.SYNOPSIS...
Colder air will pour back into the region this evening behind a
strong cold front, with rain changing back to snow showers. Heavy
lake effect snow will develop east of Lake Ontario later tonight
through Monday, with locally impressive accumulations. Light to
moderate lake effect snow will develop tonight and Monday east of
Lake Erie. An arctic front will cross the region Monday evening
with a burst of heavy snow, especially south of Lake Ontario,
followed by some additional lake effect snow south of the lakes and
wind chills well below zero later Monday night and Tuesday morning.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...

...HEAVY LAKE EFFECT SNOW EAST OF LAKE ONTARIO MONDAY...

A cold front will continue to cross the area through early this
evening. Right entrance region upper level jet dynamics from an
impressive 170+ knot 250MB jet and forcing from an incoming mid
level trough will support a weak frontal wave, with some light
precip lingering behind the cold front. Light rain will change back
to snow in Western NY later this afternoon, first across higher
elevations and last across the lake plains. The higher terrain south
of Buffalo may see a light coating of snow by early evening. Expect
a similar trend east of Lake Ontario, with snow this afternoon
across the higher terrain of the Tug Hill and western Adirondacks,
and rain lower elevations. The Tug Hill may see 2-4 inches of snow
this afternoon and early evening from lake enhanced upslope.

This evening there will likely be scattered to numerous snow showers
across much of the area, forced by DPVA, height falls, and
steepening low level lapse rates as cold air pours back into the
area. This will produce spotty minor accumulations, even outside
lake effect areas.

Tonight our focus turns back to lake effect, as much colder air
pours back into the eastern Great Lakes. This event looks, by far,
most impressive off Lake Ontario with a much weaker response
expected off Lake Erie. It will be quite windy tonight through
Monday evening, with areas of blowing and drifting snow where fresh
snow is on the ground.

Lake Ontario...

Lake induced equilibrium levels will quickly rise to around 8K feet
this evening, then steadily rise to over 10K feet on Monday as the
core of coldest air aloft approaches. Synoptic scale moisture will
steadily deepen, especially Monday afternoon and early evening with
the approach of a strong shortwave. The boundary layer beneath the
inversion will feature a deep favorable thermodynamic environment
for large dendrites, with snow:water ratios of better than 20:1 in
the band. The depth of instability and thermal profiles suggests
some thunder/lighting is possible Monday and early Monday evening.

Expect a few bands of lake effect snow to develop ESE of the lake
this evening across Wayne, Cayuga, and southern Oswego counties.
This initial development will be more lake enhanced snow as trough
induced snow showers interact with the lake. This may produce a few
inches of accumulation this evening ESE of Lake Ontario.

Later tonight expect a band of heavy lake effect snow to consolidate
and intensify across southern Oswego County. This lake effect band
will then drift north late tonight and Monday morning as boundary
layer flow backs a little closer to 270 degrees. We then expect the
lake effect snow to remain in place from northern Oswego to far
southern Lewis counties through most of the day Monday. The forecast
is strongly based on the Canadian GEM band position for Monday, with
the high-res WRF and 3km NAM runs likely showing their systematic
bias of being too far south with dominant single bands. The band on
Monday will be intense, especially in the afternoon when snowfall
rates will likely exceed 3"/hr.

Early Monday evening an arctic front will cross Lake Ontario and
capture the east-west oriented lake band, shoving it south and
onshore along the entire south shore of the lake. This will produce
a quick burst of heavy snow along the entire south shore, including
the Rochester area down to about the NY Thruway. Following this
burst, NW/NNW flow will force multiple bands to develop along the
entire south shore of the lake overnight. The airmass becomes cold
enough to force the dentritic growth zone down to near the ground,
which may cut back some on snow:water ratio. Locally enhanced
low level convergence near Irondequoit Bay and Mexico Bay (driven by
concave lake shorelines) may produce locally better snowfall rates,
including the eastern suburbs of Rochester.

As far as accumulations go, we still expect a bullseye of 2+ feet
focusing on northern Oswego County and the southwest corner of Lewis
County, with 8-14 inches across much of the remainder of Oswego
County. There will be a very sharp northern edge to the band, so
there remains some uncertainty on if it will move into far southern
Jefferson County. We will maintain an advisory there for now and
monitor the movement of the band as the event unfolds. Farther west,
expect 4-7" along the south shore of the lake in Cayuga, Wayne, and
Monroe counties Monday night through Tuesday morning, and 3-5 inches
in Niagara/Orleans counties.

