Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...A gale force front is currently moving through the
region which has brought an end to our near week long string of
dry weather. Strongest winds and greatest amounts of precip have
generally been along the northern Gulf coast. Areas in and around
Yakutat have generally reported amounts around 1 to 1.5 inches.
The far southern reaches of the panhandle such as Ketchikan and
Klawock have yet to see any rain, but should get some by sunset at
the latest. Winds and precipitation intensity have been dropping
over the course of the day, and will continue to do so through the
forecast period, as the low pressure system in the Gulf has been
filling. Precip turns over to more showery in nature as flow
behind the front becomes disorganized and onshore flow becomes the
primary driver of precip. PoP chances remain elevated through
Saturday as a short wave will pass which could bring better
organization to the showers. Not anticipating any huge amounts of
precip, but can not rule out some locations seeing a quick
downpour or two and accumulating an additional half to one inch
through the day into the night. Temperatures through the weekend
will feel a bit on the cool side compared to normal with some
locations struggling to break 50 on Saturday and low to mid 50s
being the norm for Sunday. Persistent cloud cover though should
limit the diurnal swing for the night time lows. Sorry we couldn't
get better conditions for the weekend, but this is southeast
Alaska.

.LONG TERM.../Sunday to Friday as of 10 pm Thursday/ The long
term forecast begins with rain lingering across much of the
panhandle. Expect precipitation to continue, especially through
the central panhandle through the day before slowly winding down
as the weekend draws to a close. Uncertainty continues to be a
major factor heading into Monday, with the question of where the
parent low actually goes still contested amongst the ensembles
and operational runs. Am leaning more towards the low moving into
the panhandle and then departing sooner rather than later-the
outcome still broadly favored by the Canadian and the Euro
Ensemble. This would introduce better chances for drier weather
across at least the S panhandle on Monday, though a wave may try
to push out of northern BC and into the N panhandle around this
timeframe. Do not expect much in the way of total rain
accumulations from any possible wave which does develop. Beyond
this timeframe, there are indications that a ridge is likely to
build over the eastern gulf through Tuesday, which would introduce
NW flow into the area and drier conditions across SE Alaska. As
a result of the anticipated ridge, chances of precipitation on
Wednesday could continue to remain low as a system which ensembles
had previously been hinting at impacting the panhandle instead
move around the ridge. Temperatures could be warmer Tuesday and
Wednesday, especially if there are significant breaks in the
clouds, but it still remains difficult to tell with any
significant degree of certainty. Forecaster confidence is average
through Tuesday and below average Wednesday onwards.
