Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A high amplitude pattern remains in place with a long-wave trough
over the North Pacific and Alaska and a strong blocking ridge
over the east Pacific/western U.S. coast. A short-wave trough and
associated surface low are tracking northward across the western
Gulf, bringing another round of steady precipitation to Kodiak
Island, the Gulf coast/Prince William Sound, Bristol Bay, and the
Kuskokwim Valley. More showery precipitation is being observed
over interior Southcentral. Temperatures are quite warm across
the region thanks to warm air advection and chinook winds which
arrived with the system moving through on Friday. As a result,
precipitation is falling mainly in the form of rain. The 12Z
Anchorage sounding shows the freezing level reached 4000 feet,
largely thanks to the locally stronger chinook winds and resultant
compressional warming. Snow levels across Southcentral generally
range from 2000 to 4000 feet. Colder air aloft is wrapping around
the western Gulf low, from the southern Alaska Peninsula to south
of Kodiak Island, then northward across the central Gulf. The
air mass was cold enough to produce some light snow along the
southern Alaska Peninsula this morning.

A deep vertically stacked low over the north-central Pacific
is tracking northward toward the eastern Aleutians and Alaska
Peninsula, with a warm occlusion and associated precipitation
and stronger winds tracking out ahead of the low center. A
series of short-waves are embedded within the strong flow along
the subtropical jet, tracking south of this low, then curving
northward to the east of the low center. These are helping to
amplify the pattern further and reform a jet streak and
atmospheric river pointed toward the Alaska Peninsula and
western Gulf.

Lastly, weather across the southern Bering Sea and Aleutians
is very quiet with just some isolated snow showers.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models are in decent agreement with evolution of large scale
features over the next few days. There are some minor differences
with low track across the Kuskokwim Delta on Monday, which will
affect details of wind and precipitation forecast across the
delta. Despite the synoptic agreement, there are a lot of forecast
challenges related to the details of chinook winds and air
temperatures along with precipitation type. Thus, forecast
confidence is average.

&&

.AVIATION...
PANC...Persistent low level southeasterly flow across the Kenai
and Chugach Mountains will maintain VFR ceilings at the terminal.
There could be some brief periods where the ceiling lowers below
5000 feet as upper waves and light rain move through, but this
would be brief in nature.

Southeasterly winds will come in and out of the terminal based on
pressure gradients in Cook Inlet and the Susitna Valley. With a
surface low over the northwest Gulf this afternoon into evening,
the Turnagain jet should bend southward, leaving the terminal in
light northerly winds. Once this low dissipates, southeasterly
winds will come back into the terminal overnight then persist
until the next storm system moving out of the Pacific approaches
on Sunday. This will provide another break in gusty southeasterlies
until frontal passage Sunday night.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

Warm, moist flow aloft and at the surface will continue in the
short-term. Periods of rain moving south to north across
Southcentral and the Copper River Delta are expected to persist
through the evening. Winds along Turnagain Arm will slightly
diminish overnight into Sunday but will remain gusty as the
overall tighter pressure gradient will remain present over the
area. The next system will enter the Gulf Sunday morning, bringing
more rain to Kodiak Island before tracking northward by Sunday
evening. This looks to be slightly stronger than today's system.
As such, heavier rain is possible along the Gulf coast. Strong
Turnagain Arm winds are also expected late Sunday into early
Monday as the associated low tracks over Bristol Bay and a High
Wind Watch remains in effect. Areas west of the Chugach Mountains
will remain mostly dry with downsloping, although brief periods of
rain cannot be ruled out.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

A weak front will continue to focus areas of snow across mainly
northern parts of Bristol Bay and across the Middle Kuskokwim
Valley through tonight. The few areas hanging on to rain should
see a transition to snow over the next few hours as remaining
pockets of warmer air aloft cool below freezing, with the light
snow moving out from south to north through Sunday morning.

