet and snow
continuing east of Lake Ontario Sunday morning. Otherwise, it will be
plain rain for all other terminals.
Outlook...
Sunday night through Tuesday...Local IFR within lake effect snow
east of the Lakes, otherwise MVFR-VFR.
Wednesday and Thursday...Mainly VFR with a chance of snow showers.

Southerly winds will ramp up overnight ahead of a strong cold front,
resulting in higher end Small Craft Advisories for just about all
areas starting by early Sunday morning.
The cold front will then cross the waters Sunday afternoon with
southwesterly winds veering to westerly and increasing further in
the wake of the frontal passage. This will keep Small Craft
headlines in effect through Monday night and Tuesday.
