Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.UPDATE...Strong lift across the northern Panhandle and stubborn
cold air drainage down the Chilkat Valley has caused us to rethink
a changeover to rain along the Haines Highway tonight. Thus, we
have increased snowfall accumulations in the Chilkat Valley to as
much as 8 inches through 6 AM Wednesday morning. Haines itself
presents a trickier problem. As always it will be dependent on the
warmer southerly winds limiting snowfall accumulations. But latest
obs do show a southeast turn and a temperature warming up to 34
degrees, so we feel good about limiting their snowfall
accumulations to around 3 inches. But again greater accumulations
up to 8 inches are now expected, mainly this evening along the
Haines Highway to the border.

Elsewhere, we extended strong winds with gusts to 50 mph into
mid-evening for Gustavus and Juneau. Yakutat should experience
these strong winds later this evening.

.SHORT TERM...The deep low responsible for the latest round of
weather continues to move North. Currently located off the coast
of Sitka, buoy 46084 has reported a Sea Level Pressure below 962
mb. As the low moves north through the remainder of the day, it
will continue to bring wind, rain, and snow to the panhandle. Many
areas, particularly in the northern panhandle, will experience
strong winds through the afternoon and evening. Snow will be
largely centered around the northern part of the area. Haines and
the Haines Highway in particular continue to pose a major
forecasting challenge. Winds are anticipated to shift to the SE in
the evening hours in Haines, bringing with them warmer
temperatures. If these temperatures make it up the Haines Highway,
accumulating snow will be largely cut off. If the Highway
continues to remain cold, it could see higher snow totals than
currently forecast. For now, have chosen to maintain the existing
Winter Weather Advisory for Haines and the Highway.

The Central Panhandle looks less likely to receive substantial
snowfall. SE winds in Juneau in particular should be enough to
keep precipitation largely rain, although some occasional mixing
cannot be entirely ruled out especially late at night and on
Wednesday morning. The active weather continues unabated and
another band of precipitation moves in on Wednesday. It is
followed by still another system moving in on Thursday. This
system will bringing with it gale force and small craft winds to
the outer coastal waters and inner channels and rain and snow for
the area. Forecaster confidence is below average, with
temperatures potentially staying lower than anticipated in some
areas depending on how strong and long-lasting the SE flow.

.LONG TERM...A consensus trough of low pressure over the Gulf
of Alaska such as in the pattern we have endured favors wet and
breezy weather for Southeast, with precipitation falling as rain
near sea level and snow up Upper Lynn Canal--at least along the
highways and Hyder. While rain is a near certainty at times, snow
is not out of the question as between systems, some colder air
could offer the chance for accumulating snow to fall at times
overnight in Juneau and much of the rest of the northern
Panhandle. But by no means do not expect a winter wonderland.
Aside from Upper Lynn Canal, snowfall will generally be a
temporary feature across Southeast landscapes.

Ensembles and operational models first indicate a low pulling NW
from the North Pacific into the western gulf on Thursday. A gale
force front extended into the eastern gulf should produce
widespread precipitation across the region Thursday. Snow could
present issues along the highways.

Confidence begins to fall on Friday as a new system begins to
emerge from the south. The ECMWF brings the system sufficiently
farther to the west faster and maybe suggests a bit of a break in
the precipitation for Friday. While the GFS is much slower with
the phasing, and keeps things wet.

This weekend another storm--possible storm force--pulls north into
the gulf with wind and rain for the southern Panhandle and the
coast, and snow and wind for portions of the north as well as
Hyder. Currently impacts from this storm look most likely late
Saturday into Sunday.

All in all, the uncertainty in this pattern exists in timing and
track of these systems, rather than whether these strong systems
exist or whether they will affect Southeast.
