Area Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...Well yesterday didn't quite go as planned timing wise
however impacts very much fell into line. The severe risk never
completely materialized but there were a few reports. Multiple
features looked quite impressive on radar however these all occurred
early in the day (before 15z) and were all likely elevated so
luckily didn't translate to the ground. Convection definitely
favored the better dynamics early in the day but even the early
convection moved east faster than anticipated and there was far more
convection in the Gulf than anticipated. Due to the convection in
the Gulf it really cutoff quite a bit of the area during the midday
and afternoon hours which led to what likely was a gorgeous
afternoon for much of the area. As for the rainfall we saw
widespread 1-2 inches with 3 separate bands of heavier rain. The
lightest of the 3 occurred from near LaPlace northeast into Pearl
River County where a few places had over 2 inches. The much heavier
bands occurred northeast of the Baton Rouge metro to south of
Lafayette where a large area of greater than 2 inches occurred with
much of southern EBR and portions of Iberville seeing 3 to 4 inches
with isolated spots estimated around 5 inches. The other band was
during the evening hours from near Houma to the MS coast. This was
expected but just occurred about 2 hours later than anticipated.
This band had about 2-3 inches of rain with some spots closing in on
4 inches. Luckily all of this rain fell in almost the perfect
places. The rain near Baton Rouge luckily occurred in 2 separate
bursts, with the first being far more significant from 1030-1230z
and fell mostly south of the metro in more of the marsh/farm land
and the MS river. The second light burst of rain increased the
amounts farther north into the city but luckily was not as heavy as
the earlier rain. The other heavier band across extreme SELA and
coastal MS mostly fell into the marshes and MS Sound. This all
missed much of the rivers and outside of southern spots of BR missed
all of the more heavily populated urban areas that would not have
been able to handle that amount of rain in the short time it
occurred.

So for today, it is a little interesting and not as clear. Our
environment was a little worked over from yesterday and last night
however it was not cleaned out. We are still in southwest flow and
PWs are still around 1.5 and expected to slowly increase later
today. We are currently moving under s/w ridging but there is still
showers developing off and on right now. The ridge axis is expected
to be east of the area by early afternoon and with broad scale lift
slowly increasing as the next disturbance moves through the 4
corners. Combine that with what should be good insolation today and
we will become quite unstable this afternoon. MLCAPE values could be
over 2k J/kg with the forecast highs we have today. The mid level
lapse rate will be much steeper than yesterday and could be around
6.5 C/km or even steeper. Not a lot of deep layer shear or strong
mid level winds so widespread organized convection is not
anticipated but isolated to scattered storms with a few possibly
strong to severe looks likely this afternoon.

Now to Tuesday and Tuesday night which will have the greatest impact
this forecast period. Again this looks like a multiple hazard event
with a risk from both severe weather and heavy rain. First off we
are outlooked by SPC, an ENH Risk for southwest MS and the adjacent
LA parishes, then a SLGT Risk south of the ENH to the I-12 corridor
in SELA and all of coastal MS, followed by a MRG Risk along and
south of I-10 in SELA. as for the heavy rain concern, WPC has a SLGT
Risk for excessive rainfall highlighted for the northern 2/3rds of
the CWA.

As for what will be the cause of this, well first we currently are
in southwest flow aloft which will help with our activity today but
because of that we did not see a cold front or sharp trough move
through we never removed our moisture rich airmass. Due to that it
doesn't have to recover much and by Tuesday afternoon we will have
likely pumped more moisture into the region for about 36 hours. Our
main antagonist will be the strong s/w moving through the southern
and central Plains and across the Lower and Mid MS Valley. Broad
lift along and ahead of the trough should lead to convection over
the southern Plains. Through the morning Tuesday upstream mid level
jet energy will be rounding the base of the trough and as that
occurs the lift across the eastern TX and into the Lower MS Valley
will get a significant kick and h5 winds will increase to 60-70 kts.
This punch will likely spark strong to severe convection during the
day to our west-northwest with an MCS possibly developing Tuesday
afternoon and night. If an MCS fully develops then it will likely
track to the east-southeast across the northern 3rd/half of the CWA
late Tuesday afternoon and evening. The reason for this is it will
want to propagate towards the h85 theta e ridge which will setup wsw
-ene across SELA and southern MS. That is also the area of best LL
convergence. The other key feature will be the prolonged diffluence
aloft through the day and into the evening with upper level
divergence still in place all night and into Wednesday thanks to the
upper jet setting up over the Lower MS Valley and running ene
through the southeastern CONUS and rounding the southern portions of
the Appalachians.

Of the impacts, I am actually more concerned about the heavy rain
potential than the severe threat however that is not to take away
from the severe threat given SPC does have an ENH Risk. Biggest
concern about the rainfall is the thunderstorm efficiency and if you
were impressed with today's efficiency then Tuesday and Tuesday
night could be even greater. Models are all indicating extreme PW
values for early May with all OP runs indicating a record PW May 5
00z. There is expected to be far more instability to work with and
stronger more widespread thunderstorms are just more efficient
already but given the PW values of at or above 1.9" (multiple models
suggesting greater than 2" which is ridiculous for May until May
25th) it will make the rain even heavier. That along with the
persistent LL moisture convergence over the area through the day and
night, the upper level diffluence early and then divergence
overnight, a weak cold front basically stalling across the CWA
overnight as it has no mid and upper level support to drive it
south, and a K index that is expected to be at or even above 40 and
the ingredients are there for extremely heavy rain. The big question
is the models and ensemble means have such a large spread in the
amount of QPF and not quite sure why. One question is does the
heavier rain and MCS stay a touch farther north or does it have a
strong cold pool and keep surging south. Is there some mid level dry
air intruding in(nothing appears to be indicating that and if it did
happen the severe risk would be better). We look to be in a
favorable spot with respect to the upper level jets, we will see LL
convergence (although it may not be very strong it is still
convergence), strong deep layer shear (0-6km bulk shear around 40-
60kts) will lead to organized storms, so really confused why the QPF
is so low on some of the models and ensembles.

