.SYNOPSIS...
Hurricane Henri will remain offshore of Delaware and New Jersey
through tonight, before making landfall across Long Island, NY
on Sunday, before slowly moving north through Monday. A surface
trough will likely develop across the northeast and Mid Atlantic
states Tuesday and remain near the area through Thursday. A
cold front is forecast to move across the area Friday and stall
to our south as high pressure moves offshore of New England next
weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
No big changes with this update as we await the arrival of heavy
rain across the region. There remains a growing concern for
very heavy rainfall and flash flooding, especially over
portions of southeastern PA and southern NJ.

The focus remains on Henri and its interaction with the mid and
upper level low centered to our southwest. As of mid afternoon,
Hurricane Henri was centered east of North Carolina...several
hundred miles S/SE of New Jersey. An area of showers with
embedded storms continues to sit mainly just offshore the NJ
coast. This was associated with mid level moisture and an
inverted surface trough extending N/NW from Henri. We are also
starting to see some pop-up showers/storms to our west over
central PA associated with the upper trough and diurnal
instability. As we go forward in time heading into tonight,
Henri will be moving northward with the the showers offshore
likely getting wrapped back to the north and west around the
upper low. This should result in this rain spreading NW through
our region this evening and potentially becoming quite heavy in
places by the overnight period continuing through Sunday. Winds
will also start to increase tonight into Sunday near the NJ
coast but the main hazard looks to be the heavy rain and threat
for flooding. The hazard threats are detailed below.

Heavy rain/Flooding: Heaviest rain expected to fall roughly
over the eastern two thirds of the forecast area...basically
from near Cape May north to around Philly and points north and
east. That said, there are growing indications very highest
rainfall amounts could actually be in two bullseyes...one over
portions of north coastal NJ north towards Morris County
associated directly with western side of Henri and another
farther west towards portions of SE PA into central NJ (near or
just east of PHilly towards Bucks Co PA and Mercer/Burlington
Counties in NJ). This latter max would be associated with the
inverted trough as it sets up over the area tonight with the
rain directly from Henri falling Sunday. It still looks like a
fairly widespread 2 to 4 inches of rain for the areas under the
watch with localized amounts of 4 to 6+ inches increasingly
likely as depicted by ARW, NAMNEST, and HRRR. However where
exactly this sets up within the watch area is still uncertain
but this threat could extend as far west as Philadelphia and
Bucks Counties into adjacent NJ counties (Camden and northern
Burlington Counties)

As for the timing of heavy rain, this is a relatively long
duration of precipitation chances, but it appears the period for
the heaviest rain will be late tonight through the day on
Sunday. Further information on the flash flooding and flooding
threat are in the hydrology section below.

Wind: Have not changed much with this afternoon's update. It
still looks like there will be a very sharp drop off away from
Henri, so at this point it looks like Monmouth and Middlesex
could be clipped by tropical storm force winds. Still can't
completely rule out tropical storm force winds edging into Ocean
County if there is a trend westward again, but this is becoming
less likely. The timing of the strongest winds will be during
the day Sunday.

Other hazards: As mentioned below in the marine section, rough
surf and high rip current risk are the primary other impacts for
this event. The tornado threat for this event should be low as
a majority of tornadoes associated with tropical systems are to
the right of the track and we will be staying to the left of the
track of this system (opposite of the conditions on Thursday
with the remnants of Fred).

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
The remnants of Henri could remain nearby to our north through
Monday resulting in continuing showers affecting the area
through this period. However rain rates should become lighter
overnight Sunday night into Monday. Best chances for showers
Monday will be over eastern PA into central and northern NJ.

Henri's remnants should finally pull away Monday night with
showers diminishing.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The initial concern with the long term period will be the
return of hot and humid conditions for the middle of the week
for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and possibly into Friday.
A thermal/lee- side trough is forecast to develop on Tuesday and
remain in place through Thursday. Meanwhile, a mid-level trough
will flatten out Tuesday, with nearly zonal flow across the
area as ridging builds to our south. This will allow thicknesses
to build for the middle to end of the week. Temperatures are
forecast to reach the upper 80s-low 90s for many areas, and with
the humidity, it is possible some areas may approach Heat
Advisory criteria. While organized rainfall and thunderstorms
are not expected, there will be a chance to slight chance of
showers and thunderstorms each day Tuesday through Thursday.

A cold front is forecast to move across the Mid Atlantic region
Friday into Friday night. This is expected to bring a period of
showers and thunderstorms to the area. Friday is expected to be
the last day of the hot and humid conditions for next week, but
may end up being slightly cooler than the middle of the week.

Cooler and less humid conditions are expected on Saturday as
high pressure moves across the New England and the northeast
states then offshore Saturday into Saturday night. There will
remain a chance of showers and thunderstorms however.

.AVIATION /01Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Tonight...Showers and thunderstorm chances will increase
through this evening and overnight due to moisture associated
with Hurricane Henri. The center of the storm will remain well to
our east overnight. However, rainfall associated with the storm
will move across the area. Ceilings will lower to MVFR this
evening and overnight, with IFR ceilings developing for many
areas. Visibility restrictions are also likely due to periods of
moderate to heavy rainfall. Winds will shift to the northeast
this evening, then become northwest overnight with speeds around
5-10 knots, although some areas will become light and variable
at times. Moderate confidence overall.

Sunday...Periods of MVFR or IFR conditions will continue during
the morning hours associated with rain from Hurricane Henri.
Some improvement for southern areas is possible during the
afternoon. Winds shift to west to northwest 5-10 knots, with
stronger winds closer to the New Jersey coast 10-15 knots.
Moderate confidence overall.

