Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...Weak ridging currently exists over the region, but
is slowly breaking down in front of a low that is moving in from
the west. Currently, dry but cloudy conditions exist over much of
the panhandle. Our dry conditions will come to an end Thursday
night into Friday as a gale force front moves into the region.
Gales should be limited to the northern coast and open waters and
should diminish through Friday. Greatest precipitation totals will
be along the northern coast where 1 to 1.5 inches appear likely.
Amounts around one inch will be typically through the Icy Strait
corridor into Juneau with lesser amounts anticipated to the north
and south. After the main front passes, the associated low will
meander in the Gulf through the duration of the forecast period,
maintaining onshore flow and chances for showers. Cloudy
conditions during the forecast period will serve to moderate
temperatures, limiting just how warm we will get during the day,
but keeping night time minimums high enough that there shouldn't
be a need for anymore frost advisories in the near future.

.LONG TERM.../Saturday to Thursday as of 10 pm Wednesday/ The
long term forecast begins with a second wave wrapping into the
panhandle behind the previous front. The northern and central
panhandle will largely be the favored recipients of this second
wave, though do not expect as much in the way of QPF as the main
front brought in the day before. Areas further south will see
lower chances of rain as the bulk of the energy remains focused
on the north. Uncertainty continues to be a major factor from
Sunday onward, with the question of where the parent low actually
goes remaining hotly contested amongst the ensembles and
operational runs. Am leaning more towards the low moving into the
panhandle and then departing sooner rather than later-the outcome
broadly favored by the Canadian and the Euro Ensemble. This would
introduce better chances for drier weather across at least the S
panhandle on Monday, with a more NW flow pattern encouraging drier
conditions to longer through Tuesday as well. This is a low
confidence forecast however, and the possibility remains that rain
could still be a factor through this time, especially with the
GFS still hinting at easterly wave potential. Beyond this
timeframe, the ensembles have begun hinting at the idea that
another system could impact the area during mid- late next week.
