.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure passing across northern Quebec will continue to
propel a strong cold front eastward across New England tonight.
The colder air will result in a brief period of accumulating
lake effect snow east of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie this evening
through Thursday. High pressure will build in Friday, followed
by another storm system passing to our northwest on Saturday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
A strong cold front continues to exit east, shifting across New
England tonight. Widespread rain is done, but have seen lake
effect snow showers developing off Lake Erie. Thus far, the
intensity has been light and per NY Mesonet cameras, just a
coating of snow accumulation has occurred to this point. Gusty
westerly winds will continue into the evening. Strongest winds
from here on out with gusts of 45 to 50 mph will be mainly near
the Lake Erie shoreline to the south of Buffalo the rest of
tonight and also along the Lake Ontario shoreline tonight into
Thursday morning from near Rochester to the east end of the
lake. Winds will diminish from west to east mid to late Thursday
afternoon as the pressure gradient finally relaxes.

Lake Effect...

Cold air is beginning to pour back into the eastern Great Lakes
behind the cold front, with 850MB temps bottoming out around
-11C or so tonight and Thursday morning. Lake induced
equilibrium levels will briefly rise to 12-14K feet this evening
over Lake Ontario, and around 10K feet over Lake Erie before
steadily lowering Thursday. The best synoptic scale forcing and
moisture will be found over and east of Lake Ontario, which will
benefit from moisture from the upper Great Lakes. A somewhat
less favorable setup over and east of Lake Erie with more
shallow synoptic scale moisture.

Off Lake Ontario...

Expect a band of lake effect rain/snow to develop quickly on the
heels of the departing synoptic scale rain by early evening across
Jefferson and northern Lewis counties. The rain/snow mix will
quickly change to all snow by late evening as colder air
arrives to the sfc. The lake effect band will drift slowly south
across the Tug Hill tonight through Thursday, eventually becoming
centered on the far southern end of the Tug Hill and portions
of Oswego County on Thursday. The band should reach peak
intensity tonight and early Thursday morning across the Central
Tug Hill before weakening late morning into the afternoon.

The greatest snowfall amounts will be focused across the higher
terrain of the Tug Hill where surface temperatures will be colder,
and where upslope flow enhances snowfall rates. Expect totals of 8-
15" in the most persistent bands there. Surrounding lower elevations
will see considerably less, on the order of 4-7", even less than
that right on the lakeshore. A Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in
place for east of Lake Ontario.

Off Lake Erie...

A band of lake effect rain and wet snow will change to all snow
by sunset across higher terrain and by early evening for lower
elevations. The initial band for the first few hours may impact
the Buffalo Southtowns before drifting further south toward Ski
Country from Southern Erie county into northern Chautauqua and
Cattaraugus counties this evening and overnight. The Lake Erie
activity should reach peak intensity this evening through the
early overnight with shortwave moving through and lifting
inversions and increasing moisture into the DGZ before weakening
late tonight and Thursday morning once the shortwave and deeper
moisture exit.

The greatest snowfall off Lake Erie will focus across the higher
terrain of the Boston Hills, western Wyoming County, and Chautauqua
Ridge where 4-7" is expected. Amounts will be lower along the Lake
Erie shore, Buffalo Southtowns, and Allegany County where 1-3" is
expected. The strong winds will support snows extending well inland
from the lake, with 1-2" locally extending into the western Finger
Lakes as well.

Blowing Snow...

The gusty winds will produce areas of blowing and drifting snow
tonight through Thursday in lake effect areas. Visibility will be
significantly impacted at times with gusts over 40 mph.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Surface high pressure slowly passes by to our south Thursday night
and then off the mid-Atlantic coast on Friday. A lowering subsidence
inversion and warming mid-levels will bring an end to what is left
of any lake response Thursday evening. We might be able to squeeze
out a little more off Lake Ontario, an inch or so but not much more.
This would mainly be due to the longer fetch of the lake or the aid
of upstream help to keep the lake effect going off Ontario.

Otherwise...a very brief period of quiet weather will ensue as we
head into Friday. It will be mild too as southerly flow picks up on
the western periphery of the surface high stretched across the
region. Highs on Friday will generally be found in the 40s to near
50F. A bit cooler across the higher terrain east of Lake Ontario
(Tug Hill).

...Strong gusty winds possible Friday night and Saturday...

Still keeping an eye on the Friday night and the Saturday time
period, as a potent shortwave trough tracks across the upper Midwest
into the Great Lakes region. Rapid cyclogenesis and then deepening
of the surface low tied to this system will occur as it tracks
northeast across Lake Superior and then into Canada by Friday
evening. There are 'two' potential areas of concern with this
system...the prefrontal and then post frontal winds. That said...the
prefrontal southerly winds Friday night will 'potentially' support a
downslope wind event off the Chautauqua ridge and also the Black
River valley. Guidance shows +50 knots at 925mb with BUFKIT profiles
advertising a decent inversion at ridge top level. The only caveat
will be 'when' or if we see some precipitation Friday night to
minimize this threat. The next area of concern will be strong gusty
winds along and then just behind the cold front on Saturday. That
said...it should be noted that the track of the surface low as of
now is less than ideal (well northwest of our area) for a
'widespread' wind event. This is well supported by local research.
However...given the strength of the winds at 925mb (50 to 60 knots)
and rapid CAA taking place just behind the front it does warrant
some concern. Although...it does appear that it will be a short-
lived event, if current model trends stay on track. The strongest
post frontal winds will 'likely' be northeast of the lakes on
Saturday. This will especially be the case off Lake Erie where we
could see gusts up to 55 mph or higher. Will continue to mention
this potential in the HWO for now.