Outlook...

Monday-Monday night...Mainly VFR but still a chance for
occasional restrictions due to rain showers especially during
the daytime Monday. West-southwest winds 5 to 10 kt. Moderate
confidence.

Tuesday-Tuesday night...Generally VFR conditions. A chance of
isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms which could
temporarily lead to lower conditions. Localized patchy fog at
night. Winds will vary between southwest to northwest 5-10 knots
during the day, then become light and variable overnight.

Wednesday-Thursday night...Generally VFR conditions. A chance
of isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms which could
temporarily lead to lower conditions. Localized patchy fog at
night. Winds will vary between south to southwest 5-10 knots
during the day, then become light and variable overnight.

.MARINE...
Rest of today and tonight...A Tropical Storm Warning is in
effect for the coastal waters east of Monmouth County. A Small
Craft Advisory remains in effect for the rest of the ocean
waters, with conditions forecast to remain below advisory levels
on the Delaware Bay. Northeasterly winds from 10 to 15 knots
and gusts to 20 knots at times will turn northerly and then
northwesterly with gusts to 35 knots through the overnight as
Hurricane Henri moves northward off the coast. Seas from 3 to 5
feet this evening across the ocean waters will build to 6 to 9
feet across the Ocean and Monmouth coastal waters and 6 to 8
feet across the southern ocean waters.

Sunday...A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for the
coastal waters of Monmouth County and a Small Craft Advisory
remains in effect for the rest of the ocean waters. Conditions
across the Delaware Bay are forecast to remain below advisory
criteria. Westerly winds from 20 to 25 knots with gusts to 35
knots on the Ocean and Monmouth coastal waters and 15 to 20
knots with gusts to 30 knots across the rest of the coastal
waters. Seas will remain elevated from 6 to 9 feet across the
Ocean and Monmouth ocean waters and 4 to 7 feet across the rest
of the ocean waters.

Outlook...

Sunday night...Conditions eventually falling below advisory
criteria as Henri pulls away from the area. Southwest winds from
10 to 15 knots with a few gusts to 20 knots possible. Seas from
3 to 5 feet.

Monday and Monday night...SCA conditions possible with
southwest winds from 10 to 15 knots with seas from 3 to 5 feet.

Tuesday and Tuesday night...Sub-SCA conditions with southwest
winds from 5 to 10 knots with gusts to 15 knots. Seas from 2 to
4 feet.

Wednesday and Wednesday night...Sub-SCA conditions with
southerly winds from 10 to 15 knots. Seas from 2 to 3 feet.

Rip Currents...

Long period southeasterly swells continue to increase on the
coastal waters of New Jersey and Delaware as Henri continues its
approach to southern New England. Thus there is a High Risk of
dangerous, life-threatening rip currents on Sunday. Entering
the surf zone is strongly discouraged this weekend.

Medium period southeasterly swells combined with elevated seas
is expected to result in a High Risk of rip currents is expected
again on Monday for much of the New Jersey beaches with a
moderate risk expected for the Delaware Beaches. Conditions
should generally improve into next week as the storm weakens
and moves into the Gulf of Maine.

.HYDROLOGY...
Heavy rain will be a concern through at least Sunday night due
to the proximity of Henri and a midlevel low. Many risk factors
for heavy rain will exist in our region including precipitable
water values well above normal, slow storm motions, and a deep
warm-cloud layer. Additionally, portions of the region have wet
antecedent conditions from recent heavy rains.

There are generally two phases of the event where the risk of
flooding is elevated. The first is this evening through tomorrow
morning, as several high-resolution simulations have depicted a
quasi-persistent band of precipitation moving into and then
drifting through portions of central/southern New Jersey and
adjacent southeastern Pennsylvania. In a thermodynamic
environment very favorable for efficient rainfall, this is a
worrisome setup, as high rain rates may persist for long periods
at the same locations, leading to excessive rainfall totals
(2-4 inches with locally higher totals) and flash flooding
(potentially significant), especially in urban and other flood-
prone areas. However, model variability is quite high with this
setup, so confidence is low, especially in pinpointing more
exact locations with this elevated flooding threat.

The second phase is centered more in the Sunday afternoon/night
time window, primarily in northern New Jersey and the adjacent
southern Poconos, just after Henri makes landfall and then
meanders in southern New England and vicinity. With a continued
favorable environment for efficient rainfall, widespread
accumulations of 2-4+ inches are possible, leading to some
potential for flash flooding as well as longer-duration
areal/river flooding.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Minor flooding is occurring across much of the Atlantic coastal
areas as of this evening's full moon high tide as Henri
continues to approach the area. We're still not expecting more
than minor flooding. No changes have been made to the Advisory
at this time. Spotty minor flooding is also possible in tidal
portions along the shores of Delaware Bay as well as the tidal
Delaware River, but overall, the threat looks too marginal to
expand the advisory to these areas.

The strongest surge will most closely be associated with the
Sunday morning high tide, but this tide is the lower of the two
daily high tides. As such, not expecting much more than spotty
minor flooding in most areas with this tide, as the surge is
forecast to be fairly low (generally around a foot or so).

Confidence decreases for the Sunday evening/night high tide, as
winds will likely become more offshore for southern portions of
the forecast area (negating the higher of the high tides). For
now, again not expecting much more than spotty minor flooding,
but will continue to analyze the latest model forecasts to
refine forecast tidal levels.

All interests on the Atlantic coast are urged to continue to
monitor the latest forecasts, as enough uncertainty in the track
and intensity of Henri remains to result in substantial
changes.

For the eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay, no significant
flooding is expected this weekend.
