.SHORT TERM.../Through Sat night/ A gale force weather front is
moving in from the Gulf today. Moderate rain has already been
observed at Yakutat and Radar and satellite rain rates show the
precip is just offshore as of 5 am. It should spread to the rest
of the panhandle through the day (Hyder may have to wait until
tonight to see any rain). Meanwhile, wind has not been much of a
factor so far unless you are out in the Gulf. Gale force winds
have been observed near Cape Suckling overnight and winds up to 30
kt have been seen in the rest of the gulf.
Timing of precip onset ranges from this morning for areas near and
West of Kake, Klawock, and Hydaburg; to this evening for Hyder.
The steady rain will not last as a transition to convective
showers will occur for most areas Fri night. Rainfall is still
expected to range around 0.5 to 1.5 inches through Fri night with
the highest totals expected in the northern panhandle and NE gulf
coast. Some periods of moderate rain are likely with this front as
it is dragging some moisture from lower latitudes into the area
though it is minor in magnitude.
Winds are not expected to be that significant as the front will be
weakening as it moves inland today. Gales still expected in the
northern gulf this morning with 25 to 30 kt winds in the rest of
the near shore waters of the gulf. Inner channels winds will be
increasing today, but with the exception of areas near the outer
coast, should not amount to more then 20 kt this afternoon and
evening.
Into Sat, focus then shifts to the ruminate low that will drift
from the SW Gulf to W of Baranof Island by late Sat night. The
persistent onshore flow from the S or SW from this low will keep
showers going across most of the panhandle into Sun night with
some slight organization possible from a short wave upper trough
moving through just ahead of the low Sat afternoon. Some of these
showers could end up being rather heavy Sat night as the upper low
that is above the surface low is rather cold with 850 mb temps
down to -3C. While convective indices (and still cool gulf
waters) don't indicate a potential for some thunderstorms at this
time, it will still be watched.
.LONG TERM.../Sunday to Friday as of 10 pm Thursday/ The long
term forecast begins with rain lingering across much of the
panhandle. Expect precipitation to continue, especially through
the central panhandle through the day before slowly winding down
as the weekend draws to a close. Uncertainty continues to be a
major factor heading into Monday, with the question of where the
parent low actually goes still contested amongst the ensembles
and operational runs. Am leaning more towards the low moving into
the panhandle and then departing sooner rather than later-the
outcome still broadly favored by the Canadian and the Euro
Ensemble. This would introduce better chances for drier weather
across at least the S panhandle on Monday, though a wave may try
to push out of northern BC and into the N panhandle around this
timeframe. Do not expect much in the way of total rain
accumulations from any possible wave which does develop. Beyond
this timeframe, there are indications that a ridge is likely to
build over the eastern gulf through Tuesday, which would introduce
NW flow into the area and drier conditions across SE Alaska. As
a result of the anticipated ridge, chances of precipitation on
Wednesday could continue to remain low as a system which ensembles
had previously been hinting at impacting the panhandle instead
move around the ridge. Temperatures could be warmer Tuesday and
Wednesday, especially if there are significant breaks in the
clouds, but it still remains difficult to tell with any
significant degree of certainty. Forecaster confidence is average
through Tuesday and below average Wednesday onwards.