Attention shifts from there to the next stronger low moving across
the Alaska Peninsula into the far eastern Bering by late in the
day on Sunday, with potential for a mix of primarily wet snow and
rain to advance north with the low and its attendant front from
Sunday afternoon through much of the day Monday. A new surge of
warm/moist advection will begin ahead of the low as it works north
towards the western coast of Bristol Bay, setting in motion
another period of warming from the 10s and 20s on Sunday morning
to the 30s to even low 40s by around midday Monday. Strong
southeast winds will also develop along and ahead of the low's
front, with gusts of 50 to 60 mph possible through gaps along the
western Alaska Range between Sunday evening and Monday morning.
These winds will have a key impact on the band precipitation
following the front and low center where they reach down into
valleys, with mixing of warmer air from aloft combined with
downslope warming likely to push temperatures above freezing and
change heavy, wet snow over to rain. Depending on how far west the
warm air reaches as the low moves north, there may be a period of
mixing all the way out over parts of the Y-K Delta, which
currently is most likely late on Sunday night. Areas that manage
to stay all snow will likely see storm total accumulations on the
order of 3 to 8 inches, with the highest amounts expected near the
Kuskokwim Delta Coast and near the Kuskokwim Mountains.

A cold front will move in behind the low as it exits into the
northern interior, sending temperatures crashing back down to more
normal levels in the 0s to 10s from Monday night to Tuesday, with
any precipitation lingering on the back side of the system
changing to all snow by Monday night. The remaining band of light
snow should clear out entirely by Tuesday evening, giving way to a
return of much quieter conditions.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

The biggest driver of active weather will affect mainly eastern
portions of the outlook area during the next two days as a North
Pacific low and attendant front move across the Alaska Peninsula
into Bristol Bay between tonight and Monday. Snow falling ahead of
the front will change to rain over the far eastern Aleutians
early tomorrow morning, then back over to snow by Sunday evening
as colder air wraps into the low from the north. The low's wind
field will send gusty winds up to gale force across the Eastern
Aleutians through Monday, especially where enhanced by gaps and
passes. The rest of the Bering will remain comparatively quiet
and under the influence of modified Arctic air, with mostly light
winds and occasional snow showers drifting across the western
Aleutians and Pribilofs as a series of weak waves move across that
area through Tuesday.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5 - Tuesday through Thursday)...

Gulf of Alaska...Brief gales associated with a trough are
expected south of Kenai Peninsula, bringing seas of 12 to 15 ft
Tue morning through Tue afternoon. Meanwhile, a strong frontal
system from a North Pacific low tracks northward, causing widespread
gales and the potential for storm force gusts into Thu morning.
This latter system will also generate strong southerly swells of
more than 18 ft as both the low and front advances through the
northern Gulf. Essentially, seas will continue to build Thu night
especially along the north Gulf Coast. Forecast confidence is
moderate.

Aleutians / Bering...Two separate North Pacific lows and their
associated fronts will bring widespread gales and the potential
for storm force gusts, and seas of more than 20 ft between Tue and
Thu night. The first low will sweep gales and potentially storm
force gusts across the Western Aleutians/Bering starting Tue
morning. Should this system stay on track, mostly elevated
weather will remain west of Pribilof Islands and Central
Aleutians through Thu morning. The second North Pacific low could
reach the Western Aleutians/southern Bering either Thu evening or
Fri morning, and it will be a repeat of the first low bringing
another round of widespread gales and potentially storm force
gusts mainly across the Western Aleutians/Bering. Forecast
confidence is moderate.

Over the southwestern Gulf, GFS is the only solution indicating
stronger gap winds for the Eastern Aleutians and south of the
Alaska Peninsula in connection with a separate North Pacific low
starting Wed night. For now, will monitor this situation and
provide updates on the next forecast package.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Wednesday through
Saturday)...

Multiple amplified North Pacific lows combined with an Arctic upper
trough will bring active weather across Southcentral and
Southwest the next several days. Over Southcentral, upper ridging
transits from the Gulf through Southcentral between Wed and Thu,
leading to increased low clouds/stratus overnight into early
morning hours, and from cooler to warmer temperatures as the ridge
shifts eastward. Meanwhile, tropical moisture combined with
series of upper-level short-waves from the Gulf could draw
increased precipitation over much of Prince William Sound through
the Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak Island beginning Wed night through
Sat afternoon.

Over Southwest, an Arctic trough extends southward through the
coast on Wed, followed by a separate wave from the Bering leading
to the merging of these two separate features by Thu morning.
This situation could produce increased snowfall as cold air
advection fills Southwest AK into the weekend. Over the Bering, a
robust ridge over the Bering will enhance a broad area of low
clouds/stratus for the Aleutians and Pribilof Islands into Sat
night.