Otherwise, mild conditions will exist ahead of the front Saturday
(upper 40s to lower 50s), then temperatures fall behind the front
through the day. We will also see some showers with the front and
then a potential limited lake response late in the day into Saturday
night. This as colder air works in behind the front but synoptic
moisture is lacking and high pressure quickly builds east into the
Lower Lakes.

&&

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
High pressure ridged from the Ohio Valley to New York State will
slide eastward and off the east coast on Sunday...while a weak
surface low slides from central/northern Ontario Province to James
Bay. Lingering spotty lake effect snow showers east/east-southeast
of Lake Ontario at the start of the day should come to an end by
early afternoon with diminishing moisture and backing/shearing of
the low level flow...with an otherwise dry day and highs mainly in
the mid to upper 30s expected.

Sunday night the aforementioned low will lift northeastward across
northern Quebec while attempting to pivot its weak cold frontal
boundary southward across New York State...however this feature will
stall out and eventually disintegrate over our area as it loses the
support of its parent system. With dying forcing and only limited
moisture in place...this feature should generate little if any
precipitation in and of itself...though an associated brief influx
of colder air behind it could still be enough to trigger some
additional spotty lake effect snow showers east of Lake Ontario.
High pressure and drier air will then drift from our area to
northern New England on Monday while providing us with another
mainly dry and quiet day...with modest warm air advection on its
backside also allowing highs to climb back to the upper 30s and
lower 40s.

After that...the various model packages continue to exhibit
considerable run-to-run and model-to-model differences with the
details of the pattern evolution that will take place through the
balance of this period. That being said...in general broad large-
scale troughing should dig from the Plains States across the Great
Lakes...with a corresponding surface low developing over the
nation's midsection and tracking northeastward either across or a
bit to the north of our area. This system should bring rain chances
and milder temperatures back into our area Monday night through
Tuesday...followed by at least somewhat colder temperatures and
lingering rain/snow chances on Wednesday.

Beyond the end of this period...even colder air and at least some
associated lake snow potential may then follow for the latter
portion of next week...however the guidance continues to exhibit
rather large differences in the handling of the main low level
features (and thus the low level wind field) during this time frame.
With this in mind...attempting to resolve any lake effect snow-
related forecast details remains a fruitless enterprise for now.

.AVIATION /22Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of late afternoon...the back edge of the steady rain is in the
process of working across the North Country...with this likely to
exit the region around 22z. Further west across far western New
York...a band of mixed lake effect rain and snow has developed
between KBUF and KJHW off Lake Erie...and the same should happen
east of Lake Ontario by early this evening. Through 24z...conditions
will generally be at or will improve to VFR across the lower
elevations and MVFR across the higher terrain...except within areas
of lake effect rain and snow where a mix of IFR/MVFR will
predominate. Meanwhile...westerly winds gusting to 30-40 knots will
remain commonplace.

Bands of lake effect snow will then produce areas of IFR/LIFR in
snow and blowing snow east of both lakes tonight. These will mainly
impact KJHW and to a lesser extent KART...with the latter likely to
see a few hours of snow this evening before the lake effect band
drifts south of the terminal overnight. Gusty west winds (to 30-40
knots) will also continue through the night areawide...with mainly
VFR conditions found outside of the lake effect activity.

On Thursday...areas of lake effect snow and attendant areas of
IFR/LIFR east of both lakes during the morning will taper off during
the afternoon east of Lake Erie...with the Lake Ontario activity
weakening some but still holding together through the rest of the
day. Of the terminals...KJHW will be the only one affected by these.
Outside of the lake snows...mainly dry/VFR conditions will
predominate...with still-gusty westerly winds (to 30-35 knots) in
the morning slackening during the afternoon.

Thursday Night...leftover lake effect snow showers ending east of
Lake Ontario...otherwise VFR.
Friday...VFR.
Saturday...VFR/MVFR and very windy with rain showers likely.
Sunday and Monday...Mainly VFR.

.MARINE...
A deepening area of low pressure near James Bay will lift across
northern Quebec. The tight pressure gradient from the low will
keep Gale warnings in place for the lakes and Small Craft
Advisories for the rivers.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...
For Cayuga Creek at Lancaster rises have slowed in the last few
hours, but it could still reach flood stage for an hour or two
early this evening. Tonawanda Creek at Attica is also rising
quickly but should crest just below flood stage. Both sites
continue to be monitored closely.

Elsewhere, amounts came in near or slightly less than the 0.75
inch expected. Therefore the Buffalo and Cazenovia Creeks should
crest near or below action stage.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
West winds to 35 knots on Lake Erie have resulted in a seiche
with multiple peaks. Buffalo NOS will remain near or slightly
above 6 ft early this evening but as winds veer more west-
northwest levels should gradually lower through this evening.

West gales of 35-40 knots will continue on Lake Ontario through
Thursday in the wake of a strong cold front. The combination of
onshore winds and wave action will bring a very low chance of
limited lakeshore flooding in low lying areas at the east end of
Lake Ontario. Lake levels are below normal, which will mitigate
flood potential.