Rain and heavy at times could continue well into Wednesday as the
weak cold front will likely stall over the region with the mid level
flow parallel to the boundary leading to storms likely training over
spots. If this occurs where that is could lead to significant
impacts. The one likely scenario that could occur that may help keep
the rain from being to heavy would be the strength of the MCS. That
would mean a greater risk of strong to damaging winds however this
would likely lead to a strong cold pool which would help to speed up
the forward propagation and continue to push the convection south
including the cold front and possibly into the Gulf. This really
would be the best scenario for our area and a very plausible outcome
however depending on a strong cold pool is not something that we can
count on all the time.

The severe aspect is somewhat conditional and over our area will
hinge on whether there is any lead impulse that comes out of the
southwest leading to convection firing that afternoon. If we are
waiting for the bulk of the energy to come out of the southwest and
into the Lower MS Valley and Ozarks then we may only be dealing with
the MCS late Tuesday afternoon and night. There is a good chance
that we will likely be the launching point as numerous times in the
past for thunderstorms to develop but really take off as they move
into southern/central MS and AL. Mentioned in the heavy rain threat
instability will not be a problem. Fcst soundings indicate that even
MLCAPE could be abv 2000 j/kg with showalters index of -5 and mi d
level lapse rates before convection possibly steeper than 7 C/km.
Once again LL shear is on the low end and given that we are now in
April that is not overly surprising however, deep layer shear will
be more than adequate for organized convection. If storms can fire
out ahead of the main area of convection then large hail and maybe
even a tornado or two will be possible but if we end up just dealing
with the possible MCS the primary risk will be straightline winds
with that.

The forecast for Wednesday is HIGHLY dependent on what happens
Tuesday night. If the MCS/convection has a strong enough cold pool
and can drive the front just into the Gulf then slightly less
coverage and lighter rain can be expected. If the front can't get
into the Gulf and stalls over SELA and/or coastal/southern MS then
look for higher rain chances and much heavier rain possibly
exacerbating any issues that may have occur the day and night
before. If the front stalls over the region the mid level flow will
parallel the front leading to storms likely training over areas.
There will still be copious amounts of moisture to work with as PWs
could still be in the 1.8-2" range. Rain shouldn't be widespread so
we will likely have some sun and warm up thus becoming unstable and
such leading to thunderstorms and not just showers. In addition
there is a chance we could feel some RRQ enhancement leading to
divergence aloft. /CAB/

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Sunday) A vigorous northern stream
trough axis and trailing cold front is expected to sweep through the
area on Thursday.  There will likely be some lingering convection
along the immediate coast of Southeast Louisiana and over the
offshore waters in the morning hours that is associated with the
first frontal boundary expected to stall over the area Tuesday night
into Wednesday. By Thursday afternoon, the northern stream trough
axis should be east of the area, and strong negative vorticity and
dry air advection will take hold of the area resulting in clearing
skies and dropping humidity values.

A shortwave upper level ridge is expected to build over the area on
Friday, and this will keep a very dry and very stable airmass in
place across the Gulf South. The dry airmass should also support a
larger than normal diurnal range on Friday with overnight lows
dipping into the 50s and lower 60s both Thursday and Friday nights
and daytime highs warming into the lower to middle 80s. Overall, a
very benign stretch of weather is expected for the latter part of
the workweek.

The ridge should weaken on Saturday, and a zonal flow regime will
take hold of the region. In the low to mid-levels a ridge axis will
become centered over the eastern Gulf allowing for increasing
onshore flow. Dewpoints will begin to rise on Saturday and will
eventually climb back into the 60s and lower 70s by Sunday.  As low
level moisture increases, overall atmospheric instability will also
grow. The one limiting factor over the weekend will be a persistent
mid-level capping inversion that could limit convective potential on
Sunday. However, there are indications that a weak vorticity max
could slide through the area, and there may be just enough mid-level
moisture advection and cooling to weaken the cap ever so slightly.
If this occurs, some widely scattered airmass convection could
develop Sunday afternoon as temperatures climb into the mid 80s.
Have included a low chance POP in the forecast as a result. /PG/

.AVIATION...12z TAF Discussion...Overall most terminals will
continue to deal with low cigs through mid morning. All terminals
should be back into MVFR around 15z with gradual improvement through
the late morning and then VFR conditions for most if not all of the
terminals by 18/19z. We could see widely scattered showers through
the day but deeper convection will likely hold off till mid and
l,ate afternoon after we have heated up significantly. With that a
few terminals could see some impacts from scattered TSRA this
afternoon and early this evening. convection should begin to die
down a few hours after 00z. /CAB/

.MARINE...No big changes with higher pressure still in place over
the western and central Atlantic and extending across the eastern
Gulf. this with low pressure over the souther Plains will continue
to lead to moderate to strong onshore flow through Tuesday. SCY was
extended through 00z Tuesday. Even if winds relax a little the
persistent southerly winds will likely still lead to hazardous seas
in the open waters. A cold front will approach the waters late
Tuesday and could stall over the northern Gulf Wednesday or
just inland before finally pushing farther south on Thursday. /CAB/
