Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED
National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC
444 AM EDT Sun Jun 20 2021
.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will remain offshore this morning. Tropical
Cyclone Claudette is expected to impact the area by this
afternoon through Monday morning. A slow moving cold front is
forecast to cross the area Tuesday night into Wednesday, and
then stall off the NC coast through the end of the work week.
High pressure then builds back into the area next weekend.
&&
.NEAR TERM /Through Today/...
As of 4 AM Sun...Isentropically driven showers are breaking out
across ENC early this morning. This invof a warm front ahead of
Tropical Cyclone Claudette. Moisture well in advance of the
center of Claudette will cont to stream into NC today resulting
in scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms which will
increase in intensity with daytime heating. Sufficient shear,
especially low level shear, will be in place invof the
aforementioned warm front lifting through. Modest sfc based
instability will develop through the day, and any storms will
become sfc based and tap into decent low level helicity in
place. With low lcl vals, a threat for a tornado or two is
possible, along with some damaging wind gusts. PW values
increase to 2" which will support brief local downpours. Highs
will be cooler in the low to mid 80s due to clouds and rain
around the area.
&&
.SHORT TERM /Tonight/...
As of 4 AM Sun...TC Claudette will bring heavy rain to much of
the FA overnight, with heaviest rain falling near the coast.
PW's surging to +2.75" near and to the east of the track of
Claudette will bring heavy rainfall rates of 2+ in/hr after
midnight. For this reason, we have issued a flash flood watch
effective midnight tonight for all of ENC. Winds will back
briefly to the SSE just ahead of the center of the storm,
producing another marginal tornado threat. Strong winds aloft
will bring a threat of strong convective wind gusts to the sfc
as well, so localized damaging winds are possible along with the
flash flood and tornado threat.
&&
.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 220 AM Sun...An active weather pattern continues this
week, starting with Tropical Cyclone Claudette, which will move
off the NC coast Monday morning. Then, a slow moving cold front
will cross the area Tuesday into Wednesday and then stall just
off the NC coast through the end of the work week. High pressure
then re-establishes off the Southeast coast this weekend,
leading do generally drier conditions.
Monday...TC Claudette is expected to be over Eastern NC at the
start of the period, but will be moving eastward and should be
offshore by early afternoon. Widespread areas of heavy rain, and
possible flash flooding will continue through the morning hours,
with PWATs up over 2.5", and possible training of cells through
banding. Embedded low top supercells within the heavy rain
bands, will bring the threat of isolated tornadoes as well. Rain
will end from west to east through the morning hours, and with
subsidence/drier air briefly moving in behind this system,
clouds will clear quickly, and temps will rise rapidly. With low
level thicknesses mostly unchanged, expect highs to reach the
upper 80s to low 90s inland, and low to mid 80s closer to the
coast where clouds will hold on longer into the day.
Tuesday and Wednesday...A slow moving but potent cold front will
move into the area Tuesday afternoon, and slowly sink south
through the area Tuesday night into Wednesday morning before
stalling right off the NC coast near the Gulf Stream. Scattered
to widespread convection is likely along and ahead of the front
as it moves south, with some strong to severe storms possible as
well. An additional 1-2" of rain is anticipated with this
front, which could lead to additional flooding issues depending
on rainfall amounts from TC Claudette.
Ahead of the front on Tuesday, highs will again reach the upper
80s to low 90s inland across the area. Behind the front on
Wednesday the combination of cooler air moving in aloft and
mostly cloudy skies will keep high temps below normal, with
readings only expected in the mid to upper 70s.
Thursday through Saturday...The front will remain stalled off
the NC coast Thursday and into Friday, with showers and
scattered thunderstorms continuing mostly along the coast both
days, however some diurnal convection is possible farther
inland. Cooler temps will remain with highs only in the low 80s
Thursday, and low to mid 80s Friday.
High pressure will ridge back into the area from offshore
Saturday as the front dissipates, leading to a more typical
summer pattern for Eastern NC through the weekend. Scattered
diurnal convection is likely inland, with the coast remaining
mostly dry. Temperatures will climb back to normal with highs
reaching the mid to upper 80s.
&&
.AVIATION /09Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
SHORT TERM /through this evening/...
As of 2 AM Sun...Clouds will lower and increase from the
southwest and lower a bit toward morning in advance of Claudette
which will quickly approach from the west and southwest
today. Ceilings are likely to drop to MVFR for a few hours
early, then increase to slightly above the VFR criteria Sunday
afternoon. Scattered to numerous showers and embedded thunderstorms
can be expected this afternoon, with some IFR conditions
possible with the heavy rain overnight. Winds become gusty from
the SW at 15-25 knots during the afternoon.
LONG TERM /Monday through Thursday/...
As of 225 AM Sun...Periods of sub VFR conditions will continue
Monday morning as TC Claudette moves off the NC coast. Then VFR
conditions are likely through Tuesday afternoon, when a slow
moving cold front moves into the airspace. Expect a period of
possible sub-VFR conditions from late Tuesday through most of
Wednesday, with sub-VFR conditions continuing along the coast
on Thursday as the front stalls offshore.
&&
.MARINE...
SHORT TERM /through Sunday/...
As of 1115 PM Saturday...SW winds 15-25 knots with seas 4-6 feet
on area waters early this morning. S/SW winds 15-25 knots will
continue through Sunday. A brief lull in winds and seas are
expected Sunday late afternoon and evening before conditions
rapidly deteriorate Sunday overnight as Claudette approaches and
moves through.
Seas of mainly 3-5 ft with some 6 ft sets today will inc to 7-9
ft late tonight.
LONG TERM /Monday through Thursday/...
As of 225 AM Sun...Hazardous marine conditions will continue and
peak Monday as TC Claudette moves off the NC coast. Expect
tropical storm force winds to persist through most of the
morning hours, with seas building to 6-10 ft. Later Monday,
winds will subside some, but remain strong out of the SW at
20-30 kts. Winds subside slightly overnight, but then strengthen
back to 25-30 kts Tuesday ahead of a slow moving cold front.
Winds then weaken and turn to the N at 10-20 kts Tuesday night
into Wednesday morning behind the front. NE winds at 10-20 kts
continue through Wednesday night and Thursday.
Seas Monday afternoon will remain nearly steady at 6-10 ft, and
then subside overnight to 4-8 ft from Tuesday morning through
Wednesday morning. Thereafter, seas drop rapidly to 2-4 ft for
the rest of Wednesday and through Thursday.
&&
.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 240 AM Sun...Strong S/SW flow from Tropical Cyclone
Claudette will cause minor coastal flooding concerns with 1-3
ft of storm surge possible Sunday night into Monday mainly for
the soundside areas of the Outer Banks, especially areas north
of Cape Hatteras.