Off Lake Erie...

The setup is much less impressive off Lake Erie, with less synoptic
scale moisture, and lower equilibrium heights. The lake induced
boundary layer will grow to around 6-7K feet tonight, then up to
near 10K feet by Monday evening.

The low inversion heights and poor synoptic scale moisture will keep
the snow light tonight through Monday morning, mainly focusing
across the higher terrain of the Chautauqua Ridge and Boston Hills
with an added boost from upslope flow. Later Monday afternoon
convergence and moisture will increase over Lake Erie with the
approach of an arctic cold front. Monday night, an upstream
connection to Lake Huron will tie into the Lake Erie snow across the
western Southern Tier. This will initially develop over northern
Chautauqua and central Cattaraugus counties, then move southwest
overnight as boundary layer flow veers to the NW/NNW. The potential
for heavy snow will remain tied closely to this upstream lake-to-
lake connection. If this band keeps moving and ends up in NW PA by
early Tuesday morning, it will hold snow totals down, but if it
moves slow enough we may reach low end warning criteria.

As far as accumulations go, expect 7-10" across the Chautauqua Ridge
over a 2 day period, with 4-7" possible for the Boston Hills in
Southern Erie County and also western Cattaraugus County.
Accumulations will initially be minor tonight through much of
Monday, with a few inches every 12 hours. Snowfall rates may then
pick up late Monday and Monday night, pending the intensity of the
Lake Huron connection. Given the uncertainty in warning amounts, we
opted to keep the Watch for Chautauqua County for now.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
NW/NNW flow of very cold air will continue to support a spray of
multiple bands south of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario Tuesday
morning. This will produce some minor additional accumulations.
Boundary layer flow will back Tuesday afternoon following the
passage of a low level ridge. If anything remains of the lake
effect, it will move quickly north in a much weakened state
before ending.

The coldest airmass of the winter will arrive Monday night and
Tuesday morning. Wind Chills may reach -30F for the North
Country, where a Wind Chill Warning has been issued. Farther
west, lake modification will keep the airmass warmer, but wind
chills may still reach -10F to -15F at times.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A ridge of high pressure along the east coast will provide a dry
start for the day Wednesday, with a southwesterly return flow
also bringing warmer weather.

A weak cold front will then move through Wednesday night. Model
guidance is in poor agreement on how cold aloft it will get behind
the front, with model consensus dropping 850mb temperatures down to
around -10c. This is marginally cold enough for a lake response,
with the best chance for any lake effect snow east of Lake Ontario
where it will be slightly cooler aloft. The weak front and
associated surface trough only bringing a small chance of rain or
snow showers to the rest of the area with its passage Wednesday
night and Thursday. Any snow accumulations will be minor.

A weak ridge is then forecast to move across the region Thursday
night and Friday which would result in dry weather. Low pressure
will approach from the midwest Friday night with increasing chances
for some snow from this system through Saturday.

.AVIATION /19Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Widespread MVFR/IFR CIGS will continue this afternoon, with IFR
favored east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario and across higher
terrain. Areas of rain showers across Western NY will change back to
wet snow later this afternoon, first across higher terrain and last
on the lake plains. East of Lake Ontario, any remaining wintry mix
will change back to snow for higher terrain, with rain at lower
elevations. The more persistent areas of rain and snow will produce
areas of IFR VSBY.

Tonight we transition to lake effect snow east and ESE of the lakes,
with a plume of heavy snow developing off Lake Ontario near KFZY
with local VLIFR. This band of heavy lake effect snow will move a
little farther north to northern Oswego and far southern Lewis
counties Monday, with LIFR. The lake effect will be less impressive
off Lake Erie, with occasional light snow east of the lake near KJHW
with areas of MVFR/IFR conditions. Outside of lake effect, most
areas will improve to VFR tonight through Monday.

Outlook...

Monday night...Areas of IFR in lake effect snow, with a few heavy
bursts of snow and VLIFR moving south off Lake Ontario in the
evening.
Tuesday...Local IFR within lake effect snow east of the
Lakes, otherwise MVFR-VFR.
